Div opts for Steyn's boot

2010-08-24 12:58

Cape Town - Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has named Frans Steyn at fullback in his team to face the Wallabies at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

WIN: Springbok v Wallaby tickets

France-based Steyn replaces Gio Aplon, who is dropped from the match 22 despite an impressive first international appearance in the No 15 jersey during a 29-22 loss to New Zealand last weekend.

And Jaque Fourie returns at outside centre after a four-week suspension in place of Juan de Jongh, another good performer against the All Blacks who has the consolation of a place on the substitutes bench.

Wynand Oliver makes way for De Jongh and in a surprise change among the forward replacements number eight Ryan Kankowski comes in for 'fetcher' Francois Louw.

Steyn from Paris club Racing Metro last wore the green and gold two months ago in Cardiff where his fitness came under fire from coach Peter de Villiers after a three-point triumph.

De Villiers subsequently questioned the loyalty of the 2007 World Cup winner to the team and his recall comes after intense media pressure as the Springboks continue the search for a first-choice fullback.

After Wales, Zane Kirchner from Super 14 champion Bulls was elevated and made six appearances before an injury ruled him out of the All Blacks showdown at the FNB Stadium.

The pro-Steyn media lobby believe the booming boot of the former Sharks star and ability to kick penalties from extraordinary distances make him indispensible and a 'must' for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

A major criticism of the Boks in four consecutive Tri-Nations losses this season has been the lack of a 'fetcher' similar to long-term injury victim Heinrich Brussouw, who excelled in the championship last year.

Louw comes closest to filling the role and now he gives way to Kankowski, a number eight who did not impress in a 30-13 away defeat by the Wallabies in Brisbane.

With the All Blacks runaway winners of the southern hemisphere championship, the Pretoria Test is a battle for second place and Australia have four points from three matches and South Africa just one from four.

The Wallabies, who face the Boks again on September 4 in Bloemfontein, have struggled at the 1 000-metre-plus altitude of the Highveld with their last Test triumph there 47 years ago.

  • many - 2010-08-24 13:03 many quotas this time around..??

  • Obvious - 2010-08-24 13:07

Glad Smith is fit. Let's face it, on paper this team can beat anyone. Let's hope the coach told them the right stuff to do this time, Deans is no fool.

  • Bliiksem - 2010-08-24 13:07

Excellent team ... except for Chili and Ricky again .. oh boy !!

  • 007 - 2010-08-24 13:09

    where the hell is Aplon???

  • Andre - 2010-08-24 13:11

And Januarie stays - are you putting the best interest of SA rugby or your personal interest first Mr PDV? Disgraceful

  • StevieB - 2010-08-24 13:13

How on earth do Januarie and Ralepelle stay in the 22? Gio Aplon out of the 22 after being possible the best back last week. Disgusting selections.....could have had Aplon at left weing with Habana on the bench for a rest.Bismark and Jano Vermaak or Ror Kocket could have come in.

  • Callie - 2010-08-24 13:13

Why drop Aplon? I am a big Frans Steyn fan, but Aplon has an attacking ability that is unmatched. He should at least be on the wing, or at worst on the bench?

  • Bliss - 2010-08-24 13:14

That looks better - good team - Just still no idea why on earth Chiliboy is still part of this squad.

  • Wessel - 2010-08-24 13:14

Yes please, this looks much better, still a few boys out with injuries etc... But i believe this is the best team we have fielded since the beginning of the TN, gonna be epic. Boks by 15

  • Mike@CapeT - 2010-08-24 13:14

A$^$@hole....this time he has no fetcher whatsoever in his match 22! F$#%king wonder the Boks are on a downward slope. Don't blame the players - blame the selection.

  • Johann - 2010-08-24 13:14

Serious!! Watse gemors is dit die?! Kies die beste 22!!!!

  • Animal - 2010-08-24 13:15

A very good starting team on paper , lets hope they can take it 2 the field!!

  • AB Supporter - 2010-08-24 13:15

Mmm, Looks like a sliced bok show coming up. Aussies 23 boks 18. Go All Black's.

  • BB - 2010-08-24 13:16

No Div, where is Bismark, Louw and Aplon let Habana and Spies go, they are like those old till slips in my wallet, might need them one day but should have been thrown out a long time ago.

