Strauss hits out at ref Lawrence

2012-07-01 17:44

Cape Town - Lions captain Josh Strauss has lashed out at the performance of referee Mark Lawrence after their 27-17 loss to the Stormers at Newlands on Saturday.

The Lions nearly caused an upset, trailing only 13-10 with less than ten minutes to go before the Stormers closed the game out in the dying minutes.

But Strauss believes the result could have looked different had Lawrence blown certain scenarios differently.

"Some of those calls I thought were not fair, and when it came at crucial times, it cost us," Strauss told SAPA.

"It was very frustrating coping with some of Mark Lawrence's calls.

"We're a side that play for each other and we've played together in the Currie Cup.

"We need a little bit of luck to convert those close games to wins."

The Lions' stand-in coach, Johann Ackermann, believed the match was there for the taking but inexperience allowed the Stormers to land the knock-out blow in the final seven minutes.

"At 13-10 with nine minutes left, we were definitely still in the game," Ackermann said.

"It came down to a lack of experience and there were signs of nerves.

"We will have to learn to focus on what must be done.

"Our scrum went very well, despite changes to the pack before the game."

As I said before: Another referee assisted win for the Stormers.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-01 17:52

Totally agree... You right Strauss we all saw it on TV don't worry we are behind you...

      Andrew - 2012-07-01 18:11

      boooohoooohooo!!! STORMERS!!!

      mark.polley.336 - 2012-07-01 18:20

@Ampie 100% agree Lawrence should ref in a stormers jersey....... Lions for life!

      bill.vanzyl - 2012-07-01 18:49

I thought blaming the ref for a loss was the sole preserve of Blue Bulls supporters???? I guess the Cheetahs had better also name the ref..........

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-01 19:06

Mark, that would be too obvious. Mark Lawrence was pretty obvious without the jersey though.

      Fred - 2012-07-01 19:11

It's ridiculous that referees play such a central role in rugby. They should hardly be noticed, in the background managing the rules. They're officials, for heaven's sake. The way to change this for the better is to rely more on TV replays by allowing teams three appeals per game, and to add an additional referee or two onto the field of play. One Ego trying to manage a complex game like rugby has never worked, ever. Yet the IRB continues to allow the Ego's of referees to dominate.

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-07-01 19:29

If a ref is in a position to decide the outcome of a game you must know that you havent played hard enough.

      deon.hamilton - 2012-07-01 19:42

Ampie, do you realise that we kicked the Lions' back sides at Coca-Cola Park as well. Wrong time of the year to eat grapes - their sour!

      Robsschele - 2012-07-01 19:46

      RetiefC - 2012-07-01 19:55

What happened to the penalty advantage to the Lions in the 66th minute? Lawrence conveniently forgat when the Lions lost the ball forward. This was the game changing moment.

      jack.reacher.5621 - 2012-07-02 08:54

@ FRED Sorry but those suggestions are thick. For one, the IRB is trying to make the game faster and more open to allow for a more exciting game creating more try opportunities. To then allow 3 appeals per game would slow down the game eminsely, this is not cricket my friend. So a team appeals a penalty awarded against them, this takes time to review. Then let us say the penalty was awarded incorrectly so what would be the next logical step ? Do you give a scrum to the team that was wrongfully penalised or do you give it to the team that had the ball at the time of the awarding of the penalty ? Both would feel hard done by and it would still most probably give positional play to one of the teams AND you would have slowed down the game -- 6 times in a game!! And people complain about one referee and you want 3 running around the field which would most likely mean more of the whistle being blown and each referee would have to respect the others decision. But put that aside because in actual fact you already have 3 officials on the field that at this level should be more than competent. The two Assistant Referees on the touch line have a communication system and should be assisting the referee in his calls. They are briefed by the referee before the game in what areas they should focus. They can help with all aspects of the game i.e. open play, offsides, rucks, mauls, scrums, lineouts, touch-in-goal and tackles. So the referee should be well covered at this level.

      Gorm !!

      Freddie - 2012-07-02 13:53

Shame Josh, why don't you try another player petition to get him fired as well. Idiot!

      goyougoodthing - 2012-07-02 17:30

The Lions won the CCup due to Lawrence last year... his refereeing in the final was diabolical... he even hugged them afterwards!!!

