Stormers soar to S15 summit

2012-05-19 21:12

Cape Town - The Stormers returned to the top of the Super 15 with a 19-13 win over Waratahs at Newlands on Saturday.

But for the second week in a row, the Cape Town side were outplayed in the second half and had to hang on to win and claim top spot ahead of Waikato Chiefs of New Zealand because they have won one match more.

Stormers led 16-3 at half-time, but their Australian opponents dominated a scrappy second half in wet, slippery conditions.

It was the 10th win in 11 matches for the Stormers, but they have yet to earn a bonus point for scoring four tries in a match.

They looked capable of breaking the bonus-point drought when they scored two tries within 16 minutes in the first half and hammered at the Waratahs line seeking a third before the break.

But they seldom looked like adding to the try count in the second half.

"We're the first to admit we haven't played our best rugby but I thought we improved this week," said Stormers centre and captain Jean de Villiers.

He added that the side's next two matches -- away to South African rivals Sharks and Bulls -- will give a strong indication of their prospects for the rest of the season.

Waratahs loose forward and captain Rocky Elsom said he was disappointed with his team's first-half performance.

"Our strategy was spot on, but our execution let us down," he said.

Fly-half Berrick Barnes kept Stormers under pressure with his tactical kicking, but Elsom said poor defence allowed the Stormers to score their tries.

Waratahs started well and took the lead through a penalty by Brendan McKibbin, but Stormers produced a good backline move from a line-out in the opposition 22, with full-back Joe Pietersen taking the final pass to score in the left corner after 17 minutes.

Pietersen landed a penalty goal before another attack from a line-out, after the Stormers opted to kick for touch instead of goal when awarded a penalty, resulted in a try from hooker Tiaan Liebenberg.

A close-range penalty by fly-half Peter Grant gave the Stormers a 16-3 half-time lead, but the Waratahs reduced the deficit to three points with a converted try by centre Rob Horne and a penalty by McKibbin in the first seven minutes of the second half.

Another Grant penalty gave Stormers some breathing space and neither side could score in the last half hour.

The home team's stuttering second-half performance came a week after fellow South Africans Central Cheetahs came back from a 16-0 deficit to score 14 unanswered points against the Cape team.

The scorers:

Tries: Pietersen, Liebenberg
Pen: Pietersen, Grant 2

Stormers top of the log where they belong. Viva stormers

      Staal - 2012-05-19 22:46

By what other margin should they be leading the table?

      Pieter - 2012-05-20 00:14

Geluk, Stormers, maar as julle so bly voortneuk gaan julle my 'n hartaanval gee!

      Pierre - 2012-05-20 00:22

During the 2007 cricket WC there was also an insistence by the media that a certain run rate needed to be maintained else SA is not going to beat Australia etc. etc. Jacque Kallis was practically booed of the field for batting to slow. What has that got to do with the Stormers? Everything. Lets not make that stupid mistake again of setting artificial targets. Winning is all that counts and playing high risk rugby to score tries, might actually cause losing the game; it certainly can cause more injuries. In 2007 SA never even played Australia in the final; because of this stupid run rate syndrome, SA lost against weaker teams they should have beaten easily. Most important the super run rate was in the end never needed. The bonus point thing of the Stormers is most likely not to come into play either. If the Chiefs lose one game the bonus point thing is gone and that is likely as they play the Crusaders. I know the Stormers still need to play the Bulls and the Sharks too, but the point is this competition is going to be won by wins not bonus points. The media destroyed our 2007 WC with setting some stupid run-rate targets, instead of just making sure the game is won. Let’s not do the same to our S15 changes by insisting on bonus points.

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 03:48

Baie geluk!!!

      mthunzi.phakathi - 2012-05-20 08:29

Sorry to interject at this stage irt the 2007 CWC, if my memory serves me right we lost twice to the baggy greens, once in the groups and then in the semis. Granted the second was bcoz of our ridiculous stroke play against G McGrath in the opening overs.

  • dawiej - 2012-05-19 21:15

Sorry bulls , better luck next weekend

      Sean - 2012-05-20 01:33

I`m not even a Bulls supporter ! Now please tell me , BRIGHT SPARK , what chance do you have to win the super rugby ?????? F@KKOL !!!

      Jason - 2012-05-20 09:38

Sean - I cannot wait to watch you eat those words.

