Stormers down Lions in high-scoring thriller

Cape Town - The Stormers have beaten the Lions 57-40 in a high-scoring pre-season friendly played at Newlands on Saturday.

Things did not start well for the home side with the Lions quickly running out to a 14-0 lead after 12 minutes through tries from winger, Madosh Tambwe and hooker, Malcolm Marx.

The Stormers were next on the board after some excellent handling saw lock Chris van Zyl over the tryline. The Lions then extended their lead when Tambwe scored his second of the match to put the visitors up 21-7.

But it was the Stormers who finished the half stronger by scoring two converted tries through Dan du Plessis and Siya Kolisi to bring the score to 21-all at half-time.

The Stormers hit the front for the first time in the match in the 45th minute with Nizaam Carr forcing his way over the line. They then extended their lead through a brace by Bongi Mbonambi to lead 40-21 with a quarter of the match left.

Two further Lions scores closed the gap to just seven points with 10 minutes remain but the Stormers were not finished yet with further tries from Cobus Wiese, Sikhumbuzo Notshe and  Jano Vermaak sealing an emphatic victory.
