Five changes to Bok line-up

2011-08-16 12:41

Port Elizabeth - The Springboks on Tuesday made five changes to the starting line-up for Saturday’s Castle Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth.

WIN: A personalised Bok jersey

There were recalls for flyhalf Morné Steyn, loose forward Willem Alberts, hooker Bismarck du Plessis and loosehead prop Gurthrö Steenkamp. Patrick Lambie replaces the injured Frans Steyn at fullback.

In changes to the bench, CJ van der Linde was recalled as one of two props named in a five-two split while, Ashley Johnson replaces Jean Deysel, while Tendai Mtawarira, Danie Rossouw and Butch James are also among the replacements. Deysel and Gerhard Mostert drop out of the match 22.

“This is our last chance to look at certain combinations before the Rugby World Cup. We’ve had these changes in mind since we started our planning for the international season, depending on the injury situation,” said Peter de Villiers, the Springbok coach.

Victor Matfield will captain the team for a 16th time in his record 107th Test appearance for the Springboks.

  • Green Oaks - 2011-08-16 12:50

Good side. I think it might be a stronger side than last week. Maybe Beast for Steenkamp

      Sarge - 2011-08-16 12:54

I agree, good looking team i would have also liked to have seen beast in for Guthro and Hougaard for Habana. But I guess we have no say in the matter anyway.

      Tools1 - 2011-08-16 12:56

Morne Steyn worries me a bit, they will target his chanel. If we can kick less posesion away we might pull a rabit out of the hat, I suppose Beast can feal hard done by as he was one of the best ball carrier for us made good meters. One just feals that as Pdv says "this is the last game for experimenting with combenations" should this not be in place 3 weeks to kick off?

      Durbsguy - 2011-08-16 13:03

      And Butch for Steyn

      Hanjo - 2011-08-16 13:05

Beast and Gurthro are simply rotated to give both guys some game time as this is the our last game(I know of) ahead of the WC, to be honest, Gurthro looked to be the guy in most need of game time, so starting him makes some sense

      Lucky Strike - 2011-08-16 13:08

Good team. I just believe that Aplon is a better fullback, especially with his long kicking ability. For the rest perhaps the Beast to start and Guthro come up later. Guthro however needs game-time. Let see what this team can do? Maybe they pull a springbok out of the hat!!

      Pictureof - 2011-08-16 13:18

Agreed, Great team, these guys will nail the All Blacks in every respect...except the irrelevant scoreboard. Remember in 1995 when the All Blacks dramatically won the world cup, It was a shame they handed the trophy to the goons with 15 points.

      Isikhulu - 2011-08-16 13:21

All Blacks (B side) 18 Springboks (A side) 9 with a yellow card.

      Makutu - 2011-08-16 13:30

Here is ideally, the Springbok Squad I'd have next year. 1. Coenie Oosthuizen (Beast Mtawarira), 2. Bismarck du Plessis 9Chilliboy Ralepelle), 3. Jannie du Plessis (Brok Harris), 4. Rynadt Elsdadt (Fransois Uys), 5. Flip van der Merwe (Andries Bekker), 6. Heinrich Brussouw (Derrick Minnie), 7. Josh Strauss (Marcel Coetzee), 8. Duane Vermeulen (Jean Deysel), 9. Francois Hougaard (Dewald Duwenage), 10. Patrick Lambie (Elton Jantjies), 11. Lwazi Mvovo (JJ Engelbrech), 12. Johan Sadie (Juan de Jong), 13. Robert Ebersohn (Lionel Mapoe), 14. JP Pietersen (Michael Killian), 15. Jaco Taute (Joe Pietersen (even though hs isn't in the country)), 16. Adriaan Strauss, 17. WP Nel, 18. Allistar Hargreaves, 19. Siya Kolisi/Ashely Johnson, 20. Jano Vermaak, 21. Gary van Aswegen, 22. Gio Aplon.

