Maties secure top spot in Varsity Cup log

Cape Town - Maties came from behind to draw with Pukke in Potchefstroom, while there were also wins for Shimlas, Tuks and UJ in the final round of Varsity Cup fixtures on Monday.

Maties' 33-33 stalemate with Pukke gave the Stellenbosch side top spot in the final standings, and thus a home semi-final next week against Wits at their Danie Craven Stadium.

Kick-off is at 19:00.

Wits, who had a bye in the final round of matches, finished fourth.

Shimlas' 69-33 win over CUT wasn't enough to see them into the playoffs, while Tuks, the defending champions, were far too strong for the Madibaz, winning 82-21, to condemn the Port Elizabeth side to bottom spot in the standings.

UJ snuck past the UCT Ikeys 18-17 to snatch third place in the standings, and book a semi-final against Pukke at the Fanie du Toit Stadium next Monday.

Kick-off is at 16:30.

Both matches will be televised on SuperSport.
