Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson has called on Sanzaar to be creative in a bid to ensure that the 2020 Super Rugby season is able to be completed.

Sanzaar has postponed the competition for the foreseeable future after the New Zealand government issued a directive forcing incoming travellers to self-isolate for 14 days due to coronavirus fears.

Robertson said he understands the decision taken by the game’s governing body but, if possible, hopes the competition will resume in some shape or form.

“Be creative. If it is local NZ derbies, origin matches over the next few months and then we play the leader of the other conference, or if things kick-off and the borders are relaxed in a month’s time and we have a shorter version,” Robertson told the Stuff website.

“Whatever the opportunity is, the leaders of Sanzaar have to make a good call on what they think is the right thing with all the broadcasters, sponsors and fans.”

The Crusaders overcame red and yellow cards to claim a 49-14 win against the Sunwolves in Brisbane on Saturday. That result moved the defending champions to the top of the New Zealand Conference standings.

They will now have to wait to get an opportunity at winning an unprecedented fourth successive Super Rugby title.

The Crusaders flew back to Christchurch on Sunday afternoon, before the midnight deadline kicked in stipulating everyone arriving in New Zealand must self-isolate for 14 days.

“Jacinda nick of time,” Robertson quipped.

This was in reaction to Saturday’s announcement from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s of the stringent border control policy, which will be reviewed in 16 days.

“Jacinda made a call and we just have to adapt with it. Obviously, we’ve been through a lot of adversity the last few years so we know our mindset, we see opportunities in it,” said Robertson.
