EP Kings down Pampas XV

Stellenbosch - The EP Kings overturned a 12-point deficit on their way to a 34-26 win (half-time 21-20) over the Pampas XV in their Vodacom Cup match at the AK Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday.

The Kings found themselves trailing 20-8 after 24 minutes but a powerful forward display and 14 points from the boot of scrumhalf Falie Oelschig helped the visitors to a fine win against the defending champions.

The match was a scrappy affair with the two teams combining to concede 19 penalties in the first half alone, with the Pampas XV responsible for 22 penalties overall, with many of the infringements coming at the breakdown.

The home team made their intentions clear from the kickoff and they made liberal use of their backline to stretch the Kings’ defence and the approach paid dividends as early as the third minute when right wing Ramiro Moyano scored in the corner after the Pampas had taken the ball through eight phases of play.

The visitor’s forwards had the measure of their opponents in the opening exchanges and they won a penalty at the break down which allowed Oelschig to make the score 7-3 after 13 minutes.

But the Pampas XV raced into a commanding 20-8 lead thanks to a long-range converted try from inside centre Lisandro Gomez Lopez and two penalties from flyhalf Santiago Gonzalez Iglesias with the Kings only response an unconverted try from the impressive eighthman Jacques Engelbrecht.

The Pumas XV were being let down by their discipline and Oelschig kicked the Kings back into the contest with two penalties before the visitors took the lead for the first time when, on the stroke of half-time, flyhalf Shane Gates ghosted through a gap for a converted try.

Iglesias and Oelschig traded penalties at the start of the second half before Kings flank Boetie Brits was mauled over for a try in the 55th minute as the visitors moved into a 29-23 lead.

The Kings made sure of the win, in the 68th minute, when Brits was driven over for his second try after Pampas replacement prop Nahuel Lobo was yellow-carded after referee Stuart Berry grew frustrated with the hosts numerous penalties.

Iglesias kicked a late consolation penalty for the hosts to complete the scoring.
