Why Rory, Luke weren't picked

2009-05-19 22:38

Cape Town - Stormers loose forward Luke Watson and Sharks scrumhalf Rory Kockott have not been selected for the Springbok XV because they are simply not the best players in their positions, says coach Peter de Villiers.

The Springbok XV will lock horns next Friday in a practice match against a Namibian XV in Windhoek.

Watson, whose good form has been praised by various gurus of the game this week, is one of the three best No 8's in the country, according to De Villiers but not as good as the Bulls’ Pierre Spies and Sharks’ Ryan Kankowski.

“I don’t want to play games; I want them to start believing in my plan. Pierre and Ryan are my first and second choices in their positions and Luke is just below them,” said De Villiers.

No Bulls have been selected because they have reached the knockout stages of the Super 14.

Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak has been chosen above Kockott whose fiery temper sometimes overshadows his brilliant performances.

“I have looked at both, but Jano has shown some promise from a young age,” says De Villiers.

Springbok captain, John Smit, is the only tighthead prop in the squad, which could be a sign that he is the favourite for the position for the Test series against the British and Irish Lions.

“It is a practice match and not the real thing. Things can still change before the series. But we have shown trust in John in another position (other than hooker) by selecting him at prop,” said De Villiers.

De Villiers has selected six players - Jean Deysel, Vermaak, Steven Sykes (lock), Wian du Preez (prop), Earl Rose (flyhalf) and Morgan Newman (centre) - with no Test experience.

The match in Windhoek doesn’t have Test status, but the selection of players gives a bit away regarding which players are in De Villiers's bigger plan.

Bulls players aside, the Boks will be missing injured stars Frans Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Deon Carstens and Jaque Fourie (who is getting married).

Mr de Villiers I applaud you for not considering Luke Watson I would rather we lose with a team of men who are proud to be picked to represent their country. Why is it alleged that Puke is playing well is it perhaps that the opposing teams cant stand the smell of his puke and dont want to get too close to him. If you havent learned anything else from Jake White at least take note that he did not rate Puke as a player and we won the world cup!!!

  • Hentie - 2009-05-20 00:31

Please Div, come clean. Luke was not picked because of what he said and the attitude towards him by his potential team mates. Anybody who analyses Pierre Spies' play closely will realise how useless he actually is as a loose forward. He misses lots of tackles and does no work in the tight loose to speak of. Every now and then he runs with the ball for a few metres and then everbody thinks that he is an absolute superstar. Why don't they move him to the wing where he will probably be of more worth.

  • Denése - SHARKS SUPPORTER - 2009-05-20 00:34

CONGRATS TO JAQUE FOURIE - SUCH A GREAT GUY - ALL THE BEST FOR A LONG HAPPY MARRIAGE - GOD BLESS YOU BOTH. TO FRANS STEYN - THE SHARKS AND SA WILL MISS YOU TOO MUCH IF YOU GO TO FRANCE. WISH YOU'D STAY. WE'LL NEED YOU WHEN TERBLANCHE RETIRES - BUT THAT GIVES YOU A COUPLE OF YEARS OVERSEAS. OR COME BACK AFTER 1 YEAR AND PLAY #12 FOR NEXT SUPER 14. TO RUAN AND DEON - SPEEDY RECOVERY - WE NEED YOU BOTH. YOU ARE TWO BRILLIANT PLAYERS. TO THE SQUAD CHOSEN ABOVE - DO SA PROUD - A GOOD SELECTION. DON'T KNOW WHY PUKE IS ALWAYS SINGLED OUT. YOU'D SWEAR HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN EVERY POSITION THE WAY HE IS INVOLVED IN SO MANY DISCUSSIONS. PERHAPS HE HAS A BIG MOUTH.

Morgan Newman and Earl Rose??????????????? WHY???????

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 04:06

Great news........At least there will be no puking this time.............

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 06:26

So by PDV's thinking, Earl Rose is one of the best two flyhalf's in SA. What message does that send to M.Steyn, Pretorius, Grant etc ? That's why Grant will be off overseas for the big bucks.

