Lions to make late call on Whiteley

    2016-07-18 15:25

Cape Town - The Lions have named a group of 25 players from which their final 23-man squad for Saturday's Super Rugby quarter-final against the Crusaders will be selected.

Regular skipper Warren Whitley, who was expected to miss the entire playoff series with a shoulder injury, will undergo a fitness test on Thursday after which a final call will be made on his availability.

In addition, a couple of players that travelled to Argentina for last Saturday's match have picked up a stomach bug, but will hopefully be ready to take part in training from Tuesday onwards.

The Lions finished second in the overall standings and will welcome the seventh-placed finishers, the Crusaders, to Ellis Park.

Earlier in the season, the Crusaders beat the Lions - at Ellis Park - 43-37.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 16:30.

    Lions 25-man group:

Dylan Smith, Corné Fourie, Julian Redelinghuys, Jacques van Rooyen, Akker van der Merwe, Malcolm Marx, Franco Mostert, Andries Ferreira, Lourens Erasmus, Warren Whiteley, Ruan Ackermann, Warwick Tecklenburg, Jaco Kriel, Cyle Brink, Faf de Klerk, Ross Cronjé, Elton Jantjies, Jaco van der Walt, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Courtnall Skosan, Ruan Combrinck, Andries Coetzee, Sylvian Mahuza, Howard Mnisi, Lionel Mapoe.
