No Kings spot for Mangweni

2013-01-08 08:28

Cape Town - One of Eastern Province rugby's stalwarts, Tiger Mangweni, has failed to make the cut for the Southern Kings' Super Rugby squad.

Mangweni, who was the EP Kings' player of the season last year, was not included when the Kings named a 40-man squad on Monday.

According to Die Burger's website, the 33-year-old centre is now likely to play a leadership role for EP in the Vodacom Cup.

Andries Strauss and New Zealander Hadleigh Parkes are the favourites for the No 12 jersey. Wayne Stevens shifted to outside centre last year, but can also be utilised on the inside, while Siyanda Grey, Ronnie Cooke and Waylon Murray will fight for the No 13 jersey.

Another veteran who will play Vodacom Cup and no Super Rugby is utility forward Wayne van Heerden. Van Heerden, 33, will also be utilised in a leadership capacity for Eastern Province.

The Kings, who will replace the Lions in this year's Southern Hemisphere competition, start their campaign at home against Australia's Force on February 23.

Southern Kings' revised squad:

Forwards:

Rynier Bernardo, David Bullbring, Kevin Buys, Cornell du Preez, Jacques Engelbrecht, Jaco Engels, Schalk Ferreira, Hannes Franklin, Ross Geldenhuys, Lizo Gqoboka, Virgil Lacombe, Tomas Leonardi, Bandise Maku, Edgar Marutlulle, Mpho Mbiyozo, Darron Nell, Daniel Adongo, Devin Oosthuizen, Steven Sykes, Wimpie van der Walt, Luke Watson (captain)

Backs:
Demetri Catrakilis, Ronnie Cooke, Wesley Dunlop, Siyanda Grey, Johan Herbst, Michael Killian, SP Marais, Scott Mathie, Waylon Murray, Hadleigh Parkes, Sergeal Petersen, Marcello Sampson, Shakes Soyizwapi, Wayne Stevens, Andries Strauss, Elrich van Vuuren, Shaun Venter, Nicolas Vergallo, George Whitehead

Hello Boneheads!!!!! Kings can still not have a worse record than the lions!!!

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-01-08 09:06

ruan, its only a matter of time...

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 09:23

What do you mean? The lions almost lost for a season and a half!!! if the kings dont win anything, maybe sa should just not have another team, because the lions surely doesnt deserve a spot either by your standards either!!

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2013-01-08 09:35

The Lions won at least one game in a season ... most seasons. Tiger hang around, keep fit. There are bound to be injuries as S15 is quite demanding.

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-08 20:00

DUS Ruan my ou oos kaapse se Queer onnersteuner ... jy is die beenkop!!!!

      frank.grootboom - 2013-01-08 21:07

Sorry to say but you lions supporters lot has completely lost the plot. Why are you still crying, moaning & sulking, what are you bunch of loosers trying to achieve by embarrasing your selves. You are already becoming a laughing stock, Don't you have lives of your own live rather then sitting at your computers/laptops ect, wasting your time waiting for an article about The Kings just to leave some sort of "bad negative comment" just to make's yourselves feel bettter because you can't accept it that your pathetic loins has been booted out of Super rugby! Stop being in-denial you are out of Super rugby!! If you think loosing players and you stadium is bad news, worse is still to come that you must prepare yourselves for an extended stay where you are now, just do yourselves a favour and put 2014/15 out of your minds because the Cheetahs or Bulls are going to beat you in the pro/regulation games. So sorry to put this on you now but its for your own benifit to spare you more future heartaches, crying & your pathetic sulkings.

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-09 00:17

frankgerald - ready to join the club of the pathetic ??... oh wait--- you and your team of queers are allready there!!! Moron!!!

      frank.grootboom - 2013-01-09 14:42

Julius malema just as your name state, a person with a below intellegence would revert to personal name calling like a street-nite-worker or an under-educated fool. "Queers, beenkoppe & Moron" what kind of human-being are you??? and sorry I would never join the pathetic club. What are you trying to proof with your lack of substance comments! What did the Watsons,E/Cape rugby & The Kings ever do to you??? Wake up from your dream Mr Juliusssssssssss you wil never be WHITE yes you gonna stay BLACK until the day you die.