      Jan - 2012-05-20 14:14

Next week Chiefs 35 Bulls 10 Stormers 35 Sharks 10 anyone wanna bet

  • Jack - 2012-05-19 21:17

    Stormers jou leka ding!!!

  • Danie - 2012-05-19 21:18

      Danie - 2012-05-19 21:33

Miskien omdat ek 'n Stormer in my hart is maar my verstand se vir my ons kan nie vir altyd so aangaan nie, iewers gaan ons, ons vasloop deur net vir 40 min te wil sleep. Maar die hoop beskaam nie.

      Staal - 2012-05-19 22:51

No one is denying it is better to win WITH bonus points. But what is ridiculous is the sense of doom that anti-Stormers want to sell. Seriously people. Get a life. I also want them to score more tries but how about your teams get a few more wins instead of just bonus points, hey? Ending 7th with 8-10 bonus points helps nothing.

      Jason - 2012-05-20 09:16

@Danie, when we get to the playoffs its going to be exactly this kind of (grind out a win) rugby that will be needed!

      Robsschele - 2012-05-20 11:35

Geluk Stormers. Al het ek 'n paar grys hare by.

  • Anele - 2012-05-19 21:19

shaping up to be a huge contest at the Shark tank next weekend!!!!

  • Priester - 2012-05-19 21:21

Great game! I enjoyed this one thoroughly and it was close call......... again. Congratulations Stormers, you have done us proud. Blou Bul Groete.

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 03:52

Ek stem Priester... Geluk Janneman. Die Brannas was seker soet gisteraand ne ou Jan!!

  • Hugo Klaasen - 2012-05-19 21:24

Waar's die "haters" !!!? Top of the log!? Deserved team on top now!

      Jean - 2012-05-19 21:42

      Hugo Klaasen - 2012-05-19 22:05

Agree J. But gotta love the smell of top log....

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 03:57

Hugo... IDIOOT!!! As jy rugby ken sal jy weet dat TOP OF THE LOG redelik baie verander soos spanne speel en wen en verloor. Julle was self al top of the log... is afgestamp en is weer terug. Die ding ry wipplank. Top of the log maak saak as dit by playoffs kom. Intussen lyk my jy is ook 'n "hater" so join the club aap!!!

  • Jean - 2012-05-19 21:26

Hoe kan n span elke 2de helfte van n game so swak speel... maar lyk my selfs speel die stormers swak ander spanne kan hul net nie wen nie. Naweek het mooi geeindig (en begin)!!!

  • dangelo.fredericks - 2012-05-19 21:31

Once again...An absolute excellent game to my STORMERS team, great attacking strategy, well done my boys, keep up the good work....STORMER 4 LIFE!!!

      johan.hattingh.5 - 2012-05-20 11:02

Are you sarcastic! Cause thats the only way your comment makes sence!

  • Peter - 2012-05-19 21:39

A win is a win. winning is a habbit, albeit ugly, but the Stormers are perfecting the art of closing the game. I for one would rather win and be consistent, than win pretty and play like the cheetahs.

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-19 23:46

The CHETAHS plays attractive rugby, although they not winning. CHOKERS play for 40 minutes and then requires the ref to keep them in the game the next 40!!!!!!!!!!!

      Pieter - 2012-05-20 00:29

My hart sal beter hou!

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-20 11:29

Nicolast.. do u even know anything about rugby. That ref story is

      Robsschele - 2012-05-20 11:47

I would like to raise a point and like to know what you guys think of it. If you are close to the opponent's goal line and you get advantage for a penalty and you fail to score a try during this advantage, shouldn't you be forced to kick at the post or the touch line when you are called back for the penalty.

  • Henmich - 2012-05-19 21:39

First! Thanks for the win guys!I'm still grumpy, however. The best defence,a much more 'yster' pack and 'blitze',but we are still fading in the second half? With what this team have, you are suppose to bury the competition in second half!

  • hannes.handogg - 2012-05-19 21:42

The hills are aliiiiive, with sound of music!!!!

  • dangelo.fredericks - 2012-05-19 21:50

Who cares whether the Stormers played scrappy...Like Naas said, a win is a win.

  • Quintin Rowan - 2012-05-19 21:54

That is what you call quality team.AYEYE!! STORMERS AYEYE. The pink-panthers(blue bulls)are real chokers.

  • Jonathan Rose - 2012-05-19 21:55

Stormers will win S15 only threat is crusaders...Go stormers

      1amAlan - 2012-05-20 10:39

And the Bulls, Sharks, Chiefs and Brumbies. I'd rather stay quiet until after the Bulls clash.

