In-form Barrett deflects praise

Cape Town - Hurricanes flyhalf Beauden Barrett played down his performance, despite a virtuoso showing against the Chiefs in Saturday's semi-final win.

Barrett set up one try and scored another in Wellington, with the former effort from a brilliant chip kick and regather inside his own 22.

"It was an instinctive play. I got the lucky bounce and yeah...," Barrett told Stuff, with that a key try for the 'Canes early in the game.

"What I saw was a brick wall in front of me, so I didn't really want to run into it. I just saw there was a bit of space in the back and backed myself."

Barrett then intercepted a pass from Chiefs flank Sam Cane to further extend his team's lead, but again he hinted that they were fortunate.

"We weren't that organised [defensively]," he said.

"They got the ball in pretty quickly. We weren't set but, yeah, we just kept coming forward."

The Hurricanes now prepare to host the Lions in next week's Super Rugby final but Barrett admitted they first needed to celebrate this win.

"Absolutely. I'm so excited and so happy with the result tonight. I think we've got to smell the roses when they come," added the flyhalf.

"We've given ourselves an opportunity to go one better than last year, there's no hiding from that. To have given ourselves that opportunity, we're just so excited and we've earnt another Monday so we're pumped."
