Uys to lead Cheetahs in Currie Cup

Cape Town - Loose forward Francois Uys will be the Free State Cheetahs’ captain in this year’s Currie Cup, Netwerk24 reports.

The 29-year-old also captained the Cheetahs in this year’s Super Rugby competition and coach Franco Smith has opted for consistency by retaining Uys as the team’s leader for the Currie Cup.

Hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld led the Cheetahs in last year’s Currie Cup when Rory Duncan was the coach.

Duncan has since been made Director of Rugby at the union.

Van Jaarsveld is also part of Namibia’s squad for the upcoming Rugby World Cup so he won’t be available for the entire Currie Cup.

The Cheetahs open their Currie Cup campaign at home against the Blue Bulls on Saturday, August 8.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
