Bulls protected if Hendricks heart issue resurfaces

Cape Town - The Bulls will not be held liable should winger Cornal Hendricks suffer a heart-related ailment during his tenure in Pretoria, a report indicates.

The Bulls last Friday announced the signing of the Springbok wing, who has been sidelined in recent times due to a heart ailment.

Netwerk24 reported in Sunday that a clause in Hendricks’ contract will protect the Bulls should anything heart-related happen to Hendricks.

The 30-year-old wing played 12 Tests for South Africa between 2014 and 2015 before the health setback which saw him unable to attain a contract despite attempts at several unions.

A source told the Afrikaans publication that the Bulls “have protected themselves” so they cannot be held legally responsible if something heart-related was to happen to Hendricks during practice or during a game.

After thorough examinations and testing Hendricks was cleared to play again by a leading heart specialist, while the player himself declared that he was fully aware of his diagnoses and possible effects and/or risks associated with his condition.

“As with any rugby player that plays this beautiful game, I fully understand the risks that go with it as I enter into this contract with the Blue Bulls Company. I accept such risks," Hendricks said via a press statement released by the Bulls.

Hendricks said he was keen to get back on the field, contributing and playing for the Bulls.

"I have played in a number of invitational tournaments around the world in the last two years, so I am keen to become part of a team structure and squad again, especially one known for their good culture and structure. The Bulls are definitely a team in an upward curve, so it is pretty exciting joining them."

The BBC's High Performance Manager, Xander Janse van Rensburg, said they were happy to welcome Hendricks into the squad.

"We evaluated him and are happy to give him the opportunity to play professional rugby at the highest level again. After all, he is a great player, a Springbok, and a truly great team man as well, who will contribute and fit into the Bulls family with ease. We are keen to see him perform again.”