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-01 17:50

Careful Josh, they'll suspend you and do nothing to him. The refs are above the law, no reviews or sanction when they have a bad game. In this era of professional sport the officials should be professional too!

      joneethling - 2012-07-02 00:49

Lawrence allowed the Lions to slow the ball down and play negative rugby. There was one ruck where he was shouting at a Loins player who was holding the ball on the ground to release it. Where was the penalty (or at that stage - yellow card?) They Lions are an undisciplined bunch of crybabies and failures. Hopefully they will not be in Super rugby next year. They do everything in their power te trip up SA teams, and give 5 pointers to the Aus and NZ teams.

      Bergie - 2012-07-02 07:47

Agree Jon. The lions came to cape town to play their spoiling brand of rugby. They need to be booted out of the super 15. We do not need undisciplined thugs like them. No wonder the coach had to resort to hardball with these guys. Its the only way to control them. He got fired for that!

  • malcolm.molver - 2012-07-01 18:04

Mark Lawrence is a Stormers supporter. Not the first time he's helped the Stormers, and unless he's taken to task, it won't be the last time.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-01 19:07

      100% Correct.

      jack.bleck - 2012-07-01 19:41

Ag please Harold - don't get me started on Jaco ek bly 'n bul Peyper & Marius bloubul Jonker! Need I remind that the only official Sanzar apology for poor reffing this year was handed down for the Brumbies game that was gifted to the Bulls via blatantly biased reffing!!!

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-01 20:24

Just like Marius Jonker is for the bulls

      jc.burger.3 - 2012-07-02 10:33

Mark Lawrence is a hometown ref, like many others. 50/50 calls go to the home team. That's why home ground is an advantage, except if the "other" Lawrence is the ref! Just look at the 'Saders/'Canes game on the weekend!

  • pierre.conradie.7 - 2012-07-01 18:10

  • - 2012-07-01 18:11

There is a reason why Lawrence never made it to a RWC. The same reason he has decided to retire from International rugby. He just isn't good enough ANYMORE.

      Keith Stewart - 2012-07-01 19:02

      Well said

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-01 19:07

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-01 21:54

Let's see how you play a game, or ref one. Mr know it all. Please. - 2012-07-01 22:33

@Lean. I AM a retired referee, anytime you'd like to compare your match performance with mine give me a shout. LOL

      Henry - 2012-07-02 09:13

Lawrence has a huge chip on his block, wants to be no: 1 on field of play and be noticed all the time. I fully agree that he should retire. Go and feed the sheep and drink papsak sponsered by rest. Stormers have a huge problem, they don't have ability to score tries and will be thier downfall end of season. Then we hear what Stormers fans have to say.

      jack.reacher.5621 - 2012-07-02 09:38

@ AJ So are you a retired international referee? Don't recall seeing your name on the elite panel at any stage. The only reason Mark was not selected for the RWC 2011 was due to his age but IMO was still a better referee than some of the referees selected at the RWC 2011. He tried to manage the Lions players but they were very poor at the breakdown and by the time a referee has to tell a player twice to do something a penalty should have already been awared. Perhaps the game has sped up a little since your day as a referee as you know there have been a number of law clarifications and a few amendments in the law book. In addition there are areas where the IRB has told referees to be strict, namely the tackle area. As a retired referee you should know everyone can have a bad day but if you look at consistency then Mark has done a great job as a referee. I am sure your match reviews by referee coaches would not have had a 100% mark everytime you refereed.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 09:52

Jack, where did AJ say that he was an international referee? Come on idiot, tell us.

      jack.reacher.5621 - 2012-07-02 12:04

@ Harold, Sounds like you need to grow a brain. You don't need to take things so literally, the way that AJ came across made himself appear to be an authority on rugby referee's hence the comment. Idiot.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 13:03

Idiot? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Idiot. - 2012-07-02 16:29

@Jack. I didn't say I was an international referee. I agree how that you shouldn't need to manage players twice. BUT do yourself a favour and look how many times he DOES tell the Stormers player to "leave it" when on the deck and then still doesn't penalise them, eventhough they have achieved what they wanted by slowing down the Lions' ball. So he was to old to make the RWC, but he is still young enough to referee the fastest rugby competition in the world? The mind boggles. In general just so we are clear. I am not accusing Lawrence of cheating, I am accusing him of being past it.

