Div takes a swipe at WP

Johannesburg – “It is a pity if coaches that could have served their country are not allowed to do it. What makes it worse is that we may now have to look to a foreigner to do the job.”

That was the reaction from Springbok coach Peter de Villiers to the news that Stormers and Western Province defence coach Jacques Nienaber will not be released to the Springboks by the union.

Nienaber returned to Cape Town after assisting at the Bok training camp this week.

De Villiers also suggested that Nienaber would not be approached for help again while he coached the Boks.

“It’s a pity that something like this had to happen. He had an opportunity to use his knowledge to the benefit of the country, but is not being allowed to do it. It was his big chance to make a contribution at the highest level and it has now been lost,” said De Villiers.

“It also means that I will now have to look for someone overseas to do a job that a South African could have done.”

Nienaber was called upon after the Springboks struggled with their defence on the away leg of the Tri-Nations and conceded 10 tries in three Tests.

De Villiers admitted that he needed help. “We will always use experts. I believe WP and the Blue Bulls’ defence coaches are world class and Gary Gold (Bok defence coach) is not far behind. We did not defend well overseas, but only need to make small changes.”

He admitted that the team was caught between two playing patterns. “Previously the largest part of the squad consisted of Bulls and Sharks players. Their game plan and playing pattern did not differ significantly.

“This year it’s between the Bulls and Stormers and there is a significant difference. The players did not adapt well enough.”

De Villiers laughed when it was suggested that he could solve the problem by picking less Stormers.

On a more serious note, he summed up the All Blacks as follows: “Very good.”

De Villiers will name his team for the August 21 clash against the All Blacks at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

  • @SNOR - 2010-08-12 23:08

Snor, why don't u just shut up. You have yr management team, Gold is just as good as Nienaber (according to u anyway), so why are u throwing yr toys out of the cot. If u say that Nienaber won't be part of the Bok set-up while u r coach, then he won't have long to wait. U are an arrogant, self centered, "God given Talent", who is seeing his a**...

  • Ted - 2010-08-12 23:15

All jokes aside, I understand why the Kiwis and Aussies made the comments they did about him. Not only does he need a defence coach but also a PR Manager who filters his comments. Please don't tell us, the public, that you honestly think he will never have this opportunity again simply because WP Rugby did not capitulate to your ill-timed public campaign to surrender one of their contracted managers, and that your sanctimonious reference to overseas coaches as the only other recourse you now have is all WP Rugby's fault. I am sure you will find that the Bulls or Sharks or Griquas have a good defensive coach you can commandeer mid season and that they will be more than willing to freely give him up sinc eall their supporters have lambasted WP for not doing so, thus surely their own unions won't do the same thing, right? Please stop talking to the press and spend the extra time focusing on your coaching task. You do neither particularly well so try to do less of the one and more of the other.

  • Square peg, round hole - 2010-08-12 23:28

Gary Gold was employed during Jake White's reign, our defence was the best in the world. How can it go from world class to needing someone from the outside to figure out what the hell is going on? There is obviously a drawing board to go back to...

  • lv - 2010-08-13 00:31

Either way, Allistar Coetzee is in elk geval 'n beter afrigter as jy!! Hy sien ou badprop january hoort nie in 'n span nie!!

  • @WeePee - 2010-08-13 00:33

Time you boys got with the programme...

  • DvD - 2010-08-13 00:54

Div expects to win without the best scrumhalf, fullback, hooker, wing etc., what should be the problem with not using the best defensive coach then?

  • Conrad - 2010-08-13 00:57

Well done Province, keep the secret safe.

  • Egbert - 2010-08-13 01:16

If this is his attitude when he does not get what he wants, I pity those who must work with him. He seems to be very spitefull in his comments, something I dont think belongs with an international coach. If he knows what is wrong and he knows it is only small changes that is needed, why the big fuss? In any case like Rob says defence = commitment/attitude, which is not something you teach in 10 days, like Nienaber shows after three years with WP.

  • Ed - 2010-08-13 01:26

Ja - Nee...I am now coming to a realisation that Div is trying to blame his incompetence on other people not willing to assist him because he has absolutely no idea anymore what to do to get the Bok’s back on track. The well disciplined team he took over from "White" is no longer there and you can see the cracks appearing fast. Div has and will never be a good coach.