      Benny66 - 2011-08-16 13:44

Or maybe Beast for Habana? then bring on Hougard as Beast is sure to run out of steam after 79 mins! LOL

      Sh@rks Fever - 2011-08-16 13:45

Although I prefer Butch let us give Morne an opportunity to play with a pack of forwards that actually go forward. Perhaps if he is not on the back foot he will play better. The one stupid selection once again is dropping Jean Deysel and keeping Danie Rossouw. He has had a bad Super 15 and 3 bad tests including one with the Best bok team last week. Just crazy. But don't waste his time if you don't want him please send him back to the Sharks where he can pare up with Keegan and Kanko in the Currie Cup. Don't waste his talent by sitting him in a suit on the side of the field.

      kenroid - 2011-08-16 13:45

@ Lucky Strike - I also rate Aplon as a player but he had a shocking game vs Aussie!!! He couldn't catch the ball or find touch!

      Dilla - 2011-08-16 13:45

Makuthu you are smoking something really strong, and you are clearly dellusional when it comes to knowing who really our best players are. Your team would get spanked even worse than our so called B team

      flowing river - 2011-08-16 13:45

Why is Luke Watson not playing.........? Any chance of winning is now out the window!

      online2590 - 2011-08-16 13:59

finally an astute rugby analysis. great flowing river. luke watson is the only forward in this country capable of linking forwards to backline. 2012 here we come!!

      Totman - 2011-08-16 14:06

@Green Oaks. NO, NO, NO!!!! Beast for wing!!! They must just give him an advance like in golf. LOL!

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-16 14:12

I do like this side alot. I would prefer that DeJong was on the bench, as I think that replacing JDV during the second half if he doest break the NZ line wouldnt be a bad move. Go Bokke

      maloorsports - 2011-08-16 14:19

I agree. Would have liked to see the Beast in the starting line up. He was one of the stars last week. I can see the need to try out combinations - just not so sure whether you should do it against the All Blacks. Would have thought the inform players would start.

      Marshall - 2011-08-16 14:30

Don't forget that with F Steyn out, the Boks require someone who can kick reliably from ALL distances, and The Butcher simply lacks that ability. Morne needs to find some confidence, and off a solid platform, he might finally find some. As for those calling for Beast, the inclusion of Guthro is due to his lack of game time; I doubt he will play the full 80, thus Beast will provide impact later on. I have no issue with Lambie at 15, he deserves to be given a chance with the "A" team back-line.

      DeonL - 2011-08-16 14:41

I am happy about the team, but hope Beast play at least 40 minutes. Morne is the better kicker, we need him, but he needs to tackle better too.

      Mark Fysh - 2011-08-16 16:37

5 one of them the coach?

      Herdsman - 2011-08-16 17:13

...chopping and changing will do nothing for our WC side...stick with james at the least, nZ are going to have steyn for breakfast !

      flat bier - 2011-08-16 17:16

      Australia TBA ?????????copy and paste.

      AirAction - 2011-08-16 17:26

We need a win .Test's is all about winning . Suddenly SA supporters dont mind an improved loss. Dont let Div pull the wool over our eye's .

      Karoobloed - 2011-08-16 18:44

Generally a good side, except for Smit - Chilli should have been on the bench for this team - shame on you PdV! Aplon should also be on the bench. Both the Beast and Gurthro should be coached to be able to be back-up tighthead for JdPlessis, so that we do not need CJ plugging up a spot on the bench. Morne Steyn has his deficiencies but at least he will probably kick over all penalties in the opposition zone. James scan sub him at the right time. Despite his detractors Habana has a high workrate, and Hougaard could step up to replace him at a prudent time too. The Alberts, Brussow and Spies combo looks tantalising. Nice to have that good man Johnson on the bench too.

      Raymond - 2011-08-16 20:32

      Yes I agree with you.

      AirAction - 2011-08-17 07:08

Why did we have to lose all the test's to work this out ?

      realist - 2011-08-17 09:37

      SARU=racists=no more support.

  • BlueRaven - 2011-08-16 12:51

Go Victor! Go Bokke! Good luck for the game

      WP rugby11 - 2011-08-16 13:16

Victor was my first choice captain all along. This man has leadership written all over him. Together with Jean leading at the back ... cannot do better in the captain department.

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-16 13:23

Lets hope they keep him on as captain with John coming on as impact player.

