Griquas destroy SWD

Kimberley - GWK Griquas have cemented a home semifinal in this year's Vodacom Cup competition by beating the SWD Eagles 84-15 in the sides quarterfinal encounter at GWK Park on Saturday afternoon.

Against the Eagles, who surprised DHL Western Province last weekend to claim their quarterfinal spot, Griquas attacked from the get go and put together some useful phases before full back Gouws Prinsloo kicked a penalty in the 5th minute to give the hosts the early lead. Prinsloo was again called into action shortly thereafter and kicked his second penalty of the afternoon to give Griquas an early lead of 6-0.

SWD did manage to put together some attacking phases of play, but a try by Griquas scrum half Tian Meyer after eighth man Leon Karemaker broke away against the run of play snubbed their momentum. Prinsloo converted a difficult kick from the sideline to stretch Griquas lead to 13 points.

It opened up again for the hosts shortly thereafter with winger Rocco Jansen scoring Griquas second try of the afternoon after a quick tap from a penalty. Prinsloo again was on song with the conversion, opening up the deficit to 20 points.

The latter was again called into action shortly thereafter to convert replacement eighth man Burger Schoeman's try. The latter scored Griquas third try of the afternoon after he broke away from the break down.

Four minutes from halftime the Eagles finally had something to smile about after flanker Shaun Raubenheimer caught the Griquas defenders napping. He jotted down under the upright and fly half Karlo Aspeling converted. The Eagles finished the first stanza on a high after winger Hentzwill Pedro fell over in the corner. Aspeling missed with the conversion, but kicked a penalty to make the halftime score 30-15 in Griquas favour.

Griquas started the second half at pace, with centre Jonathan Francke and scrum half Meyer both going over for converted tries within the space of five minutes. Thereafter lock Jonathan Adendorf also went over, with Prinsloo converting.

SWD tried their best to keep the hosts from crossing the whitewash, but in the end the hosts scored at will, with replacement winger Danie Dames and Prinsloo, who succeeded with all but one of his kicks at goal, also crossing the white wash. Ewald van der Westhuizen (prop) and Ederies Arendse also went over along with a host of their teammates.