  • Anonymous - 2010-08-24 13:17

There are at least eight better hookers in South Africa than the two named for this Test.

  • Dave - 2010-08-24 13:18

Bismark is our best hooker.... maar hy bly "Pomp by die shark tank pomp. Pomp..pomp" !

  • WeZo - 2010-08-24 13:18

DeJongh shud be in the starting line up, Aplon on wing and Steyn at fullback. C'mon guys - but hey, they are the selecters and know better. BOK FOR LIFE!!

  • AES - 2010-08-24 13:18

Jong on bench? why not on field with jaque? kankowski in louws place WTF? Wheres aplon? habana still there? Sorry de villiers you are really srewing this up. we need a fetcher!! more ball we have the more we can play !! hope he is reading news 24!!

  • AL - 2010-08-24 13:18

Solid backline. Pity about de Jongh, he's been playing well, but I hope the Fourie and de Villiers combo makes an impact. Welcome back Frans, we missed you. Matfield and Smit must boost their performance - if they do, we'll have a great lineup.

  • OneTime - 2010-08-24 13:18

Oh well at least the Sharks will still win this weekend With Beast and Bismarck still playing for them. Shame that Butch is not starting maybe the backline will get some ball from a true flyhalf. As for Aplon being drop, the should have thrown the fat boy Habana out of the squad. Oh why are we waisting Kankowski on the bench when everybody know Piere Spies is rubbish like his coach? Oh well come on the Black and White...

  • Frank - 2010-08-24 13:18

Habana should have been given a break with Aplon filling in on the wing.He can play anywhere in the back three

  • MikeL - 2010-08-24 13:19

So Chillieboy is better than Bismark, or is the latter injured?????

  • cobus - 2010-08-24 13:19

Why is De villiers dropping the best players? Aplon? Louw? And what is Butch still doing there?

  • Leslie - 2010-08-24 13:19

  • Bokless - 2010-08-24 13:20

I wonder how a player like Gio Aplon can just dissapear from a team after a great performance (my personal opinion). Bryan Habana has done nothing to prove himself. JP Pietersen could not even keep up with Israel Dagg (last try). The young man has proved his worth on so many occassions. Forgive me for being a bit sentimental!!

  • monster - 2010-08-24 13:20

If the Springboks cant beat the Aussies with this team, then there is no hope, NO HOPE AT ALL !!!

  • Just_Retire_Already! - 2010-08-24 13:21

I really hope Smit retires after this tri nations . . . Why is Chilliboy still there? Bismarck is clearly the best hooker in the country! Where is Aplon? Spies AGAIN? I'm sorry to say this, but looks like another loss . . .

  • aplon fan - 2010-08-24 13:21

Aplon deserves to start in front of Habana. Habana was the main culprit in the game last week by breaking the line and going for the intercept the whole time. Pathetic. And what the hell is January and Chilliboy still doing there? Bismark and any of the other scrumhalves in this country should be on the banch

  • NO MORE PDV - 2010-08-24 13:21

Eish! this team is ok , but why JP!! he lacks the pace and freaking to scared or dont tackle like he use 2! just chases them and does nothing!! would rather see GIO there!! Aye lets hope this team got what it takes to keep us at no 2!

  • Wakawaka - 2010-08-24 13:21

Good team except for the usual 2 rugby tourists Chili & Ricky. Imagine having Bismark & Ruan rather there... But Hoskins said transformation is complete so we just have to trust in him because us the rugby public are popos. Yea right!!!

  • Andries - 2010-08-24 13:21

WTF!!

  • Fetcher Fan - 2010-08-24 13:22

The team needs a specialist open side loose ball hunter to counter the likes of Pocock or McCaw. Where is Deon Stegmann? Still injured? Outplayed both of them in Super 14.

