Stormers chase Riaan Viljoen

2011-06-09 09:20

Gerdie Karstens - Die Burger

Kimberley - This season could well be the last one in which Griquas' star fullback Riaan Viljoen runs out for the Cheetahs in Super Rugby.

Sport24 has reliably learnt that the Stormers have begun talks with Viljoen about the possibility of him making the move to Cape Town next year.

Viljoen is contracted to Griquas until the end of the year and should play for them in the Currie Cup, but it will be no surprise if he then bids farewell to the City of Diamonds.

During this year's Super Rugby with the Cheetahs, Viljoen has proven himself to be one of South Africa’s top fullbacks, something that may triple his value as a player.

Negotiations with players may only officially take place from July 1 onwards, but it is not stopping some of the bigger unions from already starting to entice players with money offers behind the scenes.

Griquas may even be prepared to let Viljoen leave before this year’s Currie Cup, as they were with Naas Olivier. Olivier will continue his career with Italian club Aironi.

But it's understandable Griquas won't wish to lose too many of their players ahead of the Currie Cup.

"I heard reports Riaan was approached by the Stormers, but I know nothing about any negotiations, Griquas CEO Arni van Rooyen said on Wednesday.

Van Rooyen did however confirm Olivier has been released to further his career in Italy.

EP Kings flyhalf Monty Dumond is on his way to Kimberley as a replacement for Olivier.

"He'll (Dumond) will join us as soon as possible," Van Rooyen confirmed.

Of late, Olivier has played second-fiddle to Sias Ebersohn at flyhalf at the Cheetahs, but last year played a pivotal role as Griquas captain in the Currie Cup.

Nice! Id rather have him in the setup than conrad jantjies

      Frikkie - 2011-06-09 10:29

      Maarten - 2011-06-09 19:20

No doubt that the Stormers would be a LOT stronger with Viljoen at 15 rather tha Jantjes.

  • MrMojoRising - 2011-06-09 09:30

Ag no man. I'm a Stormers fan, but also a huge Cheetahs supporter. Sick of the bigger unions that poach their players. That said, I'd rather have him play for the Stormers than the Sharks . . .

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-06-09 09:43

Mojo, he is a Griqua. Not a Cheetah.

  • GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 09:30

hahaha like i said the bulls, sharks and freestate make springboks the stromers seem to buy springboks lolololol

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-09 09:33

@Gillbert - please explain Bekker, Burger, de Villiers, Aplon, De Jongh? 1+1=9 if your name is Gilly the Willy.

      MrMojoRising - 2011-06-09 09:37

Hahaha, idiot. You do know that the Bulls poach more players than any other union right?

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 09:46

Gilly, i think you should just keep laughing , as everyone else thinks you stupid!!! hahahaha lolololo.Oh SAFFA where did Victor start his career off??(its me the real sparkster)

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 09:50

ok well name me more than 1 big sighning the bulls made the last 5 years except for bjorn and he wasnt even a bok then

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 09:57

saffa you just named 5 boks and there is 10 boks in the team.... whos the idiot now.... fourie, jantjies, habana, cj, januarie....... Mar lyk my die waarheid maak so biekie seer

      Hanjo - 2011-06-09 10:06

Jaco pretorius(big according to them, although he turned out to be pretty weak?) Stephan Dippenaar and Francois Hougaard were both lured up North young, but still. Gary Botha was lured back from Europe, Zane Kirchner from Griquas. Juandre Kruger lured back from Europe? Gillbert, you name the Sharks as a team who create Springboks? that surely is a joke? but the point you're missing is, what does it matter? really...think about it, the sport has reached professional era, and players moving from 1 club to another occurs commonly. even the Cheetahs signed some players before the start of Super15. your comments are always childish and without any substance...if you could prove that only the Stormers sign players, then I'll politely apologize....but until then please stop your false accusations and stick to a topic you have some knowledge on...somehow I think it may just take you a while to find one...so good luck..

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 10:10

Gilbert are you ok chap, you said the Bulls make their Boks and we buy them.SAFFA named you 5 boks that we made. You dumb nitwit. How many more do you want.Yes we have bought players, we have brains!

      Brannas - 2011-06-09 10:12

Bekker, Burger, de Villiers, Aplon, De Jongh = Quota players.

