Div makes 'tough decisions'

2010-08-24 15:01

Cape Town - Springbok coach Peter de Villiers says he had to make some tough choices when selecting the starting XV to face the Wallabies in a Vodacom Tri-Nations clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

WIN: Springboks v Wallabies tickets

The starting line-up shows two changes from the one that went down 22-29 against the All Blacks last week with Frans Steyn starting at fullback in place of Gio Aplon and Jaque Fourie returning to replace Juan de Jongh.

De Jongh moves to the bench, in place of Wynand Olivier, whilst Aplon falls out of the match 22.

“How do you tell a guy who has played well that he is not part of the team, or is on the bench?” De Villiers lamented at a press conference in Pretoria on Monday.

“But that is part and parcel on my job as coach that sometimes I must make unpopular decisions. The reality is that there are only 15 places in the starting line-up and I have to do what I believe is best for the team.

“Juan (de Jongh) will be a great one day but Jaque Fourie is one already. He has played 60 Tests and, with the exception of his yellow card in Brisbane, has done well for us all season,” De Villiers said.

“Gio did not do anything wrong but we have an opportunity to see Frans play. He also offers us another kicking option which will take some pressure off Morné Steyn.”

Frans Steyn last played a Test against Wales in Cardiff on 5 June and rejoined the squad this week after being unavailable for the All Blacks Test. Fourie, meanwhile, returns from a four-week suspension after he was yellow-carded in the opening minutes of the previous clash with the Wallabies in Brisbane last month.

Juan Smith, who was the only injury concern after the All Blacks game, has been cleared and is included in the run-on XV.

There is one change among the reserves with Ryan Kankowski, who joined the squad on Monday, preferred as loose forward cover ahead of Francois Louw. Kankowski looked sharp for the Sharks in their win over Western Province in the Currie Cup last weekend and his speed could be a factor if he is used from the bench at the weekend.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Aplon, Olivier and Louw will be released to the provinces and will be available for Currie Cup selection at the weekend.

Daar gaan ou diffie weer met habana. Hy sal ook nooit leer nie. In daai geval...GO AUSTRALIA !!!!

  • Megabull - 2010-08-24 15:07

My pick is still much better

  • Cape Shark - 2010-08-24 15:15

Januarie continues to be picked on the bench and Francois Louw out of the squad completely??? Pocock must be watering at the mouth with no fetcher anywhere to be seen!!! I give up!!

  • IZ IT - 2010-08-24 15:18

  • Rhorhwesikhuni - 2010-08-24 15:21

The team looks good on paper, perhaps the selectors could have kept Gio Aplon as cover for the tired Habana.

  • HPD - 2010-08-24 15:21

It shouldn't be such tough decisions if you drop the players that are out of form. What did JP and Habana do to remain in the team? What is Spies and Smit still doing there? The only thing PDV is doing is causing division within the team and making a fool once again of himself.

  • obviously - 2010-08-24 15:23

he's playing for his job over the next two tests, and has thus gone back to jakes team!!! clever boy div!

  • Fleckie - 2010-08-24 15:25

NO BALLS from puppet boy. Drop Spies and rest Victor, we have nothing to gain by playing him over and over. Morne is looking so average these days its scary. Habana also needs to be given a break aqnd a wake up call. Get Bismark back on the bench and Beast also needs a look at. Vermuelen needs a chance instead of Spies

  • Jamblikke - 2010-08-24 15:26

  • GT - 2010-08-24 15:26

OH for Petes SAKE! Tough decisions are around SMIT, Januarie & SPIES. Why drop 3 of you better players? It is an insult to our intelligence and his own team. John, please boet, just tell PdV that you are happy on the bench

  • Gruntfuttock of Africa - 2010-08-24 15:27

Div has never made a tough decision, nor a right one. When I first saw this headline, I prayed it WAS he (Div) who was left out. This poor team selection cries for the match to be played in camera.

  • Deon - 2010-08-24 15:29

Number one, he forgot to drop John smit! Put bismark or Tiaan there!,2ndly i will play matfield for one last game , let him have his glory of 100 games! After that play him till beker is fit! Then drop him. Louw needs to be there, Brusow when fit then i would rather play burger, duanne or kankowfski at 8 drop spies to the bench,he will be better of as a impackt player! Drop Morne, i will choos butch there or even lambie! What have we got to loose! play jean at 12 but replace him with Juan at halftime! Till he gets his groove back! Fourie at 13 picks himself! 11 Play that Movovo ek like dai donerse man! Then aplon at 14 and steyn at 15 I think that team will be good

  • Aki - 2010-08-24 15:29

Januarie must have a very good muti and sangoma.

