Super Rugby and NRL unite for historic double-header

Sydney - Rival codes Super Rugby and the National Rugby League will play back-to-back games in the same stadium next season in a historic blockbuster double header.

The Canberra Raiders will travel to Auckland for a clash against the Warriors on March 21 at Eden Park, which will be followed 45 minutes later by the Brumbies facing the Blues.

It follows months of discussions between NZ Rugby, SANZAAR - which oversees Super Rugby - and the NRL with all sides keen to see how fans transition between matches.

"The double-header concept has been approved by NZ Rugby, SANZAAR and the NRL to proceed and we are very excited to take part in what will be a history creating event," said Brumbies chief Phil Thomson late on Tuesday.

The Brumbies reached the Super Rugby semi-finals in 2019, winning a fourth Australian conference title, whilst the Raiders made their first NRL final since 1994, going down to the Roosters in Sydney.

Warriors chief Cameron George and Blues chairman Don Mackinnon said in a joint statement it was an historic event that "united the once-deeply-divided codes".

"We have much in common as professional teams in international competition and we know that we have fans that follow both clubs," they said.

"Both clubs have worked together in recent years when the opportunity has arisen, and we have been trying to make this idea work for a couple of years."