      Travis - 2011-08-16 14:19

I am a Matfield fan, but not as captain. Too many times he has made poor decisions at crunch time, and it has cost us. There is no captain in SA at the moment who can rival JS. Worth his weight in gold. I am not happy to see M Steyn at flyhalf, but I guess the fair thing is to give him a decent run and see if he can pull his socks up.

      jk - 2011-08-16 14:39

its like you shouting for your sister playing netball- PUT SOME BACK INTO IT YOU NERDY BULL!!!

      Stefan72 - 2011-08-16 14:42

@BlueRaven... "John coming on as an impact player"... John? as in John Smit??? That's funny. (John Smit / Impact = oxymoron) .

      jk - 2011-08-16 14:47

stefan- raven het nie n clue waaroor jy praat nie, jy sal dit makliker moet maak vir hom, hys n bul...

      Circa - 2011-08-16 14:50

@ Travis Please tell us who was the captain when the Bulls won all their cups during the past 5 years?? Poor decisions you say, the Bull's trophies seem to indicate otehrwise?

      jk - 2011-08-16 15:01

you just as good as your last game circa- whats in the past...

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-16 15:16

Stefan John is going to be in the team, may as well be from the bench.

      Mojojo - 2011-08-16 15:29

The only impact JS will have is gifting the other team a try or 2. Now that we have dropped him to the bench, the next step is to have him where he should have been last year already, and that is out of the Squad. Victor is fine as Captain, Jean leading the backs is perfect, and we do have Mr Burger if something happens to both of them, and even Juan Smith if he heals in time. We have good leaders, and we do not have space for loosers.

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-16 16:36

Mojojo we can only hope, but you may as well make peace with it, Johnny boy will go to the world cup.

  • Paul - 2011-08-16 12:51

    Still testing combinations??????????????????

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-08-16 14:06

Right you are, Paul. Coach knows what he has in The Beast, so rest him and give Guthro a go. Also, Gio is good but who knows, maybe Lambie is better, so give him a go. I know some may differ but for me Butch answered all the questions and did note give away any yellow cards as many ( myself included ) thought he might, so why not give Morne some game time and a chance to regain some confidence. Personally, I think Danie is and will always be a lock - at a push and when times are tough he can be used as cover for a loosie. Alberts may just impress us all, 7 is where he has most impact. Good luck lads!

  • @kevDD - 2011-08-16 12:52

Habana should have been dropped and Mvovo put in his place.

      Makutu - 2011-08-16 13:03

Agreed! And Danie Russouw and John Smit should be dropped completely. Jean Deysel and Chilliboy Ralepelle would be much better!

      ZotBot - 2011-08-16 13:08

      Agree with Makutu

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-16 13:08

Sorry, with Mvovo's defensiveness weakness, I prefer Habana. He shoots off the line every now and again, but is a far better defender than Mvovo.

      Hanjo - 2011-08-16 13:13

What??? Habana was our best backline player behind perhaps only Jaques Fourie?? and by far the best winger on the pitch on the day...he will start come WC time, so please just make peace with it. I can't believe people actually felt he had a bad game...what the ....

      Marx - 2011-08-16 13:25

Habana did look better on sat. If he gets better ball he will prove everyone wrong. Deysel never featured against the Aussies, Danie is by far our best option from the bench.

      Sarge - 2011-08-16 13:27

After his last three games I think Danie Rossouw should be shipped to mars. I just hope he reclaims his passion for this game before he costs us another one. Habana wasn't to bad on the weekend, I just think he needs to get that "one" try to get rid of the pressure hanging over his shoulders. He is just trying a bit to hard. He needs to go back to the basics.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-16 13:37

Why all the thumbs down chaps? Did you folk NOT witness the defensive massacre of Basson and Mvovo down under a few weeks back? Habana is a GEM in comparison. Mvovo great attacking wing - but the biggest liability on the park defensively. How many defensive liabilities can ONE team carry chaps?

