Vodacom Cup scraps Mondays

Kimberley - South African rugby unions can breathe a sigh of relief over the much-debated fixture schedule for the Vodacom Cup.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) had planned on moving the majority of the 2012 Vodacom Cup matches to Mondays due to a cluttered Super Rugby calendar, but none of the unions approved the proposal tabled last year, SARU’s head of communication Any Colquhoun said on Wednesday.

“At least two of the unions had to vote in favour of the proposal,” he said. “None of them did, so we will have to look for an alternative.”

Some of the matches would have been played on Saturdays, with one or two matches played on Wednesdays and the majority on Mondays.

“It looks like we might be falling back on Fridays and Saturdays,” Colquhoun said.

Monday matches would have had a negative impact on smaller unions like the Griquas.

Several of the Peacock Blues are also part of the Cheetahs’ Super Rugby team and their continued involvement in both teams would have condemned players to non-stop travelling between Kimberley and Bloemfontein, damaging their chances of getting a game at either team.
