Lions to end 10-year drought against 'Canes?

Cape Town - A look at the history between the sides does not make good reading for the Lions ahead of Saturday's Super Rugby semi-final against the Hurricanes in Johannesburg.

The last time the Lions beat the Hurricanes was in 2007 when they secured a 30-7 win at Ellis Park with flyhalf Andre Pretorius kicking 20 points.

Since then, the Lions have lost eight straight matches against the New Zealanders, with two of those having come last season.

In 2016 the Lions were smashed 50-17 at Ellis Park in the group stages of the tournament before going down 20-3 in the tournament final in Wellington.

The Lions have spent a large part of the last decade as a side languishing near the foot of the Super Rugby table and, in most of those clashes against the 'Canes, were nowhere near the force they are now.

Still, if they are to progress to the final of this year's competition, the Lions will have to do what they have not been able to in a very long time.

Head-to-head results:

2016: Hurricanes 20-3 Lions (final)

2016: Lions 17-50 Hurricanes

2015: Lions 8-22 Hurricanes

2014: Did not play

2013: Did not play (Lions excluded from tournament)

2012: Lions 28-30 Hurricanes

2011: Hurricanes 38-27 Lions

2010: Hurricanes 33-18 Lions

2009: Lions 32-38 Hurricanes

2008: Hurricanes 38-12 Lions

2007: Lions 30-7 Hurricanes