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-16 14:02

@SAFFA and Hanjo - I agree. Habana looked hungry, and was much better this weekend. He should keep the defensive line, or he is going to be caught out of position again. Danie is effective as an impact player, and I prefer him to Deysel.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-16 14:24

@GraemeBB and Hanjo - Danie should be used as lock cover only (unless there is a loosie emergency on the heavy, wet tracks in NZ - and even then, only at cover for 8) IMHO. Johnson is not an option. I would also have played Juan de Jongh at 12 in lieu of Jean this week. But: I would like to see fat Frans Steyn play 12 when his thigh heals - if it does. His distribution has improved at Racing Metro, and his body weight/size/defence makes him an ideal inside centre........too slow for fullback I reckon? Then Lambie or Aplon can play 15 (although Aplon isn't allowed to play his natural game, which negates ALLLLL the incredible counter attacking skills he has-I would still love to see him take the field at some stage in NZ though) My big concerns are: (*and please rugby gods don't do this to me*) What if Matfield and Jannie Dup are injured? We have very very very little cover - eish.

      MaestroX - 2011-08-16 14:26

Mvovo great on attack, but turn him around and his turning circle and change in direction is as quick as an oil tanker. Big guys just aren't able to turn and get back to help the full back. Marx, dude are you watching the game through your Blue Bulls glasses again, Dannie Russouw is the worst flank in the world, please man, he is a good lock at best, all he does is run at the opposition, has never passed a ball in his life and drops or loses the ball in possession every now and then, please man. How PDV and the likes of you still think he deserves his spot just boggles my mind. We need loose forwards that can actually play the ball, fetch and pass BEFORE contact on just after contact. Too many of our choices are useless great big lumbering battering rams that just eventually lose the ball in contact or give away a penalty. Rugby is not a game of, "hey I'm going to moer over you" it’s all about scoring tries and winning. Playing clever thinking mans rugby, using your skills to beat an opponent, not your bonehead muscles to try and run over him!! Where are the likes of Bobby Skinstad? The only loose forward that has any genuine skills at the moment that I can see is Koster and he needs more experience, but please man, enough of the Danie Russouw, Deysel, etc etc oversized steroid induced 0 - 20 meters in 1 month forwards!!!!!!

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-16 14:48

@SAFFA - Frans' condition bothers me. At this stage I would be prepared to make that move, and see if he can force a gap in the defense. JDV is a dissapointment. Watch him play the best game this weekend :-) Furthermore, Danie is out of sorts. He only performed for the Bulls when used as impact player. All the games he started, he was average at most. BUT, I dont think that the scrum was a problem until Smit went to prop. The concerns I have was our attack, goal kicking and here and there a lapse in our defense. Furthermore, I think (hope) we can do it!

      Marx - 2011-08-16 15:13

GraemeBB, I agree with you on Danie, he never really impressed when starting, but from the bench he does make a difference. With Johnson playing he will probably replace Bakkies which is the right thing. What we should all realise before being too hard on players is that this is their second run, with 5 changes, which is not the best thing but hopefully we will get some continuity is certain positions. This side needs more game time, that's my biggest worry!

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-16 15:21

@Marx - that is why the first two tests was such a waste. I thought the Tri-Nations would be the perfect platform to tweek the team, but now we are in a do or die situation. But, good luck to the Boks. I hope they perform well this weekend. I am tired of people spitting fire every week.

  • Mark - 2011-08-16 12:52

    Uuurm....All Blacks not Australia Sport24

      Green Oaks - 2011-08-16 13:06

      Airborne68 - 2011-08-16 13:43

Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand Matfield's milestones. 107 Cap or 111 caps?

      Big Al - 2011-08-16 14:49

@Airborne68. I am confused too. Maybe he played 4 games at scrum-half or hooker or wing or something................................... Just can't remember.

      steam_engine - 2011-08-16 16:15

@ Airborne68, me too i'm a bit confused. Aren't they including the caps of represantatives games? But even if so, the last time i checked only 3 bokkes reached 100 caps( Montgomery. Smit & Victor)

  • Gomez - 2011-08-16 12:52

I like the look of this team. When one falls of the horse one must get back up straight away!Come on Bokke!I know you can!

  • karlkat - 2011-08-16 12:52

I think to date this is the best team we can field. Now it is just a matter of getting their game plan working and the "hunger" to defend their world title

  • Dal2000 - 2011-08-16 12:54

Sport 24...You need to hire some new editors.

