All Blacks skipper welcomes first son

Cape Town - Kieran Read's first son is destined to become a Black Cap, according to his father.

The All Blacks skipper announced that his wife, Bridget, had given birth to their third child and first son.

Read, 31, said he was showing Reuben James Read, who was born last Thursday, "the art of test cricket early", as he looked towards Christchurch's Hagley Oval from a hospital room.

"So happy to introduce the latest addition to the Read family. Reuben James Read, born 19/1/17. Great view from the hospital room over Hagley Oval, teaching the wee man the art of Test cricket early. #futureblackcap," Read posted on Facebook.

Read is a talented cricketer himself, and represented Northern District and New Zealand teams in his youth.

The Crusaders No 8 chose rugby, though, and has won 97 All Black Test caps to date since his debut in 2008.

The Read family is now at five, with Reuben joining sisters Elle and Eden.
