So-so injury news on Smith's hamstring

Cape Town - New Zealand fullback Ben Smith has received a setback following his injury over the weekend after he was ruled out for up to eight weeks.

The news on his hamstring could see the Highlanders star miss the rest of Super Rugby’s regular season as they look to make the playoffs.

Smith sustained the injury in the 31-31 draw against the Chiefs, with assistant coach Glenn Delaney assuring fans the player will be back.

“Just a classic rugby incident where he got caught in a tackle and overextended,” he said, with the Highlanders third in their Conference.

“All the right things are being done and he’ll be back as quick as he can be with the right rehab.”

New Zealand and Highlanders team-mate, Aaron Smith, gave a likely timeframe on the fullback’s injury ahead of this week’s match against the Jaguares at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

“Six to eight weeks, from how the injury looked, you could say that was very lucky,” he said.
