Div says he deserves a medal

2011-08-02 22:30

Cape Town - He deserves a medal after four years as Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers said on Tuesday.

"And a big one too," the coach boldly stated.

According to Die Burger newspaper, De Villiers and SA Rugby Union (SARU) CEO Jurie Roux were in Parliament to inform the portfolio committee on sport and recreation about preparations for next month’s Rugby World Cup tournament.

De Villiers said the coaching team did an excellent job of forging players from different unions with different game patterns into a world-class team within a few weeks - despite some injuries.

He outlined plans for winning the World Cup, as well as some of the team's weaknesses, strengths and what they see as threats.

He described one of the weaknesses as an inability to deliver the knockout punch.

“We need a killer instinct,” said De Villiers.

MPs grilled De Villiers and SARU about the Springboks’ defeats during the Tri-Nations tour of Australia and New Zealand. They repeatedly asked why the best team stayed at home, accusing De Villiers of persisting with players whose game is not up to scratch.

But De Villiers maintained that the team has enough experience and talent to be crowned the best in the world, and Roux insisted that the best available players went on tour. Injured players attended a rehabilitation camp in Rustenburg and SARU has the medical certificates to prove it.

De Villiers stressed that team selections have never been motivated by sentiment and that experience, leadership and “class” were critical. “We first decide what we want before we look at the names. … There has never been a sentimental selection.”

ANC MPs used the opportunity to attack SARU about the lack of transformation.

According to the Beeld newspaper, Committee chairman Mgolodi Dikgacwi said players of colour are disappearing, while the “white laaities” continue to progress. He wanted to know what SARU was doing about it.

“The past two weeks the Sharks and the Cheetahs on the field were 100% white. Is no development taking place in those provinces? If you don’t tell them what the criterion is they will not come right.”

    Dellusional, leaves one speechless.

      Yoni - 2011-08-02 23:00

      He deserves a moerse snotklap!

      POLLENYS - 2011-08-02 23:39

Anyd doubts that this man is a selfrighteous fool and an embarassment to himself an SA Rugby has now been removed by himself.

      Andrew - 2011-08-02 23:41

@Fred. Apparently that is the expectation. I have found that the less educated people are that the more out of touch with reality they become as they simply do not collect the required experience and life skills to make intelligent choices. I am not saying the people are stupid but merely that education consists not only of passing academic courses but generations of parents passing on life skills and common sense to children. They say that the problem with common sense it that it simply is not that common anymore. Peter displays classic Dunning - Kruger symptoms.

      Jarhead - 2011-08-02 23:42

Now Paddy why did you have to go and insult the players? As far as I know they don`t select themselfs you know... And Smith, Brussow and Rossouw can be my loose trio any day as these three are some of the few players that when not injured consistently played their hearts out the last few seasons and can hold their heads high!! Steyn playes the way he does because he is coached to play that way, he didn`t start out his career as a kicking flyhalf.... As for Steggies and Spies, well Spies has showed in the past that when he is on form he is very dangerous so hopefully he can up his game in the next two games but Steggies is just not using his oppertunities he has been given and will have to stay at home....

      sjacksch - 2011-08-03 01:27

Medal for ????????? Dear Snorre.... You took over a winning combination from Jake White , for political reasons , now you got a big bek , what have you achieved ?????? ! You take a coach like Coetzee ( ALTHOUGH I HATE PROVINCE ) , BUT , Coetzee is a coach , Snorre you just a political pawn with no people skills !!!!!!!!!!! For me sport has no colour , IF YOU GOOD ENOUGH , YOU DESERVE TO BE IN THE TEAM :)

      Creeky - 2011-08-03 02:42

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 08:32

the Bokke won the tri-nations and the lions series under him. then it was the players and Jake white. They coached themselves apparently. The most rediculouse load of crap i have ever heard. i remember reading one week when the boks won it was jakes teams and his game plan and the players coached themselves. The very next week they lose and its Divs fault! OMP. talk about been delusional. Now recently i read that Rassie was needed to teach the players the finer points, because the coach didnt look at the details. Dont forget these palyers were apparently coaching themselves to series wins against the lions and to the tri-nations win. So why do they need coaching now and why is it his fault when they lose? did they forget what they were coaching themselves?

