Relief for Lions as Whiteley expected to be back soon

Cape Town - The Lions breathed a sigh of relief after learning their skipper Warren Whiteley has a "small cartilage tear in the knee" after missing last weekend's Crusaders encounter.

Whiteley was ruled out by management after failing a late fitness test in Christchurch, where the Lions lost 36-10.

The Lions medical team said on Wednesday that Whiteley's knee injury will "settle over the next few weeks".

Meanwhile, flank Cyle Brink has a mild strain of his knee sustained against the Crusaders this past weekend. The Johannesburg-franchise stated that he should be ready for their next match against the Waratahs in Johannesburg on May 11.

Utility back Sylvian Mahuza has a LCL injury on his left knee, which he suffered in Christchurch with the medical team "investigating further".

The Lions, who are bottom of the South African conference standings, have a bye this weekend.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