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-09 15:30

frankgerald ... you r right my friend ... you never need to join a club that you are the founder member of ... so sorry for that oversight. As for me being black 4eva ... I am so happy that I will be black in SA bcos that means I will always be paid more than u even if I do half the work u do, I will get a free house when u have to pay for yours, free water that u pay for ... it is verrrrry nice being black in SA ... and you will be white 4eva ... shame.

      frank.grootboom - 2013-01-09 15:45

Juliussssssssss all I can say is Whatever you will probably never get the point, I am willing to work hard, pay for my own house ect. I will not wait for free hand-outs from the government who are stealing & wasting my hard-earn tax-money on themselves and lazy people like you who are only prepare to do half a job & expect more money then the real hardworking South Africans. I'm content & happy with who I am but I will say it again you are trying to be White and you will never be white.

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-09 16:03

ffffffffffffffffffffffrankgerald ... I do not need to get your point since I am your superior in SA ... and thank you for working hard --- your taxes pay for all my children ( I have 8 and my 3rd wife she is pregnant - btw she is white) to go to school and the laptop I am typing to u on ... and I rrrrrreally do not want to be white in SA ... Im verrrry happy being bleck ... but you although u r white will be pathetic since u are obviously a supporter of a a Queeer team with liars in charge of it ...

      frank.grootboom - 2013-01-09 16:37

No Julius, I am not white and I'm proud of my heritage but I will not steal from any other hardworking South African, although I'm black.

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-09 17:42

frankgerald ... I c u my brada ... we are both black then and on the same side. And being bleck in Sa means we both take from the white peepoel ... even if we both work hard. I work hard to ... I have 8 mouths to feed ... number 9 on the way ... white girls are expensive ... so if my government gives me the money of the white peepoel I will take it ... if my government gives me the job of the white peepoel then I will take it ... and if my president gives me the taxes of the white peepoel I will use it ... but I will never belong to the club of losers that support EP Queers rugby bcos a white man lied to us about giving bleck players a chance ... that is not south african way ... we should get the white player's job ...

  • handy.andy.773 - 2013-01-08 08:36

Cheaky, why don't you pick him as a quota player like they picked Luke for the springboks. Its not so easy when it your money thats at stake is it?

      luke.sportify - 2013-01-08 12:00

sorry u making no sense... stop drinking that handy andy pal

      luke.sportify - 2013-01-08 13:56

How many 33 year old centres are there in Super Rugby? He will do nothing in SR Let him shine and teach the youngsters in the Vodacom Cup

  • trevor.glanfield - 2013-01-08 08:41

Where are all the local players? The Kings were brought into Super 15 so as to improve rugby in the Eastern Cape and showcase their local players. What a farce, they will not win more than 2 games. Good luck Luke, you should have stayed in England.

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 08:57

Silly!!! you should stay off commenting and stick to sitting behind a tv and shouting at it!!

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-08 20:03

No WATCHMAN ... ALL theur talented players left to these greener pastures when the Watson's came to town ...

  • gert.swart.393 - 2013-01-08 08:47

Cheeky used to kots a lots of black players representing the demographics of the country - calling previous coaches racists when he cried at the feet of his ANC buddies. Now he does not practise what he preached and his own team does not have enough black players. Hypocrite or racist?

  • amber.rancic - 2013-01-08 08:52

So much for developing Eastern Cape rugby talent. What a sham.

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 09:24

      Also silly!!!

      patrickjasoncawood - 2013-01-08 09:38

      Develop players in Super Rugby?

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-09 22:12

Patrick seems the crowds dont notice that you were being sarcastic...

  • gert.nell.71 - 2013-01-08 08:52

This is going to be a loooooooong season! Shame.

  • GregGow1234 - 2013-01-08 09:00

Demetri Cataralilis you have just shot your self in your foot. Why associate yourself with this pathetic team? Your career can only go backwards now. The southern kings are going to concede cricket scores and records are going to be broken against them. They also cheat by bringing in more outside players than are actually allowed.