  • Walt - 2009-05-20 06:54

I agree with de Villers' selection of the two number 8s. Watson does not match these two. One can also not dispute the selection of Jano Vermaak, but Kockett deserves selection ahead of January in this year's super 14 showing, but let's accept January's experience and not forget what he IS capable of. There's still a stoney silence regarding the non-selection of, undoubtedly, the best full back for the past two years, Stefan Terblanche. We want to beat the Lions convincingly; not grind away the three tests by narrow margins!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 07:08

WTF???!!!!! Earl Rose?? Morgan Newman?? Jano Vermaak?? What is Peter de Villiers smoking?

  • Hannetjie - 2009-05-20 07:26

I agree that Rory and Luke are playing good rugby but I think Peter de Villiers is looking at the team in total also and the chosen players fit the team game much better!!!

  • mark - 2009-05-20 07:28

    Earl Rose?? Surely not.

  • jacojvr - 2009-05-20 07:37

i think probably only stefan terblanche is unlucky - kockott's attitude has counted against him and did watch to many old joost videos standing behind the loose scrumm making signals and not clearing the ball

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 07:46

Great ! If Watson gets selected I dont support the boks !!

  • Vic - 2009-05-20 07:55

I can understand Luke not being there but leaving Rory out does not make sense. Dont get me wrong, Vermmaak is young and talented but I do not think he is in the same class as Kockott.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 07:56

Luke must go join KP overseas !!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 07:58

Agree with Kockett and Watson expalantion - just can't wrap my head aound Earl "fumble"Rose

  • jean - 2009-05-20 08:03

I agree with the watson issue - although he did have a great super 14, he is not worthy to wear the springbok jersey, but I really beleive that talented players are being left behinde, and this may very well cost us the test.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:04

What about Stefan??? Can Div please explain that!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:05

What about Stefan??? Can Div please explain that!

  • WHATEVER! - 2009-05-20 08:06

Lions scrumhalf, Jano Vermaak, has been chosen above Kockott whose fiery temper sometimes overshadows his brilliant performances. “I have looked at both, but Jano have showed some promise from a young age,” says De Villiers. NO PROBLEM - MAYBE THE CHOICE OF VERMAAK AHEAD OF KOCKOTT IS JUSTIFIED, SPECIALLY SINCE HE LOOKED AT "BOTH" OF THEM - BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LOOK AT "BOTH" JANUARIE AND VERMAAK...OR "BOTH" JANUARIE AND KOCKOTT OR "BOTH" JANUARIE AND THE TEAM'S CLEANING LADY...THEN YOU WILL NOTICE THAT JANUARIE IS DIV'S PROTECTED LITTLE (SORRY, BIG) BOY - STOP FEEDING US RUBISH PETER, WE'RE NOT STUPID!

  • Chris - 2009-05-20 08:08

Earl Rose is a shocker, the same can be said of Ricky January who had an appalling season and couldn't even make the Stormers' starting lineup. Who is Morgan Newman?

  • Cliff Bradley - 2009-05-20 08:08

He Is Smoking A Bit Of Courage Which Is What You Anonymous Users Should Try And Use Your Names - Oh I know ,now you can change your views as the time goes on without anyone knowing you are a "DRAADSITTER"

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:09

Earl Rose,PDV must be out of his mind,he does not play constant rugby, his game is on/off,rather pick Stefan Terblance then.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:11

Everybody is missing Ludik. Can PdV honestly say he isn't one of the best three fullbacks in this country?

  • BEN - 2009-05-20 08:11

Cant believe someone would make a statrement that if Watson was selected he/she would not support the boks!! Atleast with him in the team you kniow you would have a fighting chance. Yes he might be way to out spoken, but just look at PdV selection, what kind of a statement is that?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:12

I am so excited to see Jano play behind an actual pack of forwards. He plays brilliantly behind a poor pack, so I cant wait to see what he can do when on the front foot. He is the next generation bok scrumhalf!!! Go Bulls!

