This was also Lions coach Johan Ackermann's final game in charge of the Lions. He will now head off to coach Gloucester in the English Premiership.
Assistant coach Swys de Bruin will take over the head coaching duties.
Feel for Kwagga Smith, but the decision was correct by Jaco Peyper. Can't blame the ref.— Brenden Nel (@BrendenNel) August 5, 2017

Gutsy effort by the Lions, they've been super again this year, but the Crusaders are a cut above, deserved 8-time champions. #SuperRugby— Sias du Plessis (@siasduplessis) August 5, 2017

72'- CONVERSION slotted by Jantjies.
Lions 17-25 Crusaders
67'- Crusaders probing near the red zone, but a forward pass brings some relief for the Lions.
Can the altitude factor aide the 14-man Lions here in the last 13 minutes?
64'- CONVERSION slotted by Jantjies.
Lions 10-25 Crusaders
61'- Lions sub as Faf de Klerk replaces Ross Cronje at scrumhalf. Can he add some spark to the Lions attack?
NZ Herald headline last week: "Peyper shouldn't ref final." This Monday: "Peyper inspired choice as ref." #SuperRugbyFinal— Craig Ray (@craigray11) August 5, 2017

51'- Easy PENALTY slotted by Mo'unga.
Lions 3-25 Crusaders
DID YOU KNOW?
Ryan Crotty has scored 5 tries in his last four matches against the Lions - all at Ellis Park...
49'- However, desperate defence from the Lions sees them win a turnover.
Great to still see the effort from the Lions on defence, but they are up against it here.
The siren sounds and the Crusaders kick it out. The celebrations can begin for the men from Christchurch. It is their eighth title. They meant business from the first minute and will deservedly lift the trophy. One must feel sorry for the Lions as they are halted at the last hurdle for the second year running. They showed lots of fight in the last 20 minutes but ultimately the 14 men came up short
LIONS 17 - 25 CRUSADERS
De Klerk knocks on with one minute to play. All but over for the Lions in this final
Jantjies kicks the penalty in the Crusaders 22. They need to score, and fast if they want to pull this remarkable comeback off
CONVERSION, LIONS, JANTJIES! 17-25: He adds the extra two with ease. The Lions need to score twice still but they have all the momentum
TRY, LIONS, FOURIE! 15-25: Scintillating rugby from the home side. Mapoe makes the initial break before Coetzee is hauled down short of the line. But it's the reserve front rower who muscles his way over under the posts
Mostert darts through a gap but he cannot stay on his feet and collapses 10 metres short. The Crusaders defense is at sixes and sevens but Janse van Rensburg coughs it up with the try line begging
CONVERSION, LIONS, JANTJIES! 10-25: Jantjies sends the ball through the center of the posts from the right touchline. Can they pull off the comeback of all comebacks?
TRY, LIONS, MARX! 8-25: de Klerk throws a long pass before Combrinck goes close. The covering Crusaders cannot stop the big hooker
A little bit of handbags after the latest scrum. Peyper clears the ruffians away and Jantjies has a chance to set up an attacking lineout
Two lineouts later and the Lions find themselves tracking 70 metres backwards as Crotty clears well
The Lions set up a lineout in the Crusaders 22. It is now or never for the home side
PENALTY, CRUSADERS, MO'UNGA! 3-25: Easy enough for Mo'unga as he extends the lead to three converted tries
Illegal scrummaging is the latest offense from the Lions which sets up a sure three points for Mo'unga
Both teams partake in a kicking battle before Crotty decides to test out the Lions defense. It folds once again as he skips past several tackles before eventually being hauled down five metres short
CONVERSION, CRUSADERS, MO'UNGA! 3-22: Mo'unga takes two steps and pops over the extras
TRY, CRUSADERS, READ! 3-20: What ever was said in the changeroom at half time by the Lions coaching staff did not work. The Crusaders backline show quick hands in midfield with the latest pass finding Read who bursts through Combrinck''s tackle and is in under the posts
Matt Todd wins a penalty and Mo'unga sticks the Crusaders deep into Lions territory
The whistle sounds and the Lions get us underway in this second half
PENALTY, CRUSADERS, MO'UNGA! 3-15: Mo'unga extends the lead as the hooter sounds
Many pundits tipped the Lions to be too strong at home but the Crusaders have dominated the first half. They are certainly in the driving seat considering the Lions are down to 14 men.
LIONS 3 - 15 CRUSADERS
Big trouble here for the Lions. Havili jumps brilliantly to claim the high ball but Kwagga Smith connects with him in the air. Both players look to be in a spot of bother. Smith can go nurse that in the changeroom because he is off! RED CARD!
The Crusaders trademark this Super Rugby campaign has been their ability to absorb pressure. Again, they force a penalty with the Lions baring down on their try line
Deliberate knock on from Taufua with numbers out wide. Surely a yellow card offence, but he gets away with rap on the knuckles from Peyper. The Lions kick into the corner
The Crusaders rumble it up in amongst the forwards before a Crotty crash ball breaches the Lions defence. He goes over but is held up. Eventually the home side clear their lines
PENALTY, LIONS, JANTJIES! 3-12: Jantjies gets the home side on the scoreboard with a sweetly struck penalty
Havili has a pot at goal from no less than 55 metres. He gives it a fair bit of leather but it veers right and safely into the grateful arms of a Lions defender.
The Lions are losing the territorial game thus far as this time Skosan is forced to kick. The ball skews off the wingers boot.
The 'Saders and Dagg would have been in for their third try albeit for a try saving tackle from Skosan
Mistake by Mapoe as he knocks on in the Crusaders 22. Hall spots no one at home for the Lions and kicks down field. It's the big man Mostert who tracks back, he gathers but is forced into touch
TRY, CRUSADERS, GOODHUE! 0-12: The Lions crowd is completely silenced now. Jantjies kicked the restart straight out of play and the Crusaders capitalise from the scrum. Taylor made some good yards which opened up space for Goodhue on the left wing. This time Mo''unga misses from out wide.
CONVERSION, CRUSADERS, MO''UNGA! 0-7: Beautiful kick from the left hand touchline by the Crusaders number ten
TRY, CRUSADERS, TAMANIVALU! 0-5: The Crusaders turnover Lions ball deep in their own half. Hall shifts it to the blindside and Tamanivalu shows he's got jet shoes as he sprints in unopposed
The Lions put together some phases before Jantjies tries a drop goal. It is well wide in the end.
You sense a bit of nerves in the early exchanges as both teams are playing their cards close to their chest. Combrinck's kick is gathered by Dagg and clears toward the halfway line.
The crowd erupts as Jaco Peyper's whistle sounds. We're underway at Emirates Airline Park!
Hello and welcome to the Super Rugby final where the Lions and the Crusaders battle it out to be named the 2017 champions. No one could argue that their place is not deserved with both teams only losing one game each
