Chiefs won't rush Ngatai

Cape Town - Chiefs inside centre Charlie Ngatai remains a doubt for his side ahead of this year's Super Rugby competition due to concussion symptoms.

Ngatai, 26, suffered a knock to the head against the Highlanders on May 7 last year and has been struggling to return to action ever since.

The Chiefs kick-off their season against the Highlanders in Dunedin on February 24 and is seems they could well be without the midfielder.

"He is getting better, it has been an incredibly slow process," head coach Dave Rennie told Stuff as they continue to monitor the playmaker.

"He's not back in full training, he's starting to ramp things up a bit. He's had a few setbacks over the last period of time and there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, but we're not going to rush that.

"What tends to happen if you push things a little bit too much you go backwards a bit. So it's been a frustrating time for him.

"Anything's possible, so we've had a replacement in, Alex Nankivell, who's been running round with us. And with Tim Nanai-Williams back, he can cover midfield, we've got Anton (Lienert-Brown) and Johnny Fa'auli, and Beaver (Steven Donald) has played a bit of 12 in Japan recently, so we've got other options."
