Bulls to ask SANZAAR if Boom can play

Cape Town - Loose forward Boom Prinsloo has no regrets about leaving the Cheetahs for the Bulls.

The former Blitzbok represented the Cheetahs in 50 Super Rugby matches and the Free State Cheetahs in 30 Currie Cup games, but announced earlier this week that he will join the Bulls.

“I’ve been in Bloem for a very long time and I think a change was necessary in my career. I’m really enjoying it, I’ve only been here for two days but it’s a great place... the facilities, everything... I’m really impressed,” Prinsloo said at a Bulls training session on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Pretoria franchise - until October 2019.

However, he may not feature for the Bulls in Super Rugby this year because he has already represented the Cheetahs in the competition in 2017.

SANZAAR regulations state that a player may not represent a team if he had already been named in the match-day 23 of a different side in the same season.

Prinsloo, however, confirmed that the Bulls will be in contact with the southern hemisphere governing body about the possibility of him playing Super Rugby at some stage this year.

“They said they’re going to try and see if I can play maybe, but it’s a new challenge for me and I’m excited and I’m honoured to come and play here. It’s a nice opportunity for me for my future.”

Should SANZAAR turn down the request for Prinsloo to play Super Rugby, the Bulls will look to utilise him later in the year.

“The contract Boom signed was not only for Super Rugby. He can play an important role in the Currie Cup later in the year and we wanted to get him integrated into our systems as soon as possible,” Xander Janse van Rensburg, the Blue Bulls Company’s high performance manager told Netwerk24.