  • DAVEY - 2009-05-20 08:15

De Villiers is out of his depth--we have great players but poor coaching will see us lose to the Lions--remember Carel?

  • Met Uysh! - 2009-05-20 08:18

Yeah right, the rugby public are idiots!!! Expecting us to believe that January is on better form than Kokket!! January knew he did not have to play well because his selection is automatic!! Hopefully January can get back into shape before the Lions tour because hell, they gonna think he's been selected for prop!!! Oh, and January does not have a humour....

  • Tony Polony - 2009-05-20 08:23

Mr Bradley - go live in the land of the rising damp. No Springbok jersey for Watson. By the way - it's Springbok and NOT SpringbUk - Mr BradlEE

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:23

Has anyone seen a lions super14 game where Earl Rose didn't get charged down atleast once, coz I haven't.

  • Tony Polony - 2009-05-20 08:24

Mr Bradley - go live in the land of the rising damp. No Springbok jersey for Watson. By the way - it's Springbok and NOT SpringbUk - Mr BradlEE

  • kitt - 2009-05-20 08:24

de Villiers - it will be ur fault if we lose the series against the lions. please could you select players that are in form and not by reputation.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:24

Rory should've been on that list

  • Tim - 2009-05-20 08:25

No Puke good hope he catches a hint and buggers off overseas but I dont think anyone there wants him. But Stephan not getting a look in I could understand it with Monte but out of the current crop he is the best, did Div watch the same game that all of us did on Saterday and the whole super 14 Stephan was the best out of the Sharks team. And to the sharks Guys the Currie Cup is coming, you showed how you can play on Saterday, kick butt

  • Jeff Aucamp - 2009-05-20 08:25

Puke number 3 eigthman in the country? You gotta be kidding. He is not even remotely close to the top 5.So if Kanko or Spies get injured then we sit with another quota player.Heaven forbid! All the same, life is funny.Puke growing a beard so he can look lige Geo Cronje. But he actually looks like something else which also has hair around it.....

  • kitt - 2009-05-20 08:25

de Villiers - it will be ur fault if we lose the series against the lions. please could you select players that are in form and not by reputation.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:26

You have to remember that Ruan Pienaar is injured and that Morne is not available for selection because he plays for the Bulls in the knockout phases and thats why Earl is in there. Agreed that Earl is probably not even third best in that position but I think Andre Pretorius is nearing retirement and Grant is heading overseas so you dont have much choice. That said when Ruan and Steyn are ready they should be in the front line but you never know.

  • Steve - 2009-05-20 08:31

Kockott is by far our stand-out scrumhalf andat worst should be on the bench of BIL tour. If he is going to "experiment" withnew talent against the BIL we will see our ass's bigtime and the northern hemisphere will put another SBok scalp in the cabinet

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:43

You go Jeff my boytjie !!!!

  • Magno - 2009-05-20 08:43

Rose has his moments and has always had a bit of flair - but Kockott really should be there ! Newman - who the hell is he ?? but with all the injuries ! we will have to see, Puke really was not good enough and he needed all the attention so the fans wouldn't forget that he was there, but Spies and Ryan are different league. Puke should start training as a flyhalf ! there's always lots to say in this position. Our front row will be pushed back - sorry to say this - but this is new rugby not old and scrums are not as important as they used to be. More mobile forwards add better value to the team.

  • Bruer - 2009-05-20 08:45

The Luke Watson saga continues to simmer. To my knowledge he has not shown any remorse for his utterances, If this is the case it indicates that he still has the same feelings for the Springboks and all they stand for. I believe that, if he were to come out and apologise, and mean it, many true rugby followers would accept it, and move on. Then, if he were picked on merit, even though I personally don't believe he is in the same class as Pierre and Kanko for 8th man, I for one would support the choice.

