Cape Town - Western Province have claimed the bragging rights against the Cell C Sharks XV in a fiercely contested coastal derby win of 32-12 (half-time 22-7) held at the City Park Stadium, Cape Town on Saturday.

The visitors were flying high after a comprehensive 53 – 0 victory last week while WP had also earned a bonus point in a bruising encounter against the neighbouring Boland Cavaliers.

Eightman Rayn Smid gave Province an early lead with flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis missing the conversion.

A penalty attempt a few minutes later allowed the youngster to find his sights and also extended the lead to 8-0.

Big prop Wilco Louw then showed that the heavies can also contribute in the try-scoring department and Du Plessis banged over the conversion to take WP out to a 15-0 lead.

The next few minutes were frenetic and Sharks flanker Khaya Majola opened the scoring for his team with a try shortly thereafter.

The two teams had barely restarted play following the conversion by Lionel Cronje when the try-scoring machine that is Sikhumbuszo Notshe scored a fifth try for the season and his team’s third of the afternoon.

After the Du Plessis conversion Province led by a commanding score line of 22-7 and this was the same score at the break.

Fullback Grant Hermanus then showed why he is playing senior provincial rugby just a year after finishing school and went over to seal the bonus point for his team.

Despite a try by replacement Khulu Marwana the Sharks never threatened to claim the victory and it was Du Plessis who had the final say scoring wise with a penalty to make it 32-12.

Matt Turner, the English Sevens Rugby International, was shown a yellow-card on 74 minutes but the score remained the same and WP claimed another full house of log points.

Both teams have a bye next week and WP will resume their campaign against the EP Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in PE with the Sharks having to regroup when they face the Free State XV in Kokstad.