  • Anneleen - 2011-08-16 12:54

Welcome Johnson and Lambie...and congratulations to Matfield for his 107th Test...go BOKKKEEE!!!!!

  • Petie - 2011-08-16 12:54

Morne Steyn?!?! Now the backs will only cross the advantage line when he puts in an up and under...

      ryan.a.riley - 2011-08-16 13:03

yup..and there goes all our possession...

      Marx - 2011-08-16 13:33

Since you have a problem with Steyn, how many tries did the backs score after "crossing the advantage line" last sat?

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-16 14:00

Petie does not know the answer Marx :)

      terry - 2011-08-16 14:05

Not to mention the huge hole on defence between 9 and 12!

  • Chief Kok - 2011-08-16 12:55

Uummm!!! They actual play the All Blacks, not Aussies. No Aplon, no De Jongh??? gonna cost them. Aplon to counter the pace of Jane and Dagg. De Jongh should have started on 12. De Villiers has a bad track record against SBW. De jongh also brings fire to midfield. Why 2 props on the bench? Dark days for Boks. All Blacks by at least 10.

      Hanjo - 2011-08-16 13:10

2 props on the bench because neither Jannie or Gurthro will last 80min? thought this was general knowledge?

      Freddie - 2011-08-16 13:18

No De Jongh... yay. No Aplon... YIPPEEEE. Now we just need to lose Habana and Morne and we have the makings of a backline, Good to see Bismarck getting a start.

      Navyseal - 2011-08-16 13:27

I cannot agree more No Aplon, No De Jongh, only hasbeens. Habana, De Villiers should be dropped. I thnk it is going to be 20 point difference. This is an Old team with little stamina left to last the 80 min as was evident last week

      Drewka - 2011-08-16 13:33

Don't know KOK, Aplon and De Jongh are good runners, but not solid on defence. Morne is not my favourite, but he needs some game time before the WC. Gurthro the worrying factor! But it’s a good side overall. Good to see Lambie in at fullback.

      Bulldozer - 2011-08-16 13:35

Kok, I sincerely apologize for the comment I made the other day.

      Chief Kok - 2011-08-16 13:44

      @Bulldozer: apology accepted.

      Bulldozer - 2011-08-16 13:56

      Thank you.

      michaelx - 2011-08-16 14:08

      MaestroX - 2011-08-16 14:35

Kok, I think you are a twat for supporting the AB, but I have to agree with your comments below. JDV not playing well at the moment and I would have had Lambie at 10 and Aplon at 15. Steyn going to kick his stupid U&U most times we get possession which will only be 30% of the time, Dannie “I am so slow”, will lose the other 10%. All the other Boks going to have to step it up big time. We will play better this weekend but I still think we will probably lose. However I still feel we have a good balance of players that could win the WC, just depends on who snor and the selectors choose. If we choose the right combos we have an fantastic team.

      jk - 2011-08-16 14:42

kokki& dozer- please stop sucking each others knobs...

      Riaan - 2011-08-16 14:53

@Navyseal.... no de Villiers nor de Jongh??? Who do you want to play inside centre then??? Olivier?????????

      kurtvs - 2011-08-16 15:07

How do you go from being second choice fullback first choice get injured and second choice fall from match 22 completely. FFS and then they wonder why we support the all blacks.

      Leon Janse van Rensburg - 2011-08-17 10:34

You're definately right about SBW having Jean dV's number. I think he is scared of him and think Jean De Jongh has no fear when he tackles so he definately would of been the better choice.

  • Capso - 2011-08-16 12:57

Australia TBA WTF???? Who wrote this article, Pieter de Villiers?

Morne Steyn at 10! OMG! Another asswipping on the way for the Boks!!

      Kevin - 2011-08-16 15:54

Div is determined that the all blacks must win. He thinks it's AA. That why he is letting Steyn play.

  • David - 2011-08-16 13:00

I am more interested in the game plan we produce on the weekend than the players starting - that said I have no real gripes about the team. Would have started with Beast, though, and Lamby (sic) at 10

      Tools1 - 2011-08-16 13:14

Lambie is a full back through and through let him develop there groom him for that # 10 spot next year it will be his. For the world cup we need Butchie to fire on all celinders.