  • Hermann - 2012-07-01 18:13

Sour grapes - both sides can complain.

      Hermann - 2012-07-01 20:26

@ the 83 thumbs down - come on Lions can't you lose gracefully, as is you are proudly on the bottom of the rankings and without the Lions there cannot be winners.

      Skinfaxi - 2012-07-01 22:11

I'm a Sharks fan and couldn't care which team won on the day. I was, however, hoping to see a good game of rugby and not a one eyed reff determining the outcome of the game.

      Keith Stewart - 2012-07-01 19:01

You Stomers supporters are hilarious. RetiefC - 2012-07-01 19:58

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-01 20:50

Did you notice how Lawrence wanted to continue playing after the hooter? Maybe that was to give the Stormers their bonus point!

  • bill.vanzyl - 2012-07-01 20:12

In reality, you have 30 grown men chasing after an odd shaped inflated ball, all trying their utmost catch the ball and carry it over their opponents goal line - the 196 pages of the IRB rule book dictate how they are supposed to do this "within the rules of the game" - resulting in somewhere around 125 stoppages in any game of rugby. The poor ref has to know the content of those 196 pages and to apply them while trying to keep an eye on all 30 somewhat delinquent players at the same time, many of whom deliberately infringe upon the rules as often as possible. So when the 30 players make mistakes it is okay, and they do at around 250 or more per game, but the ref will be burnt at the stake if he makes a single mistake?? Ever wondered why the masses prefer soccer?? It only has 17 rules, which include stuff about the size of the field, the size, weight and air pressure in the ball, the length of studs etc etc.

      raymond.abrahamse - 2012-07-01 20:26

Yes,very true. Some people don't watch the game, they watch the ref to see if he makes a mistake.

      jake.thesnake.3950 - 2012-07-02 00:42

Good point. Never really looked at it that way. It actually says a lot about the average intelligence of the supporters of those respective sports. Soccer is too slow, though, and I can't stand watching all the ladies fall about all the time. Quite sad, actually.

      vark.nek.90 - 2012-07-02 09:35

That is why they call rugby the more intellectual game of the two. The masses will allows prefer the more common form of anything, like for instance the vuvuzela. . Rugby need more rules to keep people away who regard OUR game as " 30 grown men......"

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-02 09:54

      Like Stormers supporters, varknek.

  • RemoteMedic - 2012-07-01 20:59

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-01 21:05

The Lions were attacking just after 70 minutes. Bekker tackled Elton, he turned over the ball illegally in the tackle. Penalty - score 13-13. Lawrence doesn't penalise him, ball gets kicked downfield, try scored from scrum. Score 20-10! Game effectively over! Like or not the ref had a direct impact on the result with this error. He was standing at the ruck, if he didn't see the infringement maybe he should not be reffing. This is not the first, nor last game this year to be effected in this way. I just hope the Stormers do not whine when it goes against them!!!

@DOMHUGO, and we love how you come and display your eastern cape education here on a platform for intellectual people only! The biggest IDIOT here is you!

      inmotion2 - 2012-07-02 14:02

Oh, and my Name is still Hugo Klaasen, I'm not hiding away from it....not sure why it came up with inmotion2 name

  • Hugo Klaasen - 2012-07-01 22:16

Do you guys remember this clown....? Pro legoeta....and mr Joubert...where can we get some match stats on these guys performance...they are ALL for the bulls...except the most recent one....

  • Jaimie - 2012-07-01 22:29

Maybe the IRB should not allow any person to become a referee is their surname is Lawrence.

      anwar.addinall - 2012-07-01 22:39

No, I think Martin Lawrence will make the guys laugh too much. He's definitely not an option.

  • Tygerr - 2012-07-01 23:51

Jeez, get a grip Strauss. First you guys blame the coach, now you're blaming the ref. How about the terrible on-field decision making and horrible ball skills the players have been demonstrating the whole season? Time for the Lions players to man up and start playing rugby, not just whinging about everything...

