Win or lose, Lions coaches pray

Cape Town - The Lions coaches have a ritual of praying in the coach’s box after every game.

According to assistant coach Swys de Bruin, the same was the case after last Saturday’s 42-25 Super Rugby quarter-final triumph over the Crusaders.

De Bruin, head coach Johan Ackermann and psychologist Jannie Putter all shared a prayer after the Lions qualified for the Super Rugby semi-finals.

“We don’t just pray when we win, but also when we lose,” De Bruin told Netwerk24.

“In this way we, as children of the Lord, give recognition to Him and the wonderful opportunity to be involved in this game.

“When Ackers took over this team four years ago, he gave this team to the Lord. The promise was made that the Lions would never again be the joke of South African rugby.

“That is what we stand for and why we say thanks after every game. If we only pray when we win, we’ll only confuse the Lord,” De Bruin continued.

In this weekend’s semi-finals, the Lions will host the Highlanders in Johannesburg (kick-off 15:00 on Saturday).
