Confusion! Wits lose, then draw against Maties

Cape Town - There was confusion at the conclusion of Monday night’s Varsity Cup match between Wits and Maties in Johannesburg when the home side scored a last-gasp try to snatch a draw.

WRAP: Varsity Cup - Week 5

Maties were leading 30-21 heading into the final minute when Wits fullback Tyrone Green scored, with flyhalf Chris Humphries converting.

Officials originally ruled that Green had only scored a five-point try and Maties were deemed 30-28 victors.

However, match officials afterwards ruled that it was in fact a seven-point try and that the match was drawn.

The final result was then changed to 30-all.

A statement released by Varsity Cup read:

“Match officials confirmed that the final play originated in Wits’ half with Wits retaining the ball which resulted in the a seven-point try. According to Varsity Cup’s Point of Origin rule, a team will receive seven points for a try which originated in their own half.

“Wits restarted the game with a kick off. The halfway line is the point of origin. Maties knocked the ball backwards and were never in possession of the ball. Wits regathered the ball and retained possession and then scored and collected bonus points for the Point of Origin rule.”
