Cape Town - Former Boland and Bulls centre Dewey Swartbooi has been appointed as new head coach of the University of Johannesburg’s Varsity Cup team.

According to Netwerk24, Swartbooi will replace Werner “Skollie” Janse van Rensburg, who recently resigned having taken charge of UJ since 2013.

Swartbooi made headlines last year when he - along with four other employees - took the Bulls to court following a retrenchment process.

Earlier this year, he was again appointed at the Bulls as assistant coach of their Under-19 side.

Swartbooi joined the Bulls at the end of 2015 from Boland where he had been interim head coach. He started as backline coach of the Blue Bulls’ Under-19 side.

The 36-year old is now hoping to be released from his contract at the Bulls so he can start in his new role on Monday.

UJ will open their 2019 Varsity Cup campaign on Monday, February 4 when they host last year’s losing finalists NWU-Pukke at the UJ Stadium in Johannesburg.

On the same day, UCT host newly-promoted UWC at the University of Cape Town, defending champions Maties’ take on Wits at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, while CUT - who narrowly escaped relegation last year - will travel to Pretoria to take on UP-Tuks.

UJ finished third on the 2018 Varsity Cup log and were beaten 60-31 in the semi-finals by, ironically, NWU-Pukke.

The 2019 Varsity Cup will run from Monday, February 4 until Monday, April 15.