  • Dolf - 2010-08-24 15:29

  • FP - 2010-08-24 15:32

Agree with Steyn in place of Aplon. His kicks on Saturday were of the popgun variety. One of which lead to the first try by Woodcock. However, he would have been a better bet than Habana who must be the worst of all the Boks currently. Other than Danie Rossouw I see no impact from this bench either.

  • Lardus - 2010-08-24 15:33

Should have given Habana a rest and used Aplon. Also missed a big one with not playing the Stormer dude, Flo. Tough calls? Those two were easy to bring in those two guys. Touch was keeping Habs in stead of Gio.

  • Arra - 2010-08-24 15:33

Waar is Bismark !!!!!

  • Melt - 2010-08-24 15:34

Waar is hy.

  • Rooiwyn - 2010-08-24 15:35

Get with the program and leave the dead wood out of the Furness!Chilliboy? I ask you, what on earth is the story with both January & Chillyboy? do we first have to get them demoted to club rugby (as what happened to that useless Earl Rose) before Div drops them? And seriously, Habanna? I would still love to see Aplon and vd Heever as wing combination, what on earth can Habanna and JP bring to the backline? These aren't personal vendettas Div, these are realistic observations.

  • dubloki - 2010-08-24 15:35

Thanks Megabull. The name is quite apt.

  • Molefe - 2010-08-24 15:36

Here we go again! Pitersen, de Villers, Habana, Spies, Smit, January, Cj vd Linde and heavens forbid butch James........ Why dont we just bend over right now and let the Ausies do us over right now instead of waiting for the weekend? Ausies by at least 12, watch and see!

  • StBad - 2010-08-24 15:36

It's pretty clear what you should've done PDV... drop Habana and put Aplon back in his preferred position (GA is the new BH!!!) and choose a frikken fetcher...

  • donovan - 2010-08-24 15:36

the only "tough decision" he should be making is when to hand in his letter of resignation,

  • Pietie007 - 2010-08-24 15:37

And again he picks useless Ralepelle, January and Spies! I give up!!! Done watching this crap!!!

  • drew - 2010-08-24 15:37

does the bok management never learn. almost every try scored against the boks in the tri nations, has come after we've kicked up field (often deep). We need to keep the ball in hand. With the rules as they are in favour of the team with the ball at any breakdown situation. And then the hookers . .??

  • Camel Man - 2010-08-24 15:41

I would have put Juan de Jong in place of Pieterse, and relegated him to the bench. Last opportunity for Habana? Go BOKKE!!

  • Chris - 2010-08-24 15:43

Please Div , play Aplon in Habana's place or put Spies on the wing , at least then you can also select Kanko at 8. January and Chilli still in ??????????

  • jakes - 2010-08-24 15:44

Raak asb ontslae van hierdie clown. Drop Smit, Spies, Habana, de villiers en speel Bismarck, Kankowski, Aplon en du Jong. En ja, ek is bull supporter

  • bob - 2010-08-24 15:45

mike... go play in the traffic

  • TP - 2010-08-24 15:46

TOUGH DECISION? THAT IS TO DROP JOHN SMIT SEEING THAT HE WILL NOT RETIRE. AUS r better than AB in winning the second phases and running on to centre J. SMIT...

  • Danie - 2010-08-24 15:47

Go Divvie!

  • Boerseun - 2010-08-24 15:48

@ cape shark flou ou is nie 'n fetcher nie..... Brusouw, Steggies en Botes is true fetchers

  • Whatever - 2010-08-24 15:48

Aplon and Juan were just about the best backline players - well done on another brilliant selection.

  • henk - 2010-08-24 15:49

  • darkchylde - 2010-08-24 15:50

How many games do we have to lose before coach/management is replaced? 4 in a row? 10? 200?

