Fleck happy with Taute at 13

2012-03-22 22:25

Cape Town - The Stormers are happy that Jaco Taute is not part of the Lions' back trio, but instead at outside centre for their Super Rugby clash in Johannesburg on Saturday night.

Lions coach John Mitchell shifted regular fullback Taute to outside centre with Doppies la Grange moving to his inside. Taute’s place will be filled by James Kamana.

"We don't really have any outside centres left, so Jaco has clearly played a lot there," Mitchell told SAPA about his decision to shift the talented youngster.

Mitchell was forced to change his midfield combination after Alwyn Hollenbach was injured.

And Stormers backline coach Robbie Fleck believes the Lions could miss Taute's attacking exploits at the back.

"He is exceptionally good at fullback and I believe they'll miss him for his ability to launch counter attacks," Fleck told Die Burger.

"However, I have to add that he's been replaced by a fairly decent player in James Kamana."

Taute's strength, pace and ability to break the defensive line can nevertheless pose a big threat in midfield as well but the Stormers are confident that their sound defensive system will keep Taute at bay.

While the Lions will be missing Elton Jantjies at flyhalf, Fleck is wary of his replacement, Butch James - a former Springbok team-mate of Fleck.

"Butch is an old hand. People don't realise how intelligent a player he is. He will make good decisions at flyhalf and adds valuable experience," said Fleck.

The clash at Coca-Cola Park kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday.

Taute is no slouch at 13 and had some good games in that position. I would feel very uneasy if I was a papsak supporter. Most Lions players are not earning mega bucks however I do think they all play for their team and ultimately their future. Rugby is a team sport and any player worth his salt knows he needs his fellow team members if he wishes to excel. Blou Bul Groete!

      Rene - 2012-03-23 07:35

@Priester, I haven't seen Jaco at 13, I'm sure he can slot in anywhere in the back line. IMO, he is the best FB in SA at the moment - he is deserving of Green & Gold. Brilliant player!!

      Rene - 2012-03-23 07:38

@Isak, I see you had your "Jungle Jokes" this morning! JdV & De Jongh man handle Jaco & Doppies - that is real funny man - LMAO.

      Lion - 2012-03-23 07:46

      ISAK kots alweer hier

      paul.ramncwana - 2012-03-23 08:58

@Rene Taute is a good player going forward bt I don't think he will get enough opportunities to attack. If i was U pussy cat supporters I would worry how good is he is at defense. STORMERS!!!!!!!

      Rene - 2012-03-23 09:21

@Paul, I'm not a Lion supporter, but I can see talent (even in other provinces) - If I have to choose between JdV & Jaco Taute, my money will be on Jaco - for sure!

      Jed - 2012-03-23 09:34

I dont know about that Rene , De Villiers had a blinder against the Blue's. Allot of people call him slow but he still makes gaps and is a perfect foil for De Jongh.

      Mark - 2012-03-24 09:42

JDV is a great player and a true gentleman, unlike some of his provincial supporters, but so far as manhandling Doppies & Taute, NO CHANCE..... Go Bulls, Go Lioooooooooons.

      Paul - 2012-03-24 11:05

Pussy power to prevail at the Park. Lions by plenty!

  • Grant - 2012-03-23 02:50

Be careful Stormers....nothing more dangerous than a team with its back to the wall !

      Lion - 2012-03-23 07:48

Grant moet jou nie steur aan Balsak (Isak) nie. Hy soek geselskap

      hvanderlinde - 2012-03-23 08:11

On the other hand Grant, there might be nothing more dangerous than a juggenaut building momentum. I firmly believe the Stormers will not under estimate this Lions side, we cannot afford to. The CC semi's are still fresh

  • Nico - 2012-03-23 04:28

    GO LIONS!!!

      Lion - 2012-03-23 07:50

      ISAK... SHUT UP!!!

  • Lionel - 2012-03-23 07:20

I would not focus all my attention just on Taute, the rest of that Lion backline is just as dangerous....Gonna be a cracker.....Stormers by 8 points!!!!!!!!

