Cape Town - All Black bad boy of yesteryear Richard Loe has served up the ultimate indignity to South African derbies in Vodacom Super Rugby... he thinks they are “goat shit”.
The front row meanie of the 1980s and early 1990s delivered his scientific - or perhaps not? - verdict in his regular column in the New Zealand Herald newspaper.
Writing after the completion of Week 12 at the weekend, Loe wrote: “The depth in New Zealand rugby at the moment is amazing.
“Picking the (All Black) side is a really good problem for (Steve) Hansen to have.
“In contrast, coaches of opposition international teams must be thinking ‘bugger’. There will be no vulnerability about the All Blacks.”
Loe said that in Super Rugby terms, New Zealand sides were “pushing the boundaries” and producing “blockbusters” like the fast-tempo clash last Friday between the Highlanders and Crusaders in Dunedin (the hosts and defending champions won 34-26).
“Counter that with games between two South African teams and they are as boring as goat shit.”
South Africans might be tempted to retort that Loe would know a thing or two about goat excrement - he is a farmer.
There is further disturbing news for the former prop: he will have to endure two SA derbies at awkward NZ hours this weekend as the Bulls host the Stormers in a top-of-conference affair at Loftus (19:20) and the Sharks entertain the Kings in the earlier slot (17:10).