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 09:07

"They cheat", ha ha they are really being naughty aren't they!!

      lablue.phoenix - 2013-01-08 09:09

Yeah it is a pity, but I'm afraid he'd never get a chance to play in the starting lineup. He is better than Grant in my opinion.

      ewan.moffat.5 - 2013-01-08 09:22

Bring in more outside players than allowed? Welcome to professional sport. If you have a budget that enables you to attract top players, that's how it works. What a dumb comment! The Kings have been limited by SARU to the number of overseas players that they can contract, unlike Melbourne Rebels, who were given special permission to contract more overseas players for their 1st two seasons than Super Rugby allows. Try and get your facts straight before shooting off your mouth.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2013-01-08 09:53

Shouldn't be too bad if it's a New Zealand cricket score

  • ryno.peters.7 - 2013-01-08 09:00

Norman Nelson,Mzwandile Stick?why are they not in the team?

      patrickjasoncawood - 2013-01-08 09:30

      Not good enough??

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 09:51

I personally like norman and the way he plays, but we will just have to see!!

  • thethird.wors - 2013-01-08 09:06

    gonna get slaughtered.

      thethird.wors - 2013-01-08 09:29

and let me also add to that by saying SARU sold these guys down the river. gave them no chance. One season is all they will get to appease the poeopls in parliament and that's that.

  • Jaco Swanepoel - 2013-01-08 09:10

can somebody please just clarify whats the reason the kings got the promotion?because i was under the impression it was to develop grass root rugby in the eastern cape, but apparently it is to utilize the infrastructure of our roads and airports to transport players (globally and locally)!!what a shame, tiger is a genuine servant and shows what local players can achieve and what does he get after being named player of the year...well atleast the tourism industry will boom in PE because all the teams will go out and see the scenery and have a big jol, seeing that they wont take the kings serious!

      patrickjasoncawood - 2013-01-08 09:36

@Jaco,any idea where all the talented grass roots players are?? Playing for the other franchises Are they SK's meant to start year 1 with as stronger squad as possible with what time SARU have given them or make up the team with Academy players who haven't even played Vodacom Cup Rugby You can only develop young players with a strong core

      neville.watson.31 - 2013-01-08 10:00

I was under the impression that we could select three or four springbok teams from the players of colour who have been kept out by racist white administrators.

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-08 10:02

Patrick, glad youre here now too!!

      patrickjasoncawood - 2013-01-08 10:11

Don't take these fools to personally

      nick.koutsouvelis - 2013-01-08 10:26

Remember out esteemed rugby body SARU only gave them 1 season. This means they cannot finish at the bottom of the SA Conference or they will get relegated again. They have no chance to develop local talent with only 1 season. Even the Rebels and the Force struggled in there 1st season. and how long did it take the Cheetahs to become competitive? SARU made the rules and the promises so they are the reason this is such a joke not the Kings.

      neville.watson.31 - 2013-01-08 13:22

They'll finish at the bottom regardless

  • patrickjasoncawood - 2013-01-08 09:23

Decent squad, good to see a few senior players available for the Vadafone Cup.Thats where the Kings will develop the black academy players, the future stars of the Southern Kings Give these guys a chance SARU has messed the region around enough in the past few years SA Rugby need a team in the EC All the best, make it through to 2014 and things will only get better

  • lesbeen - 2013-01-08 13:41

Makes perfect sense... It's easy to put political pressure on selection when it's not your team at stake... Luke was a token selection and was never good enough to deserve Bok-selection on pure merit! Mangweni is their player of the season... Now not good enough? Pffftt!! And not given enough time? They had 10years to prepare and made the silly statement that they are ready for Super rugby before they were even awarded the spot... Now that they have it, they start with their excuses and whining! One year is more than enough for a team that got a freebie into Super rugby, the other teams had to be good enough to be there... The kings just had to place tongue on arse!!! If they want it, they will perform and achieve it!!!!

      luke.sportify - 2013-01-08 13:55

Tiger is 33, players player of the year Luke started for WP and the Sharks... He was picked for the Boks because of his skill He prob should not have been picked because rugby is a team sport and Jake knew he would upset the spirit in the squad 10 years to prepare?? where/how/who? Every single player with talent leaves EP at the agE of 19 as there is no Super Rugby in the EC Lesbeen, you are clueless mate....

