Cape Town - Reds number eight Scott Higginbotham has reportedly been arrested and charged for assaulting police in Brisbane on Saturday night.

It is alleged the powerful Wallaby, who has made 32 international appearances for his country and has played for the Rebels in the past, illegally entered a Fortitude Valley Police Beat and assaulted an officer after one of his friends was arrested for urinating in public.

Fox Sports report Higginbotham intervened after his friend had drawn police attention with a source saying he tried to "play peacemaker".

Queensland police service confirmed the charges on Sunday, with Higginbotham set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 21.

The Australian Rugby Union released a statement on Sunday afternoon about his arrest, signaling that their integrity unit was looking into it.

"The Queensland Rugby Union has today referred a matter to the ARU integrity unit concerning an incident involving the Reds player, Scott Higginbotham in Brisbane last night. The ARU integrity unit has subsequently launched an investigation into the incident today," it read.

"As the matter is currently with Queensland Police, no further comment will be made at this time."
