Lions wait on Mapoe as injuries mount

Johannesburg - The Lions were hit hard by injuries this week and will wait for Springbok midfielder Lionel Mapoe to know if they will have another long term injury on their hands.

Mapoe has a suspected broken hand following their win over the Reds last week and will see a specialist on Friday after an initial scan revealed a “spiral/hairline fracture” to his hand.

But while they wait for the news, there was no good news for Jaco van der Walt, who has a dislocated foot and will be on the sidelines for “about 8 weeks”.

Prop Dylan Smith will undergo a shoulder operation and be out for 4 months, while fellow prop Johannes Jonker has concussion and is following the laid down protocol for his return.

It is hoped that Jonker may be able to return next week.