      Jason - 2012-03-23 07:22

Stormers by more than that i think bro!

      Lionel - 2012-03-23 07:37

Jason, I will be happy with the win anything more will be a bonus:):) A bigger win margin will always make the Castles go down better....lol

      Lion - 2012-03-23 08:03

      ISAK... SHUT UP!!!

      hvanderlinde - 2012-03-23 08:13

Jason, I've got them by 16 on my bru. At first I thought it might be a bit optimistic but as soon as the Lions team was published, with all the reshuffling, and Kamana as the last line of defence it doesn't seem that at all

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 08:30

Morning folk. My worry: No out and out fetcher........against the Lions, it might be a problem. Lions pretty good on the deck, so our 3 loosies (who all have a fetching role it seems) will have to be baljagters of note this weekend..... I do have the Stormers to win by 17 on Bru......but that could have been my blind bias and not my head talking.....

      Lionel - 2012-03-23 08:34

Derrick Minnie is a class loosie, not to mention Cobus Grobelaar if he comes on!!!!

      Derrick - 2012-03-23 08:55

@Lionel- according to Isak , Minnie is an unknown- to all the genuine Stormers supporters given a bad name by a few- lets hope for a good game with no ref controversy- Stormers should take it but beware the wounded Lion

      Lionel - 2012-03-23 09:00

@Derrick,I am very weary of this Lions side injuries or no injuries!!!!Good luck for Saturday!!!

  • Sam - 2012-03-23 07:57

Somebody must tell Fleckie that Jaque Fourie started his Super Rugby career as a 19yr old fullback for the Lions. He was moved to outside centre due to injuries, and he later became the best in the world in that position. I'm not saying Taute is a 2nd Jaque Fourie, but nothing is impossible...

  • Ockie - 2012-03-23 08:03

I do hope that the Stormers and their supporters underestimate the Lions, like the Sharks last year. Remember Rugby is a team sport and the Stormers may have the big names, but the Lions play as a team and may just surprise them. Go Lions!

      hvanderlinde - 2012-03-23 08:14

And the Stormers don't play as a team?

      Lionel - 2012-03-23 08:20

Ockie, that Stormers team will not make the same mistake as last year, that I can guarantee you!!!Still going to be a good game though!!!

      Lion - 2012-03-23 08:28

Ockie... They came with their "Big Names" and big ego's last year as well remember. I say no more. It's arrogance like this here on this blog that make people hate the Stormers although they are a very very good team. The likes of Isak and WP & co unfortunately reflect a bad image in general about the Stormers supporters. And these few claim that the Bulls supporters are arrogant. To all the genuine and educated Stormers supporters out there who love the team to death.. All the best on Saturday. To Isak & co.... Piss Off!!!!

      hvanderlinde - 2012-03-23 08:39

Dankie, Lion.

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 08:28

Stem saam met jou. Die afwesigheid van 'n 'out en out' fetcher in ons span kan ons DUUR te staan kom teen die Leeus.

      Pomene - 2012-03-23 08:56

Net n jammerte dat Mango/Kulula en 1Time hulle kaartjies so gelaai het vir die skool vakansies anders was ek op Nuweland volgende saterdag - dit gaan n serious game wees !!!

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 10:07

@Pomene - ek sal 5 naartjies en een papsak namens jou op die veld gooi :)

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 16:47

@fake Saffa That will be a pretty average afternoon out for a Stormer at Newlands

  • Jody - 2012-03-23 08:36

    Go LIONS.

  • Johan - 2012-03-23 14:36

id be worried about grant at fly half and that other thing on the bench!! i dont know what to even call him??!?!?!?

      Saffa - 2012-03-23 16:48

      @Johan Useless?

  • Frans - 2012-03-23 22:06

Rene, i can't see under your hat but are you a blondy?

  • Frans - 2012-03-23 22:16

Johan nobody realy knows what you are referring to as a 'thing on the bench'? What the Stormers do have on the bench are extremely good substitudes as was proved last weekend.