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-20 11:30

Alan.. dont forget youre playing the Chiefs next and if I'm you i'd rather reserve comment until after that game

      1amAlan - 2012-05-20 17:42

Stormkaap, I'm a born Capetonian, and except for 3 years I spent in Joey's and Bloem in the army, I've lived the rest of my life hear in Cape Town. I'm a Stormers and WP supporter, but if you think our boys are going to have a walkover, dude, you're delusional. You saw the Rebels and Reds dish out hidings last week. Nothing is for certain in this competition, except that the Lions and Blues will ot get through to the playoffs.

      1amAlan - 2012-05-20 17:58

OK, Stormkaap, you're forgiven. I can see how my comment could have been misleading. What I meant was Stormers vs Sharks then Stormers vs Bulls. Only if our boys come through those 2 games with wins will I dare to shoot my mouth off, but please feel free to shoot yours off.

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-20 19:15

Really? What have you been smoking lately? Smell the coffee pal, CHOKERS has never and never shall win the Super 15 trophy. It will be a dream only

  • Malcolm - 2012-05-19 21:59

Let's get this straight. We are top of the log, winning matches and doing well in pressure situations during matches. Scoring tries may create more opportunities but preventing tries creates a better platform. And that's what we doing preventing tries. Well done my stormers kinnes!!

      stiaan1 - 2012-05-20 03:12

  • Raymond - 2012-05-19 21:59

Not Impressive.Stormers cannot take a grip on the game or dominate upfront.

  • bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-19 22:31

I worry about the prospects for the Bok captaincy - John Smit was brilliant at calming those second half nerves and enforcing discipline when the going gets tough. The current candidates for the job all have a problem of sorts. Jean Div is a good PR man, and good at leading a team going forward, but we have had two weeks where the Stormers fell off the game in the 2nd half and seemed leaderless. Jean needs to tighten the discipline in these circumstances, but does not. Pierre Spies is no better - he seems to disappear from view when the going gets tough, also misses far too many tackles close in. I thought he was on the verge of becoming a brilliant No8 but he has gone backwards and I am not sure that he is the best 8 in the country anymore. Andries Strauss is not the 1st or 2nd choice hooker, never mind the captaincy. Josh Strauss is captaining a team headlong into oblivion, and Keegan Daniels is simply not Springbok material as a flanker. Where to the Bok captaincy???

      bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-19 22:33

And please do not say Luke Watson, he has not played big rugby for some years down in the kaal-voet leagues.

      bfvillet - 2012-05-19 22:41

i am starting to think jean de villiers and spies as vice captain dont think Meyer will select any one above spies he will probably start as no 8

      dave.reyneke - 2012-05-20 07:43

Dewald Potgieter will be a fine captain... He needs regular game time to stake his claim though He just had a run of really bad luck He could be a serious future contender

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-20 11:34

Bill Spies has been lost for the 3rd season now. In fact watch the cheeetahs game yesterday and on performance Spies has moved a notch further back with VD Walt turning in a great perfromance at no8. Anybody but Spies and if Meyer chooses Spies as the run on no8, I would serously loose respect for his judgement. Tha fact that Watson hasnt played Super rugby doesnt detract from his ability as a captain or the ability to lead.

      Robsschele - 2012-05-20 11:53

Andries Strauss is a centre. The hooker is Adriaan Strauss. I see you left out Schalk Burger.

      bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-20 15:44

Sorry - got the Andries and Adriaan mixed up. Left Schalk out of the equation as he will not be available for the foreseeable future.

      Luke - 2012-05-20 18:16

Personally I feel Keegan has been one of the competitions stand out no 8's and can play flank as well. We, as a country, are going through a loose forward crisis and I hope he is in contention to maybe even make the bench.

  • Ken - 2012-05-19 22:57

Well done Stormers!.....but with all due respect, you didn't soar like the headline suggests, it was more like a penguin bellyflop!....but well done anyway!

  • stiaan1 - 2012-05-20 03:29

Sodra die bulls nie wen of top of the log is nie dan fade hulle soos hulle span as plan A (aka enigste plan) nie werk nie. Kan iemand dit verduidelik.\r\n\r\nO ja. STORMERS JOU LEKA DING!!!!!!

