Cape Town - The Lions have welcomed scrumhalf Nic Groom to their Super Rugby squad.
This comes after it was confirmed earlier on Tuesday that Groom would leave English club Northampton Saints with immediate effect to join the Johannesburg franchise in Super Rugby.
The 28-year-old arrived joined Northampton from the Stormers in 2016 and quickly established himself in Saints’ starting line-up, making 51 appearances and scoring seven tries.
The Lions confirmed the signing of Groom via a press statement on Tuesday afternoon, with the No 9 signing a deal from March 31, 2018 until October 31, 2019.
“The Lions would like to welcome Groom and his family to Johannesburg. Thank you to Le Cap Sports and Northampton Saints for supporting Groom in his move and future endeavours,” read a statement released by the Lions.
Groom added that he was looking forward to joining up with his new team.
“My time in England with the Saints has been hugely satisfying on many levels. I’ve learned so much and I’m a better player and person for it. The opportunity to return to South Africa has come a lot sooner than expected but it’s one that I am really excited for. I’ll be joining a great team with high ambitions and I am looking forward to getting started,” Groom said.