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-08-16 13:01

    Ja, well, no, fine!!!!!!!! WTF!

  • Dewald_P - 2011-08-16 13:01

So if this is to be believed then Victor is playing his 218th game, since Victor Matfield will captain the team for a 16th time in his record 107th Test appearance for the Springboks. Victor Matfield makes 111th appearance in the Springbok jersey to equal the record of Joost van der Westhuizen. And Joost never played 100 tests... So whoever wrote this garbage should get fired.... I'm surprised that it doesn't mention Mannetjies Roux making his debut this weekend...

      Tessa - 2011-08-16 13:30

Some tour games the Boks play are not Test Matches, but count as appearances in a Bok Jersey

  • - 2011-08-16 13:01

With the exception of S Burger and J Smith's exclusion, this looks like the strongest Bok team. It's a pity that Ruan Pienaar is not in the same form he was in 2007, because that really gives you the license have an "extra" back on the bench since he would cover fly-half, scrum-half and full-back. Then you could afford to have a guy like Gio Aplon or Juan de Jogh on the bench.

      Sarge - 2011-08-16 13:09

That's what Hougaard's for. Just wish he could get a start though, he is one of the most explosive players we have. - 2011-08-16 14:12

But Sarge Hougaard does not cover fly-half, hence, his buddy Butch is sitting next to him. If Ruan was anywhere near his 2007 form, he'd take the place of both Butch and Hougaard on the bench and we could afford to have another back like a center or a wing on the bench.

  • Porra - 2011-08-16 13:02

Maybe the best balanced side we had. One problem - Morne Steyn. Only change we need to make in the second half.

  • Sharkie4ever - 2011-08-16 13:04

A bit thin on replacement backs off the bench!

  • Freddie - 2011-08-16 13:05

A milestone I would like to see is a Bok win. Extending pathetic records in a losing cause is immaterial.

  • GSXA - 2011-08-16 13:06

Morne Steyn at flyhalf, what a joke. He could not get us over the advantage line last weekend after he came on. Hougaard should replace Du Preez as well, as he just stands around and bitches at the ref and forgets to clear the ball at times.

  • David Van Huffel - 2011-08-16 13:07

    NZ by 10+

  • StaalBurgher - 2011-08-16 13:07

Why oh why do they drop Jean Deysel?

      Lance - 2011-08-16 16:37

The reason Deysel got dropped is a player called "Mr Alberts'...I have no problem forgiving the selectors for their decision. Alberts raw power next to Spies and Brussouw should be as exciting as watching a Monster truck show...

  • Ozman - 2011-08-16 13:09

    SA on the slide......AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

  • Sharkbite - 2011-08-16 13:10

Well now SBW will run right through us, and our potent back line won't get the opportunity to run with the ball. Morne Steyn does not deserve a starting spot, he had a horrible tour and frankly we looked really good with Butch on the field last week. But otherwise a good team.

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-16 16:08

I still dont know what Butch did besides tackle a bit and pass. I didnt see any advantages. I still would play Steyn and Lambie.

      Sharkbite - 2011-08-17 14:31

Graeme, Butch tackles like a demon, no-one can get past him, which is not something we can say for Morne Steyn.

  • Richard - 2011-08-16 13:12

Sorry, your facts are wrong. Joost did not play 111 games. As far as I know it was Percy.

      jochem - 2011-08-16 14:08

He means 111 games in the Springbok jersey, including Tests and tour games. Percy played 101 Tests.

  • Pictureof - 2011-08-16 13:15

    Goooo Springkuks !!!