  • OMG here we go again! - 2010-08-13 01:37

When is this clown going to learn? When is SARU going to learn for that matter!? He speaks utterly bullsh$t! Now he victimise Nienaber by saying he will never approach him again but also admits that he is the best. Ego problem AGAIN ou Snorre? Why look overseas mate? You also said that the Stormers AND BB defensive coaches are so good so approach the BB defensive coach then! Snorre is such an idiot he will now most properly drop a few WP players to “proof a point”. Sounds very ANC style! Again Snor DID NOT follow procedures when he approached Nienaber. He should have gone to Rassie and discussed it with him but no his ego is too big....small little dwarf! So why don’t you put more fkn BB dummies and Sharks in your group...maybe they will “adapt” to your k@k style and JSmit can stay on as captain aswell.Sounds like useless McIntosh influence. Snor is too stupid to drop idiots like Smit, Chilliboy and no-skills poefter Spies. You are making the jersey cheap mate, not other coaches and “unwilling” players like Frans Steyn. Handing out Bok jerseys to Rose, Chilli,Maku,Basson, Johnson to mention a few now THATS making Bok jerseys “cheap”! Can’t some or other rich guy give this idiot a few million and tell him to go play with himself?

  • John - 2010-08-13 02:03

Why do we even have to read this sort of crap from that self-centred ignorant idiot!

  • Koos - 2010-08-13 02:11

Finally some good news!!! Less Stormer's in the Bok setup, now we need to get rid of the hyped up players like de Jong, Mapu and Mvovo will be much better choice.

  • DJ - 2010-08-13 02:59

DIV - stop shunting responsibility - YOU are the coach. Do your job!!

  • scorpion - 2010-08-13 03:10

wp are shyte in any case!3 titles in 21 years(one shared) makes you understand their desperation!

  • wolf - 2010-08-13 03:36

PDiv must just understand that Nienaber is contracted by Western Province. If you want him to serve his country why didnt you contract him in the first place. Just shows you a Province can contract better coaches than a country. Why dont you get a rugby league defensive coach??

  • LeonC - 2010-08-13 03:41

It is a pity if coaches that could have served their country are not allowed to do it.............. Yes we know but isn't it how he got the job in the first place.

  • Martin - 2010-08-13 04:33

  • Anonymous - 2010-08-13 04:42

Whoa! I think everyone is missing the implications of what Divvy just said.... "we may now have to look to a foreigner to do the job". And pray what job exactly would that be? Is it time for Gary Gold to polish up his cv?

  • WP Supporter - 2010-08-13 05:05

Now I have had it!! Who does this idiot think he is? Halfway through an international rugby season he realises that his team cannot defend! News flash you idiot!! How can you expect a team to defend well if you choose players out of position and hardly choose the best players for the positions. Now you expect others to come and assist to their own detriment!! And why always from Province? First Gert Small then Gary Gold. The other day there were rumours that you were not happy with Gold and Matt Proudfoot would be a better forwards coach!! What next?? Brendan Canon had it 100% correct!! You are a clown!!

  • Claude - 2010-08-13 05:11

Its a pity Snor 'verbally' throes his toys out of the cot when things go badly for him or he does not get has way. However he is a World Champion at the art of embarrassing his country. The only person he is incapable of embarrassing is himself!

  • Angel - 2010-08-13 05:43

  • Jack Mare - 2010-08-13 05:46

If that is the case, then why did SA Rugby not appoint Heyneke Meyer and Gert Smal as the coach in the first place, so that Heyneke and Gert, who was by far the best candidate for the job, serve his country? Diff, you are an affirmative action coach finish and klaar. The best coach was not allowed to serve his country cause of you in the first place. And I am not a Blue Bull supporter but a realist. Div, don't underestimate the SA Rugby Supporters intelligence!!

  • Paul - 2010-08-13 05:53

What did we do to deserve Helium? So the Boks defence coach (Gold) is only third best? Madness.

  • fred - 2010-08-13 05:59

And what if Nienaber can also bring no change. Where to then snorre? You can't just keep running around accusing other people if you can't do the job the first time. And why accuse WP if they don't want to release their coaches. How will for instance the Blue Bull or Sharks supporters feel when their coaches are taken away and they suddenly start to play worse.

  • Koos Kaap - 2010-08-13 06:29

  • WP man - 2010-08-13 06:33

'n Wit skrumskakel was nie goed genoeg vir de V nie - die useless Januarie se kleur is mos reg. Maar nou hy in die moeilikheid is, is 'n wit verdediging afrigter goed genoeg.

  • Jan Bantjies - 2010-08-13 06:35

Devil ears.....Are you incapacitated? Just ask him what he`s (Jaques Nienaber) doing and do it yourself!

  • sean - 2010-08-13 06:37

How many coaches does this idiot want? He is an arrogant ass#$%le. For the 100th time, they must get rid of this idiot!!!!!!!

