Hurricanes' Woodward signs for Bristol

Cape Town - Bristol have confirmed the signing of Jason Woodward from the Super Rugby champions, the Hurricanes.

Woodward will arrive in Bristol at the beginning of November.

He represented the Wellington franchise in this year's Super Rugby final, starting on the wing in August’s 20-3 victory over the Lions.

The 26-year-old - who is equally adept at fullback or wing - has made 43 appearances in Super Rugby for Melbourne Rebels and the Hurricanes, notching 252 points.

“Jason is an excellent acquisition for Bristol and a player who has consistently impressed in the Super Rugby competition,” Director of Rugby Andy Robinson said.

“He’s quick, solid under the high ball and has a strong kicking game. For Jason, this is a fresh challenge for him and we know he’ll be determined to make his mark in the Aviva Premiership.”

Woodward represented New Zealand Under-20s, helping the team to the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship title in Argentina.

He added: “I felt it was the right time for me to come and experience playing in a new environment and Bristol Rugby is the right fit for me.

“It’s a great club with a big supporter base and a city that is passionate about rugby. I’m looking forward to working with the coaches and players that Bristol have here.

“To sign off from my time at the Hurricanes with a Super Rugby title was a fitting way to finish and now I’m excited about testing myself against quality opposition in the top flight of England.”
