Van den Heever signs for WP

2011-10-24 09:32

Cape Town - Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Blue Bulls utility player Gerhard van den Heever has transferred to Western Province and the Stormers.

The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd and WP Rugby on Monday  announced that the 22-year-old player, who excels as wing and fullback, has signed with Province for two years.

Van den Heever was contracted to the Vodacom Bulls until October 31, 2013, but after successful negotiations between the two provinces, has been transferred to Western Province and will join them from November 1, 2011.

Van den Heever, who was born in Bloemfontein and schooled in Pretoria, made his provincial and Super Rugby debuts in 2009. He has 41 provincial caps (20 tries) and 31 Super Rugby caps (12 tries).

The BBC’s Head: Rugby, Heyneke Meyer commented on the move by saying: “I am happy that there is an opportunity for Gerhard in a very good environment.  It is a coincidence that he will now play for the team that he made his debut against in 2009. We wish him good luck with his career and we truly hope that he will achieve his goals.”

Commenting on the signing WP Senior Professional Coach Rassie Erasmus said, “We are happy that after we were able to conclude a similar transfer deal with the BBC for the in-contract Lionel Cronje earlier this season, that we were then able to successfully conclude this negotiation. We believe Van den Heever to be a quality player with the right attributes to fit into our set-up and vision for the immediate future. Despite his young age he brings solid experience at Super Rugby level. We have a settled base of senior players and a number of emerging young stars and we believe he has the potential to make a valuable contribution at a number of levels.”

We need props not backline players that are going to sit on the bench week in and week out!!!!!!!!

      Ryan - 2011-10-24 09:49

Yep. Not just props, a tight five. Pointless buying all these backline players

      siener.vanzyl - 2011-10-24 09:53

Hulle maak nie so lekker sin nie.

      Lionel - 2011-10-24 09:58

Ryan, lucky Bekker and Elsadt will be back next season and there are one or two other locks coming through the ranks@Siener,ja nee ek stem,ek weet nie hoekom het hulle vir Sadie laat gaan nie,ek sou Sadie gehou it in plaas van Habana............

      Paulus - 2011-10-24 10:23

      i just wana say isak..............i told u so..........ul lose.........and u did

      Ryan - 2011-10-24 10:50

@Lionel. Yes i know we have Bekker and Elstadt but it was proven this weekend, if they get injured we don't have decent replacements.

      Oukoos - 2011-10-25 14:46

Lionel You know it I know it We all know it All except the WP rugby management

  • Staalbal - 2011-10-24 09:51

I would rather have JJ, but vd Heever is not a bad player. Rassie should look to get some more depth at prop, and a proper fetcher would also not be a bad idea.

      giepievz - 2011-10-24 10:12

Jup. We need a good fetcher like that other guy... what's his name? Oh yes. Luke Watson.

      Gordon - 2011-10-25 14:38

He should have been in the Bok team two seasons ago, but they persisted with Habana, very good move WP.

  • Robs - 2011-10-24 09:53

I will have to change my attitude to the young man and give him all my support. He definitely got tired of playing for a loosing team and decided to move to a winning? one.

      Jou - 2011-10-24 10:06

You were watching the semi this weekend right??

      Robs - 2011-10-24 10:15

It was all tongue in the cheek. Did you see the question mark behind the winning.

  • Facts - 2011-10-24 10:01

WP, Rassie, whoever. WAKE UP! We need props, locks and many of them. I don't mind van den Heever but we are top heavy at the backs and pathetic in the front. Stop building the team around defence and get the right forwards to give the ball to the backs so that we can play attacking rugby for a change. We are not going to get ANYWHERE with the current situation.

  • Dan - 2011-10-24 10:03

At least now the Stormers will have someone to replace Habana with. Gerhard is a great player, but he never really fitted in with the Bulls. I think he will do well in the Cape. Good to see two professional unions negotiating in the interest of rugby. Just a pity their supporters can't act the same way.

      Lionel - 2011-10-24 10:55

Same can be said about SOME of the low life supporters that support the Bulls, hey Dan!!!!!!

  • Jou - 2011-10-24 10:04

If for 11 years you dont succeed buy and buy again....

      Shoosh - 2011-10-24 15:28

      Jou moer!

  • Pieter - 2011-10-24 10:16

Rassie, ek sien jy koop in. Dis goed so.

  • Philip - 2011-10-24 10:22

For the price of Habana WP could have bought an entire front row that could at least be competitive????

  • Koos - 2011-10-24 10:29

2.10 jaar beker loos! 3.Laaste 22 jaar net 3 Curriebekers 4. Wepe moet meer as 70 jaar in die gekiedenis gaan delf om meer Curriebekers as die bulle te wen 5.Bulle wen 23 Curriebekers van af 1939,die wepe wen 23 van 1914 af 6.wepe kon nog nooit n Superbeker wen nie 7.Drie wepe rejects help Bulle en Sharks om n paar Curriebekers en 3 Superbekers te wen(Derick Houghaard, Francois Houghaard,Brent Russel) 8.Jong wepe sterre staan tou om by Bulle en Sharks te speel(If you can't beat them join them) 9 Grootse ondersteuning vir NZ/Crusaders buite NZ= Nuweland(as ek na die wepe se rekord kyk kan ek dit verstaan) 10 Luke watson wil op springbok trui kots terwyl hy vir wepee speel WP is toe Nie so lekading Nie ! ! ! ! ! !

      Staalbal - 2011-10-24 14:35

  • Bames - 2011-10-24 10:36

Hang on! Where are all those talented youngsters the WP folk like to brag about? No wings? Are those youngsters playing in the u19 and u21 finals this coming weekend? Who is?

  • Steenbra - 2011-10-24 10:38

I was very dissappointed with our front row. And the backrow. Damn hard to compete for the ball with one player competing against three. Would play Carr ahead of Koster. Liebenberg looked like an angry bull without using his head. And as some people mentioned Greek didnt attack the gainline. What angers me is that AC and co is still hanging onto the idea that kick and defend wins games.. The game is played with a ball that points are given when the ball is dotted down behind the opposing goal line and dont win games by giving away the ball..

  • Dewald - 2011-10-24 10:41

  • Tim - 2011-10-24 10:42

WTF??????? why sell Sadie and JJ and buy this donkey who cant tackle??????

  • Koos - 2011-10-24 10:55

      Oukoos - 2011-10-24 19:03

Ek moes eers my keyboard laat regmaak - al die trane wat ek gestort het, het die elektronika behoorlik opgef@k Geniet dit while it last!

  • Zaahid - 2011-10-24 12:32

with 88 clubs in the Western Cape and 'good' u21 and u19 teams, they go and shop yet again elsewhere.....

  • jacques.ackermann - 2011-10-24 14:23

  • Jean - 2011-10-25 08:42
