Sharks youngsters impress Plumtree

Cape Town - Hurricanes assistant coach John Plumtree is impressed by the current crop of young players among the Sharks’ ranks.

Plumtree is back in Durban this week as the ‘Canes prepare to face the Sharks in a Super Rugby clash at Kings Park on Saturday.

Both Plumtree and head coach Chris Boyd will be returning to a favourite stamping ground.

Boyd was the Sharks’ assistant coach under first Dick Muir and then Plumtree at Kings Park from 2006-08.

Plumtree’s ties with the Sharks, first as a player and then as coach, stretched over two decades until he was forced to up sticks and leave Durban with his family in 2013.

Plumtree insists he is not out for revenge this week and instead expressed his approval of the Sharks’ play this season.

He told Netwerk24 that young players like loose forwards Jean-Luc and Daniel du Preez, as well as flyhalf Garth April had caught his eye.

“Willie le Roux also plays a big role in their success and he is someone that should always be carefully watched on attack,” said Plumtree.

“If they can manage to keep this bunch of young players together, they could develop into a top team.”