      Gazza69 - 2011-08-03 08:42

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 08:58

@Kok - And not one person here can tell me why its his fault when they lose and the players and jake when they win.

      IC1 - 2011-08-03 09:27

@ Fred, yep and a bonus if you are a bonafide AA appointment LOL

      Chronoman - 2011-08-03 10:06

@Leftyloosy and @Kok, the reason why oakes always go for PdV is because of his lack of diplomacy and the most recent 2 games when he excluded the current Boks from the team. He "thought" that the team would still be able to compete. I agree that the Boks have achieved a lot under him, and in important competitions. What is overlooked is that he had good credentials when he took over as coach and that the Boks HAVE played well under him. I just think it is unethical not to fieldyour best side because there is something like your supporters, the sponsors and national pride, and Div seems to forget the importance of these.

      MJ77 - 2011-08-03 10:15

      @ Yoni....not a snotklap....a PK.

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 10:27

@Chronoman - the lack of diplomacy came after he was been treated like crap even though his team won. Would you be diplomatic if you got the same flack he gets for loosing and then not getting the credit when they win. Think about it....I remember watching that first game he was incharge, they played Wales. If you did not watch the game you would have probably thought they lost. I have never ever seen that happen with anyother coach. The saying a win is a win didnt apply that day. On your other point. You are assuming he is the only one that made the decision to keep those players at home. I doubt saru would just allow him to field an under strength team. So its unfair now to try and single him out. Especially since when the team does well he doesn’t get any credit. Calling it unethical is a bit harsh; if they win the world cup would it have been worth it? The world cup is clearly more important to the union than the tri-nations. There's bigger sponsorship money and TV money when you have a team that holds the world cup. And lets be honest SARU has always been more interested in money than the game or player well fair.

      Shistirrer - 2011-08-03 10:34

      Common_Sense - 2011-08-03 10:47

I agree, he does deserve a medal. Unfortunately the medal for biggest moron of the century already went to George Bush!

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 10:51

@Chronoman - PS. i dont buy it that its because of diplomacy. Chester got the same treatment Div is getting now. The first game he got to coach the Cats was against the bulls. Rassie was his assistant. The Cats won the game and all the praise was heaped on Rassie. You would have sworn that he was head coach. Not one word about Chester. Rassie later came forward and said that Chester did all the analysis and formulated the tactics to beat the Bulls. And you never heard anything about that again.

      SupportSport - 2011-08-03 11:54

As of December 2009, the Springboks have won 17 of their 27 matches under the helm of De Villiers. The 62% win percentage includes a 57% win percentage against the All Blacks, the Springboks' fiercest rivals.[15] De Villiers is the first Springbok coach since Nick Mallet to have a 100% win record over the All Blacks in a single year (2009). De Villiers is also the first coach since Nelie Smith to have secured a series win over the British and Irish Lions.[16] "What I've learned in South Africa is that if you take your car to a garage where the owner is a black man and he messes up then you'll never go back to that garage again. If the owner's a white man you say, 'ah, he made a mistake', and you go back."

I see yes Andrew you are dellusional. Snor has his problems so too does Gary, Pitso and many of our national coaches. He cannot select an injured player and the world cup is more important than the Tri-nations. Please crusify him after the world cup, and maybe fire him but for now lets support OUR team. I am not even saying anything about the final comments in the article. TRANSFORMATION

  • Al Fraser - 2011-08-02 22:40

  • IBI - 2011-08-02 22:48

I see they have to report to government; proves that team is not on merit but subject to government approval

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 08:37

everyone knows theres quotas at age group level. max 6 black players can be selected. because there is a quota for white players too. there has to be 9 whites players in the team. boots & all or pale toe or interviewed one of the age group selectors a year or two ago. those were his words.

