Cape Town - Lions captain Warren Whiteley is an injury concern for Saturday's Super Rugby clash against the Highlanders in Johannesburg.
The 31-year-old has struggled for fitness all season with first a pectoral injury and then a recurring knee injury seeing him sidelined.
He played all 80 minutes in this past weekend's 29-28 win over the Waratahs at Ellis Park, but the news out of the Lions camp on Tuesday was that he is suffering from a bruised knee.
According to a Lions spokesperson, Whiteley sat out of training on both Monday and Tuesday and a call on his availability for Saturday would only be taken later in the week.
If Whiteley is unavailable, then hooker Malcolm Marx will be expected to lead the side once more.
The Lions, who have contested the last three Super Rugby finals without ever getting over the line, are currently fourth in the South African conference and ninth overall, just outside of the playoff positions.
They will name their side for the Highlanders fixture on Thursday.
Kick-off on Saturday is at 15:05.
