Thursday represented a 'transfer deadline day' for South Africa's Super Rugby franchises with it being the last of a 21-day window for players to exit their current contracts in the face of more lucrative offers from elsewhere.

This window was granted as part of SA Rugby's cost-cutting efforts in the struggle against the global coronavirus crisis, and it has made for a nervous few hours for the country's franchise coaches and the union administrators.

Late on Thursday, Sport24 gathered that Du Plessis had agreed to join a club in Japan.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Stormers loose forward Cobus Wiese was on his way to Sale Sharks in England.

Du Plessis, meanwhile, has had a torrid time at the Stormers in recent seasons with injuries threatening his career on more than one occasion.