      Russ - 2011-08-03 08:44

@ IBI - yes, the SA Rugby team is subject to government approval. Just as it has been for decades - remember apartheid, when government ensured only whites could play? The difference is that now the government is trying to get representivity, not make the team exclusively one colour/race. It AMAZES me how people like you complain about government intervention, when there are still all-white teams playing and 80 to 90% of Springboks are still white! And btw, the players of colour who are there are playing on merit. Government intervention is necessary and will continue despite your whining - about time you dealt with that fact?

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:02

IBI so true. That is why my friends and I do not support the racists anymore. KEEP POLITICS AND SPORT SEPERATED. We need to contact all the sporting bodies who have ties with South African sport to ban them from playing international matches.

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:06

Leftyloosy what a load of rubbish. There is a minimum number of black players that must be chosen at provinsial level and the rest can go to the other race groups. I have personal experience because my daughter was denied entry into her provincial swimming team because she is white. So leftwing, before you spew your uneducational leftwing bull here, get your facts straight, moegoe.

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:07

Russ are you also on tik boet? No racism in sport. Finish and Klaar.

      Leftyloosy - 2011-08-03 09:28

@apie - wow i didnt know rugby and swimming are the same thing. lets not talk about education while you cant even comprehend the difference between two sports. What im saying is what i heard from a selector, you dont have to believe me, coz thats just the way it is in RUGBY (the sport not played in a pool and not run by swimming SA).

      Kaapie - 2011-08-03 09:36

Apie nou praat jy nonsense.. It depends on a number of factors and which province you from. Perhaps you should also say which team you are talking about. Whether it is a schools team or if it was at national level..Every province have certain criteria and every team provide the criteria beforehand. This applies to the province I am in..

      Russ - 2011-08-03 10:29

@ apie - no, I am not on tik. I put forward a rational argument, which you can agree with or disagree with. Redressing what was wrong in the past is not rascism. I am bewildered when I hear how people are unhappy with teh steps taken to right a previous wrong. I can only surmise that rascism lies behind an attack on an action designed to right a previous worng. Because if you acknowledge that a wrong existed, maybe you would attack the method, not the principle. - 2011-08-03 10:54

Apie - maybe your daughter was just not good enough. Sometimes this is a bitter pill to swallow pit it is true.

      James - 2011-08-03 22:13

I read today in the times that black medical students at UCT are accepted on lower matric results than whites, to ensure their intake is a majority. Our future doctors... you may ask me what this has to do with rugby... and I will tell you.... everything!

  • Andrew - 2011-08-02 22:48

Blacks can stuff up and not be held accountable for the bad performances but Jake White was called out of a tour to give reasons for poor performance. Shit it is great to be of color you cannot lose your job due to bad performance. you have to love this. Bloody crap to say the least. Kiss the World Cup Good Bye right now.

I recently actively stopped supporting Springbok and SA Super 15 Rugby. In fact I actively stopped suopporting South Africa completely. I have just had it with all this crap. I now suport another team from an overseas country that does not have this sort of this stuff going on. I say, put 15 blacks on the field and be done with it. Lets see what the result will be, from an arm chain in Auckland or Sydney or some similar city.

      jrchannell - 2011-08-02 23:01

Great - we don't need such fickle "supporters" anyway. Enjoy your "arm chain".

      Jarhead - 2011-08-02 23:07

You sir are a disgrace!! I agree wholeheartedly that the clown should never have been placed in charge with our Springbok team in the first place and that he has stuffed up our talent and team structures over the years. But to stop supporting our boys because of his mistakes is ludocrous!!! They need our support now more than ever!!

      Russ - 2011-08-03 08:52

No, we wont put 15 black players on the field as you suggest - that would be similar to apartheid era politics, something you seem to be missing. What we will do is press on with rehabilitating SA Rugby, and if we make mistakes along the way, we will learn from them and keep pressing on. I would rather have Div in charge with all the nonsense he speaks from time to time, than go back to an era of white coaches who choose white players. Rugby belongs to the people of SA, not a white old boys club who sit whinging on the sidelines, reminiscing about the good old apartheid days.

