Strauss boost for Lions

2012-04-11 07:48

Cape Town - Lions captain Josh Strauss will be ready for their trans-Jukskei derby clash against the Bulls in Johannesburg on Saturday.

According to the Beeld newspaper, the eightman's back injury was not deemed serious enough to rule him out.

Strauss injured his back against the Cheetahs last week, a game the men from Johannesburg lost 26-5 to suffer their fifth straight defeat, which keeps them rooted at the bottom of the Combined Super Rugby log.

But there was also some bad news for the injury-plagued Lions, with young lock Paul Willemse ruled out for a few weeks due to a shoulder injury. The burly 19-year-old was impressive in his Super Rugby debut against the Cheetahs.

A groin injury also rules scrumhalf Michael Bondesio out for the second time this year.

The Lions have now used 33 players in six Super Rugby games this year. To put that into perspective: The Bulls used only 29 players through the whole of the 2011 season.

The Lions' clash against the Bulls kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday.

The number of players used this year by SA teams after seven rounds of Super Rugby:

Lions (33); Cheetahs (28); Sharks (28); Stormers, Bulls (27).

Just give them time.... I know they had to much time already, but either they start bad or they finish bad. As hulle net vir die volle 80 minute kan speel sal ons definitief 'n groot verskil kan maak. 'n 1ste helfte soos teen die crusaders en 'n 2de helfte soos teen die cheetahs dan is ons daar!!! GO LIONS

The two worst performing SA teams, Sharks and Lions, MUST merge to make way for the Southern Kings in 2013. Let's vote. We call the merged team: Golden Guppies, or Clawless Catfish ???

      Johan - 2012-04-11 09:50

Merge and make way for the worst performing team in SA History, one of the oldest unions and you have won how many cups of any sort.... 1 I think over 100 years. Yes this makes perfect sense !!

Does anyone know what happened to Wikus? He was only supposed to be injured for two weeks, but we're now nearing the halfway mark of the competition and still no word on when he's coming back.

    Give that man a razor!!

  • nelius.vantonder - 2012-04-11 11:17

I have seen several comments over the past weeks about why Wikus van Heerden is not in the team as we was originally ruled out for only two weeks in the beginning of the competition...are Sport 24 sleeping??? Why aren't you following up on this story? It is a big story...Wikus is part of the core leadership of the team, a brilliant lineout jumper and an incredibly hard worker. With him back, most of their lineout problems is sorted - not all, still need to fix the throwing in problem, but most. They have an extra grafter in their pack and a leader who can support the team and Josh and keep moral high...WHY IS HE MISSING? What is going on there...we want answers Sport 24!!!!

Have they fixed the "medical" problem with his hands not being able to hold on to the ball or catch it ???