  • Mike@CapeT - 2010-08-13 06:44

What is a pity, through his own stupidity and stubbornness, Div has landed himself and the Springbok name in the dwang and now he expects Province to bale him out!

  • Michael - 2010-08-13 06:52

Please old Smor, go see a vet today, you have foot in mouth desease

  • Camel Man - 2010-08-13 06:57

Pieter, maybe they, like the rest of us, knows what a tosser you are. It wont be long before Alistair Coetzee is appointed the new Bok coach. He will then bring his team of experts. Hope its not too long before that happens.

  • spectre - 2010-08-13 07:03

heres a thought, why don't you giving the defensive coaching a shot, or attacking, or strategic, or...

  • Ruan - 2010-08-13 07:03

Finally he PDivvy realised that he is incompetent to do the job himself. If he was a world class coach he wouldn't have needed anyone else or he wouldve chosen the right defence coach when he was hired. He does not know what he is doing. Now he acts like there is no other choice but to get a foreigner... SERIOUSLY!! There are hundreds of good defensive coaches in SA all way more qualified than the "clown" will ever be!! Please sack this piece of &*(%#$!!!

  • Vaughn - 2010-08-13 07:10

Hey Div...?! If you can't do the job, get out, leave the "spinning" to the politicians. And by the way; if you concede 10 tries, it meens that you have to get at least 11 tries or more to win....basic maths, thus defence will not solve the problem. How did you do in maths at school....? Just asking....Sooooooo : GO BOKKE (we keep on hoping..)

  • Tiger - 2010-08-13 07:10

Iech, this man goes on and on. He got a defense coach but want to save his own and assistants ashes because they cant coach and now need others to do so for them. Leave the best where they are and do your own sh&*&^ie work or get another job

  • FJ - 2010-08-13 07:10

PdV, moenie kla nie. Erken daar is beter afrigters as jy en as jy regtig in belang van SA Rugby wil optree, gee iemand beter as jy die kans om die Bokke na 'n wenkultuur te laat terugkeer!!!!!!!

  • 06 - 2010-08-13 07:15

I side with Snor. And where is Saru? Why don't they stand up and say yes or no! how can a union have the last say.

  • goose - 2010-08-13 07:18

PDV- have you ever thought about the possibility that N realised after a day or two that he would not fit into a role in a circus????? Why look overseas if, as you stated, there are other world class defence coaches around? I agree with Rob..... attitude....attitude....attitude

  • Garreth - 2010-08-13 07:24

Im sure that if you Mr P Div had approached Nienaber before the currie cup season or right at the beginning it would be a different story. you cant just expect people to drop everything and run when you call. what if you wanted one of the provinces head coaches in the middle of a season they must just pack and leave their team hanging. sorry. doesnt work that way. at least he gave this week to help. the team (including management) just has to listen to him. a defence coach will be able to point out your problem and tell you how to fix it. its up to you whether or not you listen to that advise. and personally. i think you are to thick headed to listen to any advice. but just think. you now have something else to blame a loss on other then yourself

  • Paul - 2010-08-13 07:25

Dear Div: Its a pity our national coach is unable to identify competent assistant coaches in the first place. You would not recognise a good backline coach if one bit you in the bum.

  • Angela - 2010-08-13 07:26

Devilliers goes from bad to worse, how he ever got the job as coach is beyond me. All it shows is that he does not know what he is doing.

  • B@ldragger - 2010-08-13 07:26

The real pity is that someone as incappable as Snorre is allowed to "serve" the country and in the process destroy a brand built through many years of blood and sweat.

  • Paul - 2010-08-13 07:28

Dear Div: Its a pity our national coach is unable to identify competent assistant coaches in the first place. You would not recognise a good backline coach if one bit you in the bum.

  • Bigguy - 2010-08-13 07:29

For the benefit of the country why doesnt Div step down ....who would want to work with Snor

  • ran - 2010-08-13 07:32

  • PIERRE - 2010-08-13 07:35

Clowning around again??? U appointed Gold, live with it. Don't blame somebody else for your inefficiencies.

  • Kevin - 2010-08-13 07:36

If Nienaber is so good, why was he not part of the team setup from the beginning. Too little to late?

  • Vossie - 2010-08-13 07:38

Eish ! Doesnt Div realise that there is a deeper seated problem in the squad and not just the defense, by his own admission Gold is good so why now the childish reaction in a statement that as long as he is coach Nienaber wont be assisting the boks. How many assitants does he want to have , pity we as the paying public will never know the extend to which he contributes to the day to day coaching. Just asking ?