      Thats_that - 2011-08-03 09:10

@jrchannell, @Jarhead, seems looking at the votes on my comment, you both are strongly in the minority, not that I care what you both think. When the rugby and SA ship has completely gone under, you two will still be hanging on to the helm, telling yourselves that its all right, not to worry and that things will be better in the morning.

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:11

Thats_that well done. Somebody with principles. Leave the stupid whites who still support racism against their own kind.

      Jarhead - 2011-08-03 10:45

@Thats_that - Luckily I don`t live my life or base my opinions upon what others think so the votes don`t bother me! And maybe you should go read my comment a little bit slower so that you can understand what I said.... I am NOT arguing the fact that SA Rugby is on a landslide and therefore I`m not kidding myself into thinking everything is fine! What I commented about is that the PLAYERS needs our support!! It`s not their fault for what Snorre and SARU is doing! You must be a very weak and petty individual to jump ship so easily!!

      StaalBurgher - 2011-08-03 12:57

@Jarhead, he has hardly jumped ship at a drop of a hat. It has been many years of this ridiculous political BEE interference. At some point people are entitled to say "enough".

  • MrWhite - 2011-08-02 22:54

      James - 2011-08-03 22:19

Yes I think we are just beginning to see the results of shocking decisions based on misguided political ideals. The law of action and consequence sometimes takes a while to manifest, but when it does, the result is overwhelming and complete.

ALL HAIL P DIVI. REMEMBER - 'HE IS THE MAN AND HE DONT CARE A DAMN, HE IS A GOD GIVEN TALENT' lmao. great 2009, but please update your game-plan and get rid of adi jacobs 4eva please.

      slg - 2011-08-03 01:21

Unfortunately 2009 had little to do with the coaches. The leaders from the world cup were responsible for it. Remember also Brussouw wasn't even in the extended training camp selected by them. He had a huge impact that year. Were it up to the coaches, this would not have happened. He got in because of injuries.

      slg - 2011-08-03 01:23

Remember also the substituting debacles? The coaches inverted reality (and still do). They unwittingly sabotaged themselves, and us.

      And Wynand Olivier

      Bigboet - 2011-08-03 08:26

Its not bout Adi Jacobs anymore, its about all the crap players that he pick to be on the team like Kankowski, Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Wynand Olivier, Bakkies, Matfield, Smith, Juan Smith, Ashley Johnson, they all sleg and play crap. Running with the ball and kicking it in the modern day rugby is not enough, trying to bash through them is impossible. You need players that can create opportunities and score tries, like Lamby, De Jong, Aplon.

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:15

Bigboet good players like de Jong and Aplon? They would not even make a super 15 team in NZ or Australia. You must be from the Flets, booytjie.

      Kaapie - 2011-08-03 09:40

Apie tht is why Aussies wont win the WC.. Even the Blacks regard De Jongh and Aplon a threat..

      Lance - 2011-08-03 11:23

Aplon and De Jong and good players...De Jongs defense isnt brilliant but both are worthy players. Aplon is the most elusive runner around only to be challenged by Cooper. @ Kok..Yes Wynand is just as crap as Jacobs, both are ok impact players if they have to be there. I say leave em out altogether. Allister Coetzee should have been the coach as he has a BRAIN and has composure..

@Kaapie & Bigboet I only see 7 points against the AB and 20 against the Aussies. And not Aplon or De Jongh are on the score sheets......

      CongoJohn - 2011-08-03 11:54

@Bigboet Oja and go look at Juan Smith's WC records,he scored in allmost all the matches in 2007.