  • Megabull - 2010-08-24 13:22

    My team 1) Steenkamp-Bulls 2) Botha-Bulls 3) Jannie-Sharks 4) Danie-Bulls 5) Vic-Bulls(C)(not bankies-wp) 6) Botes-Sharks(cause Steggies-Bulls and Brosouw-FS is out, we need a real fetcher) 7) Potgieter-Bulls 8) Spies-Bulls(NOT ryan or dwyan they on look good in the CC cause Spies is not there) 9) Houggie-Bulls( Fourie-Bulls out) 10) Morne-Bulls 11) Basson-Griq 12) Wynand-Bulls( Not de villiers-wp or de jong-wp) 13) Fourie-WP 14) Shadow-Bulls( NOT aplon-wp AA EE or jp-Sharks) 15) Steyn- Racing M.. Bench Beast-Sharks, Liebenberg-WP, Kruger-Bulls, Flip-Bulls, Juan-FS, Vermaak-Lions, De Jong-WP(yes he can play here) ...... This team will win and should have been the Bok team

  • getting it righ - 2010-08-24 13:22

agree with bliksem, would have started Kankowski

  • stefmeister - 2010-08-24 13:23

Again the same underperforming players! Pierre Spies, Habana, Chilliboy and Januarie. Where's our fetcher? Why isn't Louw on the bench? Pocock will cause havoc. Come Saturday and we'll see again that the bench wasn't utilised properly. We're not playing France and Italy where your bench is for noobs to have a taste at test level. Why isn't Bismarck on the bench instead of Chilliboy, if Smit has to stay in the team? I guess we'll have to make piece that Spies and Habana will continue their mediocre performances week after week, and that our two quotas(bescause that's what Januarie and Chilliboy are) will be in the team regardless of merit and performance. But let's boot Aplon who gave a terrific performance and keep Habana who cost tries. Makes sense! Let's just hope for the best again and hope that our hearts won't be left bleeding again.

  • StuartW - 2010-08-24 13:24

  • Staalburgher - 2010-08-24 13:24

Actually it was January's ass-end pass that caused the ball to be turned over right at the end on the ABs 22 from where they scored the match winning try. The Springbok team is a farce as long as that muppet is in there. Screw you Div and ANC. You have destroyed just about the only left in SA that was achieving international success, you racist pigs.

  • Rendier - 2010-08-24 13:24

No place for Louw??? Dropping Gio??? Habana still there???? RickyKFC still there??? I'm a huge fan but hope we get a proper hiding on saturday cos sometimes u have to be cruel to be kind in order to see true change..

  • Turbo - 2010-08-24 13:25

SERIUOSLY What the muff is the deal with Ricky Januarie? he is so average!!!

  • callie - 2010-08-24 13:26

    Excellent choice!! Lets see now.

  • hasie - 2010-08-24 13:26

  • Stormers/WP Forever - 2010-08-24 13:27

Now I hope that WP gets the same favors from the national coach and release Aplon & Louw to WP to play, as he did for his favorite BB team when releasing 3 of their boks. Good bok team, but please leave January on the bench, he'll make the biggest contribution there. And Lastly, couch please sub Morne Steyn if he is kicking so pathetically out of hand again, the only thing he is doing is giving possession on a silver platter to the opposing team.

  • wtf - 2010-08-24 13:27

what is Butch James doing in the team?? coming of the bench as an impact player? nope not Butch.. Aplon would be a way better choice!

  • One weak link - 2010-08-24 13:27

Aplon to replace Habana - this would be a flippen smoking hot team!

  • JAM - 2010-08-24 13:28

What de hell did Aplon do wrong??!!

  • STORMER - 2010-08-24 13:30

Pierre Spies should have been a politician....ernstig. He could also spend the entire day doing nothing/zero/nada yet be assured of keeping his job. At least if he WAS a politician, we would have Duane Vermeulen playing at 8....One can but dream...

  • Vrystater - 2010-08-24 13:30

  • D the M - 2010-08-24 13:30

No Fetcher, even on the bench, ricky and butch still part of the squad, Aplon dropped out of the squad completely after a good game when habana stays in...seriously div, you're a moron

  • Yank - 2010-08-24 13:30

Looks solid but I fear a backlash from the Sports Committee/Stofile..... I'm not keeping score but some people are..... Hopefully Steyn (Frans) lives up to all the hype and Fourie has a point to make. Would still like to see Spies on the bench covering loose and wing positions. He could be a great impact player in the last 20 mins as a wing.
