Whiteley: Boks have what it takes

Johannesburg - Loose forward Warren Whiteley believes the Springboks have what it takes to win the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Whiteley’s impressive form for the Lions has seen him rewarded with call-ups to the Springbok squad over the past two seasons. His high work-rate around the field saw him establish himself as one of the top loose forwards in the country.

However, Whiteley was one of the unlucky players to miss out on a spot in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup as he found himself in a competitive pool of flanks and No 8s, including Willem Alberts and Duane Vermeulen.

Despite this disappointment, the 27-year-old was still excited to see what the Springboks could achieve in England.

“It’s always an honour being called up to the Springbok squad,” Whiteley told MyPlayers.co.za.”As a player and a person, I’ve grown immensely from my time in the national squad.

“I’ve made new friendships. It’s great how players from different unions join one squad and become one team. As unit, we want to make the country proud and that’s the special bond that unifies players from different backgrounds.

“I’ve gained so much from working with so many talented individuals... not only the players, but the coaches and management too.

“The Springboks offer a fantastic learning environment. Yes, there’s personal disappointment in not making the Rugby World Cup squad, but I’m still backing the boys 100%. The squad has worked so hard over the past few months, and I know the team will reap those rewards in England. They have what it takes to lift that trophy!”

Whiteley urged fans to keep the “gees” going throughout the tournament as the Springboks embark on their journey this weekend.

“It’s great to see all the Springbok journeys worn in public every Friday. The support means a lot to the players. I felt motivated whenever I experienced that support from the fans,” said Whiteley.

“I’m backing our boys 100% and I believe they will make South Africa proud. I hope our fans across the country will show their support and back our team.”