      StaalBurgher - 2011-08-03 13:05

de Jongh is good but he is no Super Star like O'Connor or Cooper, no matter how much you him to be. Aplon is talented enough to be that good but he lacks the size to go all the way. It is way he will be "just good enough" instead of a world star. @sig, I repeat that over and over because people love to forget how PDivvy refused to do several things and only abject failure by the incumbent or injury forced his hand; (1) Morne ahead of Pienaar at flyhalf - Morne goes on to win the 2nd Test with that penalty kick (2) Play Brussow (who had a massive impact from the moment he came on) (3) To play Fourie (who scored the try that lead to us turning the Test match around and winning) ahead of Jacobs AND (4) Then went and dropped Francois Steyn (without whose massive boot we would not have beaten the All Blacks in Wellington in 2009). The guy is a complete idiot. Let us then not even talk about January, Kirchner and Smit at prop.

      Lance - 2011-08-03 15:25

@ Staal..My belief in De Jong is not that he is the best available at present but rather a viable fit option as back up to either Jean and Jacque. For Aplon..yes hes small but he's attacking ability is awesome which makes up for the od tackle he misses. He would be a good second option after FSteyn. Im looking at what we currently have to work with...Im prefering not to comapre them with Cooper, Connor etc...

      Kaapie - 2011-08-03 17:57

And congo what is your point.. their are 15 players on the field and in any case who spoke about scoring...

  • rimmoah - 2011-08-02 23:23

saru are experts at appointing clowns to their ranks

      apie - 2011-08-03 09:19

Creeky I remember seeing on the news how the anc threw a dinner party when div wa s chosen as the first 'black' bok coach. Since then helium has admitted voting for the anc. EVERYTHING THE ANC TOUCHES TURNS TO SHYTE.

      Kaapie - 2011-08-03 09:42

Whats wrong with voting for a paricular party.. nothing.. that is called freedom of choice. I suppose in Apie's case you can vote for any party as long as it is the party he votes for!

  • jock - 2011-08-02 23:26

apart from your fool of the month medal, mampara award and loser medal ,what other medal do you want

      GrannyC - 2011-08-02 23:45

Give him @rse#ole of the year award, only problem is, I doubt whether they could make a medallion that big.

      IC1 - 2011-08-03 09:34

@granny, sorry that medal already awarded to the entire ANC and their offspring party, collectively. Mind you he's part of that goon gang so by default he's got it already LOL

  • Shadow - 2011-08-02 23:29

Win the World Cup then you will get your medal :)

      Thats_that - 2011-08-03 09:12

We will in all likelyhood not make ittom the semi's.

      donns - 2011-08-03 12:53

He cant even win a game never mined the world cup

  • R.Suppards - 2011-08-02 23:41

The inscription on the 10 kg medal reads" There is no substitute for stupidity", the medal is only to be worn whilst swimming.

  • Limelite - 2011-08-02 23:42

Whilst the AB and Wallabies are playing exciting rugby, the Springboks under Div have played boring, losing rugby. Wasnt' it Div on SABC TV during the last world cup berating JW not fielding more players of color? According to him back then, he could've fielded an almost 100% black team in 2007. Where are we now under Div? A bunch of old men, running around looking like fools. And don't even talk about loser Dick Muir. What a pair of backward coaches.

  • GrannyC - 2011-08-02 23:45

Yeah right! He deserves a medal, ha-bloody-haa! Medals are given to achievers not @rse#oles!

  • Mickey Fin - 2011-08-03 00:05

Goes to show who is actually running this show. The ANC government that has successfully stuffed S A up. Can someone please shut Div up for f@#$ks sake!!!! No wonder the press in Australasia love him. Because he is such a clown and they love to take him out and without doing a thing from their side, he proves what an idiot he is time and time again. What an embarrassment.

  • Laurie - 2011-08-03 00:12

We're not really interested in what you think you deserve or admissions of your current failures (of which there are many)! Right now - for better or worse - you are the Springbok coach and, not sure you are aware of it, there is a RWC fast approaching. Maybe you should concentrate on trying to win a game (or two). Your recent performance suggests this might be quite a challenge.

