Stormers to up attacking intent

Cape Town - Stormers forwards coach Matthew Proudfoot has acknowledged that they'll need to start attacking more if they want to beat the Bulls in their Super Rugby clash on Saturday.

The Stormers were guilty of trying to defend their lead against the Lions last week, which nearly cost them after building up an 18-0 advantage early on. In the end they just managed to sneak home 24-19 at Coca-Cola Park.

But Proudfoot told Die Burger a replication of their effort last week won't suffice this time round, no matter how strong their defensive structures are.

"The Lions used the phases really well and it was a good lesson for us to learn: for how long you can use the ball and how to stay patient.

"But the Bulls are a whole different prospect: one knows they storm hard and consistently at the advantage line until they get momentum.

"Very few teams on earth can hold out against that for 80 minutes. So we'll have to make sure that they defend for at least the same amount of time as we do.

"Their defence at the advantage line is top notch, but so is ours.

"Nowadays you can't dream of being one of the big teams if your defence is not up to scratch," said Proudfoot.

The clash at Newlands kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday night.