  • tshepo.theman - 2011-08-16 13:18

i resisted not commenting yesterday on the pathetic performance against australia as difficult as that was.... and thank the lord john smit is not starting.... john smit and bryan habana lost us the game... these two players should b\not be in the team,,,, i would drop habana for francois hougaard on the wing.... i think francois is a faster wing, a better tackler and a better play maker.... john smit must just stay the hell away from this team period.... his captaincy is overrated infact i'll go as far to call him a $h1t captain now there you go..... go bokke i support you 100% wihout habana and smit

  • Isikhulu - 2011-08-16 13:19

All Blacks (B side) 18 Springboks (A side) 9 with a yellow card.

      kurtvs - 2011-08-16 15:52

More like all black B side 29 Protea bokkies 3

  • Raggafan - 2011-08-16 13:26

Trying combinations....................sorry to late, Morne Steyn.............the Clydsdale horse, no vision, to deep, to slow, only a boot........So no use of having a backline: Score AB 42 Sa 12 (2 x dropgoals, 3 x Penalties)

      Anneck - 2011-08-16 13:34

That's if we are luckier enough to have any penalties go our way! Remember in most cases we are playing against the referee as well.

      Isikhulu - 2011-08-16 15:31

      2 x drop goals (2 x 3points) + 3 x penalties (3 x 3points) = 15 points

  • Anneck - 2011-08-16 13:28

Attributes of a pathetic coach: can't decide on flyhalf! Pick a flyhalf and stick with him!

  • Marcell - 2011-08-16 13:31

Milestone: All Blacks 32 Springosse 17

      Dros - 2011-08-17 13:05

      All Balls 12 Springbokke 25

  • susan.alberts - 2011-08-16 13:32

Good team, good combination with Steyn and Du Preez

  • Siyabulela - 2011-08-16 13:32

i think that the backline is weak!!! Morne Steyn doesnt do it for me. he should be in the bench and bring in the BUTCHER at flyhalf.. the best backline the bokke can hav at the world cup is the team that started last week.. and with Hougaard, Lambie and de Jongh as reserves.. these reserves will bring in a lot for the squad

  • Rboy - 2011-08-16 13:35

Na Die HAKA, KAK die Bokke !!!!

  • - 2011-08-16 13:35

I question the selection of this team as our best team. I am not against any team but the question should be asked....How the ....did the Bulls desirve to get 6 players in the starting line up and 3 on the bench? As a team they played crapt this year or will individuals shine when playing with 3 Stormers and 5 Sharks? I will be the first one to eat humble pie on Monday if this team wins on Saturday (I hope so) Lets be honest most of these players played their worst rugby ever during 2011. Is it possible for Snorre to perform a miricle? Again I hope so.....but come Monday we again will swear and use faul language to PdV and the rest of the coaching team.

  • Uncle - 2011-08-16 13:35

The Beast should have been No 10. He can cross the advantage line and will certainly not kick possession away. LOL

  • Johann - 2011-08-16 13:35

Lambie, Alberts and Bismarck are improvements while Morne for Butch is a step backwards.

      Oukoos - 2011-08-16 16:00

  • Jackman - 2011-08-16 13:38

Makutu, that looks like the squad that our next coach might make when we rebuild the Boks for 2015. I don't agree with all your selections such as where is the Cheetahs S15 scrum half but I like the drift of them

  • Dan - 2011-08-16 13:38

So nice to see consistancy, vision and a plan - ha, ha ,ha - still as confused as yesterday. CJ van der Linde? WTF? I agree Deysel found himself way out of his league, but I still don't understand all the changes again. A third of the team swopped again. Our pivotal position of flyhalf and we now played Steyn, Lambie, Butch in almost as many weeks. Want to tell me after 4 years DIV still doesn't know which No.10 to pick and therefore obviously has no game plan in mind. All three are good enough for specific game plans (given proper coaching), but it is clear we have no game plan.

  • tony.kirby1 - 2011-08-16 13:39

One change they did not make and one that could be very important in the long run was a change to the coaching team.

  • Hannetjie - 2011-08-16 13:42

Better side than last week. I agree that Beast should have been in the starting line-up instead of Gurthro. Also Victor a good choice as captain!!!!!

  • qkvanrensburg - 2011-08-16 13:47

Brian Habana is in the squad for PDV wants to make history through a team that smashes cap records. Habana's days are over and should retire. He should allow space for chaps with passion, defensive skills and ENERGY to take over. Please keep Deon Stegman far away from Springbok rugby and lose John Smit. Bring Conrad Jantjies back and tell our Frenchman to return to France as he has lost the edge. Apart from that, bring Jean de Jong into the fray for 30 mins at a time, Francois Hougard as starting scrumhalf and Pat Lambie at the benched fly-half with Butch as starting fly-half. Morne Steyn should be our supporting full back.