      julius.malememba.7 - 2013-01-08 20:10

No PUKE sportify ... u r clueless !!! Tiger has experience and the Queers are going to need loads of that. Your sidekick Puke Watson was never good or skillful and was NEVER bok quality (much like u) ... and yes the EP Queers have had many yrs to prep for SR and they boasted that they could improve on the Lions record ... but they have NEVER shown enough ability to even threaten the CC top division in any way!!! Shame ... every talented EP player leaves the EP because of u and the WAtson clan ...

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-09 16:32

Ha Ha what a joke!! Fake Profile Julius, you should stick to the stronger booze, atleast they will let you pass out in peace!!

  • steven.crofton - 2013-01-08 14:44

I'm a Lions fan, but the Lions were too crap for too long and I think the Kings deserve a chance. Go KINGS!!!

  • matt.prinsloo.1 - 2013-01-08 16:38

They only had since 16 Aug to sign players for 2013, they only get one season to prove themselves. Yet, they manage to have a squad with 16 locally bred players, and 10 players of colour. How does this compare to the other franchises? Clearly there is development happening already. Their Vodacom Cup teams (EP, Border and SWD) will feature even more local talent and even more players of colour. The VC players now know at least they have a possibility to make a step up.

  • frank.grootboom - 2013-01-08 17:35

The Kings will surprise a few but they (the Kings & Cheeky/Luke Watson haters fan-club) are still going to have something negative to say! Can't they please stop these comments now. Can't a sane person somewhere in Gauteng please stop them, just make them stop please, they are just hurting themselves. They are now getting very irritated and boring but mostly very irritated. I appeal to sport24 to recommend that these people should be admitted into a mental facility because they can't get over the realistic fact that their beloved, pathetic Lions team has been booted out of Super rugby. Ag shame now there I go feeling sorry for the poor loosers/pathetic souls....! I wish they could just get a life because its not the end of the world, there is life after the shameful loosers of a Lions rugby team. If they don't get/understand this mesage then I must sadly admit that the lions supporters/fans needs urgent help in a loony-bin/crazy people hospital.

  • frank.grootboom - 2013-01-08 17:55

Just feeling so sorry for Tiger because he is a brilliant & very nice person as well as an excellent rugby player. This must be a very good sqaud if he can't make it as I have already pencil him in at center with either Andries or Waylon or atleast on the bench. I have moved Parkes to fullback in my team. I know its going to be an exciting Super rugby year in the E/Cape. I feel so sorry for the Lions and their supporters because its just wishfull thinking if they think that they are going to get back into Super rugby in 2014. They should rather prepair themselves for an extended stay without super rugby.

  • johnvkaraoke - 2013-01-09 06:22

i'm hoping the kings do win some games. port elizabeth needs big time rugby and soccer and this could be the start. pity we cannot get a soccer team also

  • ntora.mbilini - 2013-01-09 09:32

i'm really dissapointed in Cheeky Watson , his all talk no action. The inclusion of the Kings in Super rugby was on the premise that more black players from the eastern cape will be given a chance. Out of 40 players only a handful are black. Aluta continua for black players

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2013-01-09 12:21

Dude, we get one season to prove ourselves. We have to pick the best squad. Please diarise to check after the first few weeks of Vodacom Cup rugby how many black and coloured players represent the Kings unions of EP, SWD and Border. Everyone playing for those unions would now know that they at least have a chance to be selected for the Southern Kings IF they show potential, talent and perform. Also please refer to the Kings Academy and tell us how many black players are contracted there. 25percent of our Super Rugby squad is players of colour. That's a good enough start and it will grow with time. If we had SR from say 7 seasons back, we would probably have had Basson, Kolisi, Ndugane x 2, Mvovo and some other EC black players playing else where to add to the ones currently contracted. Don't expect miracles overnight. Cheeky, Anele and the rest at EPRU have done wonders for EC rugby over the last few seasons.