  • Makutu - 2010-08-24 15:51

    1) Beast Mtawarira, 2) Bismack Du Plessis, 3) Jannie Du Plessis, 4) Flip van der merwe, 5) Alister Hargreaves, 6) Franscios Louw, 7) Juan Smith, 8) Schalck Burgher (c), 9) Francios Houggard, 10) Patrick Lambie, 11) Bjorn Basson, 12) Juan de Jong, 13) Jaque Fourie, 14) Gio Aplon, 15) Frans Steyn. Replacements: 16) Lwazi Mvovo, 18) Rory Kockott, 19) Victor Matfield, 20) Ryan Kankwoski, 21) Guthro Steenkamp, 22) Tiaan Liebenberg... That's my best team in SA at the moment.

  • Tony - 2010-08-24 15:54

The BIGGEST problem is that Steyn is still at flyhalf. He is costing us points by kicking away possession and his tacticle kicking leaves much to be desired. Bring in Butch James. In addition, Pierre Spies is not the 8th man we want. He tries to enforce the gap by trying to run through the opposition. The oppostion know exactly what he is up to and shut him down. Hence he is ineffectual. Kankowski on the other hand tries to find the gap by dodging the oppostion and is very succesful in doing it. He has shown this in the matches he has played for the Sharks this year by gaining ground and scoring tries.

  • Leon - 2010-08-24 15:54

Habana and Spies????? No man MUCH rather Aplon than Habana. Div must pick players on form not reputation or name! Pick the players like De Jongh that is eager to play. Just out of interest Aplon was hitting the rucks harder than Spies, a man double his size. I have to admit that I have nothing against Spies or Habana, I actually think they're great role models except that their nor playing they're best rugby. I think resting them will do them good. Last thing J De Villiers very lucky to start, but again P De Viliers choosing players OUT of form. AGAIN not our best team chosen. Lets see if those players mentioned can pull up they're socks and start playing some rugga!!

  • Cheetah - 2010-08-24 15:55

Div jou dom ****, Habana is over played and defnitly not in good form at this stage, Aplon played his small hart out against the All Blacks and every other opportunity he received during the international season, why not choose Aplon at 11 and give Habana the proper break he deserves?? The same aplies to Spies, rather have Schalk at 8 and bring in Louw at 6 or Kankowski at 8.

  • Kuppy - 2010-08-24 15:55

Oh!...please what rubbish, what tough decisions? Ricky Januarie was booed by 90 000 spectators when he came on yet he is on the bench again. Does De Villiers and the powers that be still not get the picture as far as i am concerned the boks deserve to get thrashed. Total stupidity.

  • Go-Gio - 2010-08-24 15:56

Peter WTF dude! You drop Aplon, while he has had an excellent game last week, but Butch is still on the bench and he has done nothing to deserve the selection? Also, get rid of Ricky Marshmallow Januarie on the bench, and you'll have enough space on your bench for deserving players. Don't be daft now...

  • Deon - 2010-08-24 15:56

Nice Squad, Only Ralepele should not be there and Ricky... The other are justified...This team could win us a world cup...Except for the Two mentioned above...Aplon could be great as cover, but Frans is tested and solid. Aplon good but he will be better in time...Same with de Jong, Our bests are Jaque and De Villiers. I think the only other person missing here is: BRUSSOUW!!!!!!!!!! BISHMARK!!!!!!!!!! FOURIE DU PREEZ!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats about it, not a big fan of kankowski, but He isnt bad either...overall a good team. IF DE VILLIERS CHOSE THIS TEAM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRI_NATIONS>>>WE'd all go....WHAT A GREAT TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mike - 2010-08-24 15:56

JdV, Habana are the issue in the starting 15. Also no fetcher on the bench is an issue, Schalk showed last weekend that his only good for 40 minutes. Also would preferr to see a 5/2 split on the bench, replace the entire front row on the 55 minute mark.

  • Tito - 2010-08-24 15:58

The AB's have peaked early no need to panic about the RWC. It would have been good for to test the depth of the squad by dropping(resting) Spies, Habana, Morne & Smit. I like it though.

  • Alan Ingram - 2010-08-24 15:59

The clown had to make some tough decisions? (I ask with tears in my eyes)! He has still got the same old 'has beens' in the team and the same 'over the hill' unless players on the bench. Hiding # 5 here we come!!!

  • Sh@rks Fever - 2010-08-24 16:01

Real pitty about Aplon. He is brilliant. Team looks good except that they should have had the beast and Bismarck on the bench

  • Carls - 2010-08-24 16:01

Janee - Div, leading Aus to victory.
