Sharks skipper Schreuder backs young talent

Durban - The Sharks go into their opening Super Rugby fixture of 2019 against the Sunwolves in Singapore on Saturday knowing that they will likely blood a few youngsters on the trip.

Coach Robert du Preez has named a travelling squad of 25 for the fixture with the likes of Aphelele Fassi (21), Phepsi Buthelezi (19), Kerron van Vuuren (23) and Khutha Mchunu (21) all looking for an opportunity to put their hands up to break into the plans for the rest of the season.

Fassi does have Super Rugby experience with the Sharks already, but there is a particular interest in young No 8 Buthelezi, who captained the Sharks U18 side last year.

"I'm very excited to see what the young guys can do and they really put their hands up in the pre-season games," new Sharks skipper Louis Schreuder said ahead of his side's trip to Singapore.

"We know about Fassi from last year, but guys like Phepsi have really performed well and they will definitely get a shout in Super Rugby."

Turning his attention to the Sunwolves, Schreuder acknowledged that it was difficult to know what to expect from the Japanese outfit.

"We don't know anything about the Sunwolves this year and they haven't played any warm-up games. We don't know who is going to be in their team and squad," he said.

"I'm very excited to see what we can do."

Kick-off on Saturday is at 12:55 (SA time).