  • Robert Lancaster - 2009-05-20 08:46

PdV is a liar!!! Go to SARugby.co.za and look at the loose forward stats. The ONLY stat where Spies and Kanko did better than Luke where meters gained. In just every other facet Luke was better. Tackles made, least tackles missed (Spies missed twice as many tackles as Luke), passes, T/O's made etc. In the matches versus the Bulls and the Sharks the stats do not lie and show that Luke head-to-head outperformed both Kankowski and Spies. Versus the Cheetahs he outplayed Brussouw, Hendo and Juan. THE STATS DO NOT LIE!!! Luke is the best man for the job on form and deserves to be in the squad. PERIOD. PdV is a liar, a coward and a politician only looking to feather his own nest and ingratiate himself with Stofile and other the other ANC members he supports. This squad was not selected on merit based on Super 14 performances. Earl Rose being in the squad is another shining example of this. Spies is the worst performing out of the three.

  • Terry The Terrible - 2009-05-20 08:47

IT IS VERY DISGUSTING THAT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT TRANSFORMATION ARE JUST NOT DOING SO. DIV WAS CHOSEN AS A BOK COACH AHEAD OF OTHERS BECAUSE OF HIS COLOUR. NOT BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST!! SO! WHO IS HE TO JUDGE THE BRILIANT LUKE against the mediocre PIERRE SPIES. NOW THAT MR DIV IS COACHING A WHITE HE SOMMER FEELS HE IS ALSO ONE OF US. WATSON IS A TRUE GENIUS WHO INSPIRES and REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF MANY BLACK KIDS IN TOWNSHIPS. YOU HAVE MY VOTE LUKE!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:49

Ben - u better believe it.....and I am not alone with this thinking. Wearing the Springbok jersey is an honour and defacing it is tantamount to treason. Respect it, honour it - win or lose !!! Hasnt Chippy told Puke the Nat's are no more ??

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:52

Rory Kockott has been the inform scrummy for super 14. Yes he is cocky at times but thats the role of a good scrummy. He is also an excellent place kicker, something that lacks in all the other scrum halfs. PDV needs to wake up and smell the roses cause you gonna need good kickers and good backups.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 08:53

Shocking that Ludik was not considered! He is on top form. Stefan is an excellent kicker, but that is all he does! When he does run with the ball he never makes it past the first line of defence. His body is getting old and soft, still one of SA;s greats, but not the best anymore. Ludik is in his prime and if you watch how he has been playing lately you would agree that he is the best. I can only imagine what his game would be like behind a better team like the sharks, or maybe the Springboks(although I don't have much faith in DeVilliers' selected side). Good luck to them, they now have to prove that they deserve it.

  • Gert - 2009-05-20 08:57

Jus this to set the record. The puke issue...people should no the facks before judging some one on that, that said Luke has played really good rugby year. I think he is unlucky not to get selected. Pierre Spies has not played as well as he should. He should still have been picked & selected for flank with Deysel. Rory is allso unlucky but having watched Vermaak play that is not a bad selection but a good one. I would select Rory & Vermaak over Fourie at scrum half. & yes Stephen U should be there there not that F-ing useless piece of crap that is smaller then my 15 year old son playing under 16 rugby. go bokke

  • des - 2009-05-20 08:58

every selector gets flack. give DIV a chance. maybe he just wants earl and ricky to show how bad they are against NAM so that he can legitemately drop them. no way will they play against the lions. full pionts though for recognising puke,s mediocrity.

  • Dylan - 2009-05-20 09:01

What is the Muppet thinking leaving Kockott out of the squad? Vermaak is pretty solid though but its that fiery persona of Rory's that wins games & its an extra decent place kicker in the team! This douche is destroying the world champions with every side picked!! The only reason Earl rose made the side is because he is one of the coaches "brassa!" Hopefully after a run in with the large Namibians douche bag De Villiers will realise Rose is far to shit for international rugby. He just doesn't have the BMT that we need from okes who are gona run out in the Green & Gold. oh yes & he weighs 10kgs!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-20 09:03

Since DV is an ANC supporter I will be supporting the BRITISH LIONS just as the ANC supported the All Blacks - Remember?

  • Frost - 2009-05-20 09:04

What the hell does Div know about form? Rose! Mmmmm.......