      Bossie - 2012-05-20 09:40

Ek sien toklos se ware kleure kom weer deur- Heel beskeie gister toe sy span verloor- hahaha- jy is eintlik net 1 groot pateet!

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 12:56

Bossie... Gaan suig jouself... So suck it up IDIOOT!

  • Gary - 2012-05-20 04:19

Waratahs found yet another way of losing....this time in the first half. And make not mistake, the match was there for the taking - such a yawn. It may not be the case in SA, but on the world stage rugby has to compete with many other winter sports and that means, amongst other things, attracting crowd interest. So called "purist" ten man rugby is boring to the non "purist" spectator who would rather see an exciting contest. Sorry to say but the Stromers style of kicking the ball to the other end of the field and defending in the oppositions territory until they make a mistake for a penality is unattractive. The bonus point was introduced to reward enterprising rugby.

      Raymond - 2012-05-20 07:08

The ball was wet. Anyway the Stormers kicked a WHOLE lot less than the Waratahs. Before making statements of fact, check the facts. Theres a Snooker game on TV especially for you.

      Phillip - 2012-05-20 09:01

Who cares about the style of rugby the Stormers play.At the end of the day I think it's about winning the Super 15

      WernerZA - 2012-05-20 16:25

I said it before... Another newlands snoozefest... That snooker game sounds quite attractive right now...

      Gary - 2012-05-22 14:50

Did not exactly count the kicks ingenral play but did count the tries scored. Snooker games do not feature over here. Too many other winter sports that we play on the international stage to cature out attention such as AFL, league, hockey, soccer etc; You may have heard of them. I had no idea that Stormers rugby and snooker were so clsoely aligned. Thanks for letting me know: but I will pass. Give me running rugby any time

Hope when Stormers head to the Shark tank next weekend they get forced to play some exciting rugby,if they do it will be an epic game, if they dont I sincerely hope they get a thumping to wake them up.

  • Ruan - 2012-05-20 07:38

Not the best. At least we were in controll of the score. Don't see us winning the cup like this, but were are building a good foundation to start hitting the boosters for the final few games. But we are gonna have to find our top gears. Go stormers. I know you can find them.

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 12:59

Craig Joubert was your first gear IDIOT! Now who will be the second gear against the Sharks and third gear against the Bulls.... Oops, no 2nd and 3rd gear... if they appoint proper refs yes!

      Ruan - 2012-05-20 21:13

Pffffft. Same excuse, different week. IDIOT! Seems we have all the Super rugby refs on our pay roll.

      Jahendel - 2012-05-21 13:25

@Tokkie Last time I checked Craig was on the BB payroll

  • Michael - 2012-05-20 07:56

Hmmm, the issue of bonus points, well, if a team wins every match by only a single point they will win the competition - tough to do but mathematically possible. About the game then - the Stormers were sharp in the first half, clinical, direct, aggressive, physical, go forward possession and probably most impressive their handling in difficult conditions but, then came the second half..... You can't keep making 10 meter putts to save par! By all means win by the smallest margin but creeping into the collective, defensive shell the way we did again throws away hard fought momentum and hands the opposition the pshycological upper hand and sooner or later it is going to translate into a loss

  • WernerZA - 2012-05-20 08:42

    Another newlands snoozefest... Congrats!

  • Jaan - 2012-05-20 09:05

To all the Stormer supporters, this week we must back the Bulls because if the Chiefs run in 4 tries (which is most likely) than Stormers must score bonus points against Sharks in Durban (which is most unlikely) and top spot is gone. Chiefs have a much easier end run than Stomers in terms of competition. Last 7 years Super champs won by team with home final.

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 13:04

We don't need your support thank you. We make our own luck. Don't ask other teams for favors because you lack bonus points... Just think of it... If the Stompies scored 4 tries in just four of the games that they have won out of the ten, you wouldn't have been in a position where you are doing the math of other teams helping you at this stage hey! Bonus points coming to bite you in the #ss in the end I reckon!

  • John - 2012-05-20 09:05

If they produce two more stuttering performances and beat the Sharks and the Bulls, I'll be happy

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 13:04

      In your DREAMS yes!!!

      paul.sdoow - 2012-05-20 15:23

a win is a win . it don't matter how its done. four points in the bag is a whole load better than one point for losing by a small margin. don't worry dreams don't count tokols you will be wide awake when your team gets their one point on 2June at moftus.

      Cavin - 2012-05-20 15:44

Then be prepared to be miserable.......

