Johannesburg - JC Roos scored 21 points to lead the Steval Pumas to a 31-23 (halftime 15-13) win over the Leopards XV in their Vodacom Cup North Section match at Profert Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Friday.

According to the supersport.com website, flyhalf Ross scored a try and kicked two conversions and four penalties as the Leopards clinched their fourth win of the season and move to just three points behind the second-placed Golden Lions although the Lions, who have a bye this weekend, have a game in hand.

The Pumas made a fast start to the match as flank Jaco Bouwer crashed over for an unconverted try in just the second minute.

However, the Leopards took the lead in the 15th minute thanks to the pivot Kobus du Plessis’s second successful penalty attempt of the match.

The second quarter of the first half saw a spate of scoring as the Pumas regained the lead through a try from Frikkie Spies and a penalty from Roos in the 32nd minute.

But the Leopards ensured that they reached the break trailing by just two points when fullback Sergio Torrans darted over for a converted try with just three minutes left in the half.

The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges in the second half and they roared in to a 23-15 lead after 45 minutes thanks to a converted try from right wing Jaco Hayward and another penalty from Du Plessis.

But the Pumas were not to be denied and they took the lead for the third time thanks to three Roos penalties in the space of eight minutes.

Roos rounded off a final personal performance with a well-deserved try, in the 73rd minute, as the Pumas denied the Leopards XV the consolation of a bonus point for losing by less than seven points.
