Port Elizabeth - Luke Watson says exciting times lie ahead at the Eastern Province Kings who are preparing for the upcoming Currie Cup Premier Division.

The 30-year-old loose forward was on Tuesday named as Kings captain for Friday night's friendly against the Bulls in Port Elizabeth.

He will return to action after a lengthy layoff due to a foot injury.

Watson said he was looking forward to being back after the long injury stint, wherein he had six screws and a metal plate placed in his foot following a previously misdiagnosed fracture.

“It has been a long process and a bit of a frustrating one. I am very excited. It is still going to be a process building to Currie Cup as the foot adjusts to the work-load," he said via a statement released to the media on Tuesday.

The former 10-Test Springbok said he was looking forward to the Kings' re-entry into the Currie Cup top flight.

“It’s an exciting time, we have a lot of youngsters coming in and with Carlos (Spencer, coach), who is one of the most exciting rugby players the world has ever seen, and with him heading it up it’s an exciting time to be involved in the Kings.

“One of our biggest strengths is that there is an unknown element, there is a bit of mystery surrounding what we’re going to bring and the sort of rugby we’re going to play,” concluded Watson.

The game between the Kings and Bulls XV takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday (19:00 kick-off).

It will form part of the Kings' preparations for the Currie Cup Premier Division. They will also play a Sharks XV in PE on July 4 before starting their Currie Cup campaign at home against Western Province on August 8.