  • Enrico Capazorio - 2012-05-20 09:10

Well done to the Stormers. Another hard fought victory against a determined opponent. Important to note that these close victories are being achieved without key loose forwards who are out injured. Look forward to 2 more hard fought wins before the international break. Losing at home to the team(Blues) second from bottom hardly inspires confidence. Just saying.

  • Bossie - 2012-05-20 09:45

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-20 19:33

Bossie, I think your secretly a Bull supporter! Please do your self a favor and come out of the closet? And for the record, I am not gay, straight as an arrow and happily married for 21 years, but as the saying goes, it takes one to recognise the other? I watched the game again this morning and my conclusion is the same, CHOKERS were kept in the game by Craig Joubert. 2 Examples, 1st knock-on by CHOKERS happened just inside Warratahs territory, Craig plays advantage (disadvantge) to them because he calls advantage over 20 meters back from where the ball was knocked on! 2nd example, whilst CHOKERS were on attack on Tahs goal line, suddenly 2 balls were on the field! According to the rules, the ref should have stopped the game immediately, had one ball removed and played a scrum with the put in to the attacking team. If you do not believe me, go and watch the game again. Their 1st try should basically have been dissallowed!!!!!!!!!!!! Now you CHOKER supporters tell em whether Craig did not kept them in the game with his whistle or not!

      Bossie - 2012-05-21 13:31

Ag Niccie- bottomline- hierdie "chokers" is top of the log!

  • Malcolm - 2012-05-20 10:11

Let me remind you of this heading. \Highlanders break bulls hearts\. Pink and broken hearts do go together. It seems like bulls supporters cannot really watch the game objectively. Next time you watch the game keep a rule book with you.

  • Jacobus - 2012-05-20 10:28

mooi stormerssssssssssssssssssss, top of the loggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • carina.koen - 2012-05-20 10:31

Well ja OK, the Stormers won and that is never a bad thing. However, they certainly did not "soar" to the top of the log, they crawled. They cannot win the Super 15 with the type of rugby displayed in the second half yesterday.

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-20 11:38

And the Bulls chocked @ the Barr.

  • Jacobus - 2012-05-20 10:32

  • carina.koen - 2012-05-20 10:33

Well ja no fine, the Stormers won and that's always a good thing. However, they certainly did not "soar" to the top, they crawled. And they nearly lost the match. Be realistic - like any other Stormers supporter, I would like them to win the Super 15, but with second halves like the one yesterday it's not going to happen.

  • WernerZA - 2012-05-20 11:12

      Bossie - 2012-05-20 11:45

      WernerZA - 2012-05-20 12:06

      ... And he strikes a nerve... :)

      Andre - 2012-05-20 12:28

  • Jeffrey - 2012-05-20 11:32

Stormers didn't "soar" to the top of the log, they clawed their way there. They're going to have to play for eighty minutes in their next outings. The way they have been playing the game appears to have taken it's toll and they appear to have some tired players there. However, I would love to see them win the trophy.

  • patrickjasoncawood - 2012-05-20 11:45

Soar..yeah the second half was pretty painful

  • Craven - 2012-05-20 15:20

Yoh, my mom and her Stormers friends got so drunk at our house last night. My poor dad who supports the bulls had to listen to them saying nasty things about Pierre Spies and Meisiekind. These Stormers people really are quite rude. My mom drank lots and lots of white wine and slept in the passage with her breasts hanging out. My poor dad, I hope for his sake that the bulls beat the stormers. Uncle Tokolos is very knowledgeable when it comes to rugby.

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-20 15:52

Craven.... Tokolos is the ONLY authority when it comes to rugby. Your dad is very right. Hope you follow in his footsteps!!!

      Craven - 2012-05-20 17:07

Yes I will uncle tokkie, my mom can be quite embarrassing at times, I think Tannie Saffa (who is rather rude herself) would fit in nicely with my mom and her loud drunken friends.

      Bossie - 2012-05-20 17:44

Ag Craven.. ek verstaan jy probeer funny wees, maar eintlik is jy maar net plat

  • Nicolaas - 2012-05-20 19:41

  • Enrico Capazorio - 2012-05-20 20:11

In all likelihood the Stormers will get an ugly win against the sharkies, the chiefs will be too strong for the bulls(although I hope the bulls can at least scrape a bonus point or two there). 3 sa teams in playoff positions, now doesn't that make for good reading.