      CharlSkeptic - 2011-08-16 13:58

I just started to like what you said uuntil I got to "Conrad Jantjes". I promptly I tripped over my own laces, tackled one of my own team mates and got dropped for the scheduled Saturday duty. Whatya smokin, heh?

  • jubsa - 2011-08-16 13:52

Steyn is dead on his feet.backline will have eben less attack now.sonny bill will be attacking his channel all day

  • david.haselhof - 2011-08-16 13:53

Morne Steyn stands so far back at fly half that he is in another dialling code... Butch gives so much better go forward momentum

      Facts - 2011-08-16 14:08

I am not a Butch fan but I agree and enjoyed the dialling code comment.

  • Facts - 2011-08-16 13:58

Why still John, Danie and CJ? Hopefully they are only there for their stats and not to play.

  • Straightdeal - 2011-08-16 14:00

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we're gonna get thumped big time!! 30 pts diff minimum. This side has no energy, no imagination.

  • HueyPNewton - 2011-08-16 14:01

John Smit, Butch James, Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Danie Rossouw and Jean de Villiers are all white quotas. They shouldn't be anywhere near the team. Anyway this is a rubbish team. Where is Beast, Aplon, de Jongh, Mvovo?? They are all better than the palookas playing in their places. Excellent black players are still being kept out of the team. Go All Blacks!!

      Sharkbite - 2011-08-16 14:14

Quick question - you know Guthro is playing in Beast's place and Habana is playing in Mvovo's place right?? How exactly are they white quotas? And I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Aplon is too small and was found wanting again on Saturday, and Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie as a team is in my mind the best center combination in the world. I agree that Chilliboy should replace John on the bench, but that's based on merit and not skin colour.

      HueyPNewton - 2011-08-16 14:30

@Sharkbite. The point is if those guys were black they would never make it into the Bok team. JdV/JF "best centre combination in the world"?? YOU BE HAVING IT!!!!!!! 3 years ago?? Maybe, just maybe. Today?? Not a chance. JdV is not even half the player he was back then.

      Sharkbite - 2011-08-16 15:30

I agree with you that he isn't the player he used to be, but as a combination they are very very good! I agree with you that Juan is the man of the future, he is amazing! But then I also have to agree with you that Morne, Danie and Ruan shouldn't be allowed to wear the green and gold. Smit is allowed to because he is a fantastic captain (that's the only reason he is still there), and I rate Butch, he's very very strong on defense and better than Morne on attack. But then we come to the deeper issue - the team that played last weekend had 11 players from the 2007 RWC final, and two of the players who didn't play in the final but played last weekend only didn't play in the final because they were injured. There has been zero growth from then to now. It has nothing to do with the colour of their skin, it has to do with the coaching staff who are too scared to try something new because they don't know how. That's why I get angry when people bring race into it - they are not there because they're white, they are there (just like Habana) because once upon a time they were the best in SA, and PdV is too scared to move away from that.

  • Benetti - 2011-08-16 14:08

Boks are all good footballers but are poorly coached. They are playing the same game for the past years and are totally predictable. They insist on having tight five in the back line on attack who occupy the running space of the speedsters and frequently commit handling errors or slow down the attack by dying with the ball. Clear the line and use our pace like the All Blacks do. Their relentless running attack will destroy our defense which is frequently too high, around the torso and shoulders instead of the hips and legs. The tight five belongs at the breakdown with the loose forwards operating behind the back line to sweep the loose ball & thwart the intercept. Watch the All Blacks and learn! Pass teh ball at hip height, 1/2 meter ahead of teh player and not at his hands. Do not kick away possession - no ball no score! No errors in our half - Carter will collect every 3 points every time. We have the power & skill but need to fix the above or suffer further humiliation. Finally - change teh coach - he is not the man for the job, as teh record shows. The Captain must fix loosing patterns on the field. He is not there solely as a motivator. Boks are pros and are paid to be motivated. Please send this to teh coach & team before the weekend. Thanks.
