Brumbies move away from traditional jersey

Canberra - Australian Super Rugby franchise, the Brumbies, have revealed their 2016 Super Rugby jersey.

The home strip is a brand new design and unlike anything the Brumbies have worn over the past 20 seasons.

Predominantly blue in colour, the jersey has gold strips down the side of the torso and under the arms.

Brumbies Chief Executive, Michael Jones, says the new playing strip represents a new era for the club.

“It’s very different,” Jones told the Brumbies’ official website.

“We are a club with a more than 20-year history and over those two decades our jersey hasn’t changed all that much - this year it will,” Jones continued.

“We have worked very closely with our official apparel partner, Classic, and sought the input of the playing group, to come up with a unique design that we are excited to reveal to Brumbies fans.

“We understand while this design is a change, there is plenty of history in the Brumbies jersey and we pay respect to that history with this design.”

Inside the collar is a printed message that reads: “A proud history. A passion for excellence.”

The new jersey contains a three-stripe pattern that runs diagonally across the front and back - a nod to the previous design of golden stripes across the middle.

The Brumbies players have been given their first look at the new playing strip and are thrilled with the design.

“I think it’s a good representation of where we are at as a club,” said lock Blake Enever after trying the jersey on for the first time.

“It’s gone away from the more traditional look of the three stripes and the white,” centre Nigel Ah Wong said.

“It fits very well, and will suit the big boys, who like to show their muscles a bit.

“Looking forward to wearing it next season.”

No 8 Ita Vaea said he is looking forward to running onto GIO Stadium for the season’s opening match on February 26 wearing the new-look uniform.

“It’s good, something different compared to the last couple of years,” Vaea said.

“Not really what I expected, I’m very surprised but I really like it.”

The players say the new jersey is lighter than previous versions.

“It feels like a very light t-shirt,” Ah Wong said.

The players will wear the new jersey in their first trial match of 2016 against the Waratahs in Wagga Wagga on February 6.