  • Dakey - 2012-07-02 00:07

Josh, come play for the Kings next year.

  • theunis.botha.96 - 2012-07-02 01:36

I agree. The ref had a brilliant game agaist the Lions.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-07-02 07:09

Your choice of words are so to the point. "The ref had a brilliant game agaist the Lions. " Lawrence and Jaftha earned their match fees and extras

  • Theuns Jacobs - 2012-07-02 05:04

@strauss. jip you said it! u need luck, which means you had too much luck in the curry cup! stop blaming everybody else like the anc !!!

  • piet.boerie - 2012-07-02 05:05

Rugby is fixed and if you are dumb enough not to notice keep watching. It is a disgrace what happens in S15, let alone fixed RWC's

  • Claude - 2012-07-02 05:55

In this game it was swings and roundabouts. The first Lions try came when the Stormers got a very harsh call so stop crying!

  • michael.vermeulen1 - 2012-07-02 07:06

Josh Strauss, if it is luck you need to advance in this competition, you might as well surrender as you are going nowhere very quickly. Admittedly, Lawrence was poor, but it cost both sides. Check your video session out on Monday.

  • Toby - 2012-07-02 07:08

being at the bottom they need more than help from the ref luck they never had the guy who doesnt know a knock on when he sees one

  • mthunzi.phakathi - 2012-07-02 07:09

The problem is the irb and the constant rule changing. Now they r doing away with certain things n introducing others. Gone r the days of simple rugby, now its all about rule changes every season. But its sad that players cant call a spade a spade.

  • stefan.v.dupreez - 2012-07-02 07:25

Must say, on the wat kyk jy blog, they said the Stormers must watch out for the Lions secret weapon, the CryBaby, they were right.

  • mvw74 - 2012-07-02 07:34

Shame poor old Josh that’s why your team always ends up stone last every season. Close just doesn’t cut it boet you’ve lost many close games and now you want to start throwing the blame game!?

  • - 2012-07-02 07:48

Always the ref to blame for the players inabilities. First it was Bryce Lawrence now it is the much praised local Mark Lawrence. Seems like the name Lawrence is the devil in disguise.

      Claude - 2012-07-02 08:12

Those two are chalk and cheese. One blows as he sees it the other has a bias. Bias is the kindest way to put it but some would use much stronger language.

  • P.J. - 2012-07-02 08:12

Foeitog! Die ander 12 games wat hulle verloor het was seker ook die ref se skuld! Cry babies!

  • Groenkoors - 2012-07-02 08:16

I thought Derick Minnie cost the Lions the match. He repeatedly infringed at crucial times. The Lions did play very well though.

  • Richard - 2012-07-02 08:49

Said it before and I'll say it again. Mark Lawrence is a clown with a whistle in his hand. I cannot believe he is held in such high regard by SANZAR's panel. He cannot help but want to be in the limelight, he thinks the game is about him, and he makes a fool of himself regularly. What are "speed bump" and "pillars" on a rugby field? Clown of note.

  • byron.wright.102 - 2012-07-02 08:50

Lawrence has been poor all season for many different teams. Its not bias just he is getting on and isnt quite as sharp as he once was. He may be doing a Kaplan and staying until he is forced out.

  • Philip Mostert - 2012-07-02 08:52

Watch the game again, the ref made many mistakes. You wont call Strauss a cry baby in hes face! It was a good performance by the lions

  • sam.swanpoel - 2012-07-02 08:59

Totally agree some of the calls against the lions was mind boggling. Mind Lawrence has always been against the lions we expected that from the kickoff.

      cobus.jooste - 2012-07-03 08:31

      Hahahaha... you are pathetic mate!!!

  • paul.cunliffe.315 - 2012-07-02 08:59

Stormer played 14 won 12 ....Lions played 14 won 2...not rocket science, nor ref intervention !! Then again, looking like most of the comments, there isn't anyone with enough brains to fathom it !!

  • ben.trevelyan - 2012-07-02 09:03

Its never the lions fault, its either the Couch or the reff, take some responsabilty and i do not hope Ackerman talk to hard with the Lions players, he might hurt there feelings and he might get fired. Never saw such a bunch of looser in my life. I was up set about the Kings coming in next year, now............................GO KINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