  • Benniten - 2011-08-03 00:15

    DD, DoM Dwis

  • cruywagen - 2011-08-03 00:29

I am not an expert at rugby, but at the look of things I think Mr. de Villiers is fortunate to still have a Job. I am not sure how performance appraisals work in SA rugby, but clearly the training, development, warnings, discussions, and performance expectations after 4 years should now be taken into consideration and a decisions must be made on how to move forward to once again give the Nation a winning team. In any work situation the performance of teams is a reflection on the leadership. So Mr. De Villiers just like the season for some rugby players are over I think it is time for you to move on.

  • Shaman Pete - 2011-08-03 00:52

In '95 Mandela had to go against the rest of the Party Faithful to keep the Bok symbol going. The whole Div Disaster is little more than another aspect of the "divide and conquer" politics prevalent in current political discourse coming from the ANC. The destruction of the Bok symbol through Div's incompetent appointment feels to me as though it has been deliberately orchestrated ... no doubt the MPs will give him a medal ... he's done exactly what they have wanted him to. Remember the Boks for what they were; not the wilting proteas they have been turned into by petty political meddling.

  • slg - 2011-08-03 01:18

It's hard to comment on this kind of article. Journalists love to take a sound-bite and explode it into something it never was. If true, however, it should be clear to all that Peter does not deserve a medal. This would be his Ego speaking. There's been one good year since he took over, and that was the fruits of the very strong batch of players from the last world cup. These strengths have been squandered by Peter and his coaching staff, who have no experience winning at the highest level. Hence the Ego statement, if in fact it did happen. This is Proteas rugby.

  • Bronwen - 2011-08-03 01:25

He needs a medal for f*&&% up a good Springbok team that Jake White left him - bloody Idiot!!!!

      dee-k - 2011-08-03 14:12

I fully agree, and while we are on that, how about we take politics out of sports? I say if a white person is good a rugby then give him a chance, the same goes for blacks, indian coloureds, but only if they are good, not because some one thinks otherwise.

  • Petras - 2011-08-03 01:28

You don't get a medal, you get a CUP, like in the RWC, if you are good enought! I doubt you are you dumb f...k ANC Supporting A...hole!

Peter... bra! You are the laughing-stock of world rugby.

  • Paddy - 2011-08-03 04:12

@JARHEAD your name should actually be BONEhead. You believe that Brussow (flash in the pan and always injured, no lineout option dwarf) Smith (always injured and over the hill overrated) together with surely the dumbest SA no 8 ever can match the top teams? Are you out of your mind? Schalk, Flo, Vermeulen, Deysel, Alberts, Daniel, Strauss and even Kankowski and Potgieter are better. The only no 8 almost as useless as Donkey Rossouw is Steroids Spies. You should go and clean your fish tank mate!

  • Crabapple1 - 2011-08-03 05:11

  • munchkin.ross - 2011-08-03 06:15

That pic is mimicking the fact that we are kissing the world cup goodbye

  • Wayne - 2011-08-03 06:18

duh Villiers will forever be known as the affirmative coach that hijacked Jake White's blueprint and senior players to fool the public into believing that he was the real deal. He will always be a fake. Nothing he has done since 2008 has caught the imagination of the world. White's legacy haunts him like a perpetual nightmare.

  • Deon - 2011-08-03 06:27

The puppet have lots it all now , wants to be rewarded if he f%%^ up a good sport. But that's what happen now days when somebody F%^&up something in our beautiful country.

On transformation??Is a black player supposed to be in the side if he's not good enough??Or big enough?Or fast enough??Or skillfull enough???

  • cpsmit - 2011-08-03 06:53

I can only agree. The citation on the medal should read: To the idiot with the thickest skull and the most inflated ego to ever grace the airwaves as an embarrasment to S African sport.

  • PieterWolf - 2011-08-03 06:53

A dried cow patty wil serve well. I'ts big and will help with the growth of his " snorre" moustach

  • Lisa - 2011-08-03 06:54

He has been paid millions and what has he achieved, destroy the wonderful ground work that Jake and his team did. This time we will be the losers at the RWC....

  • Nesomaniac - 2011-08-03 06:56

WTF! He's just doing a job just like the rest of us only we don't get half the loot he does.
