Former Sharks flyhalf April joins new Japanese club

Former Sharks flyhalf Garth April has extended his stay in Japan after signing a deal to join Top League second tier side Shimizu Blue Sharks.

The 28-year-old had previously represented the NTT Communications Shining Arcs in 2018 and 2019, but has now sealed a switch to the Blue Sharks, the same side that recently recruited former Stormers and Bulls centre, Johnny Kotze.

The 2020 Top League season was among those cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, April, who is also part of the Sunwolves Super Rugby team, could still be involved in a new-look Super Rugby tournament down the line as one of the models being discussed by Super Rugby officials involves a 'crossover' finals series with Top League teams.

April played 21 Super Rugby matches for the Sharks before heading for Japan.