      Ryan - 2011-06-09 10:15

Gilbert, please get your facts straight. Please look where Morne Steyn, Francois Hougaart, Guthro Steenkamp, Bjorn Basson was born, and the sharks are the biggest poachers of them all.

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 10:23

hanjo jys seker n skool hoof of its want lykmy jy kan nie fun he of n joke vat nie...... ek moet se ek love dit hoe jy altyd persoonlik raak op die site jyt seker nie friende nie..... ons is nie jou friende nie

      Neutedop - 2011-06-09 10:28

Januarie and Jantjies played for Boland and WP u/21 - hardly poaching!

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 10:34

SAFFA, I give up, check Brannas chirp about quota players!!Ja Brannas, Hennie Bekker was also a quota player back in the day!!! LOL

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-09 10:38

@Sparkies - I seriously might have to consider taking Brannas up on his offer to have a drink in their "losie" at the stadium on Saturday. I actually HAVE to put a face to this intellectual retardation he exhibits here.

      Lou - 2011-06-09 10:49

@ Sparkies(the real one) Matfield comes from Polokwane(Pietersburg)

      Hanjo - 2011-06-09 10:59

Gillbert, you troll around here, and I have no problem with jokes, but you come to an article about the stormers, and jokingly? if you insist, insult their team, obviously just to get a reaction? you seem to be the only person who finds your "joke" funny, I just find it childish... that's my opinion, and please don't flatter yourself, I have no idea who "we" refer to, but I have no intention of being friends...if you misinterpreted my reply to you as a gesture to friendship...there's no hope... you go on making your silly jokes, I'll appreciate intelligent humor. you asked some silly questions below which you deemed unanswerable, and I answered, your lack of a response regarding the topic at hand obviously forced you to get personal...so practice what you preach...funny seeing me as a "skool hoof" probably because that's the only form of authority you've ever faced, probably still stuck in primary school...

      Marx - 2011-06-09 11:08

Hanjo, the only player you mentioned that was a Bok is Pretorius, so what's your point?? Dippenaar was bought from the Cape as well as Hougie, were they even known then?? Gary played for the Bulls as well as Kruger, so again, what's your point?? Kirshner, was he a Bok when he came to the Bulls, no, he wasn't. We make Stars of talented players. That my friend, is a fact.

      mysticBoer - 2011-06-09 11:16

@Gillbert Well Riaan Viljoen isn't a bok now either?

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 11:24

he is a bok r he got hes first cap against italy 2009.....

      Hanjo - 2011-06-09 11:27

Marx, Gary and Kruger despite their previous stints at the club were still bought?? and the Stormers bought Bryan and Fourie last year?? so we bought two players who were already established against the 1 I mentioned from the Bulls, add Bjorn and you have to acknowledge that both teams buy players who are already established, whether previously capped at national level or not, if they struggle with depth , or have little experienced options in a certain position...it's no sin to buy a player...in most, (all) cases, the player actually agrees to the move..

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 11:33

Hanjo are you drunk!!!!!!..... you dislike my comments yet you always reply to them and write a story book of how childish and dumb and racist i am......."obviously just to get a reaction?" then i obviously get a reaction from you every time, every time LOL you must be extremely gullible and restarted

      Krugga - 2011-06-09 11:37

What!? I just read an article this morning about how the WP Institute of Rugby doesn't want to contract players outside the union anymore. What do you call this then? First they talk about WP's youngsters as being the golden age (like Haley's Comet, it only happens once every 76 years), then they buy players for key positions from other unions. Some golden age they have... Not to mention how they let Hougie slip through their fingers, well managed my gat.

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 11:43

Krugga, why is WP Rugby the wealthiest union in the country, maybe becuase its well managed. You cant eve manage your own gat

      Marx - 2011-06-09 11:43

But at the end of the day, the loyalty to the Bulls Union by their players are incredible. Look at the amount of Caps. Wynand was offered millions by the Stormers, he didn't take it. money isn't everything you know...... okay, exept for Habana, cause when Wynand said no, he and daddy moved in like nothing you've seen before. Rugby is proffesional, buying is part of the new era, period.

      GILLBERT - 2011-06-09 11:51

Well said Marx...... the loyalty of players is measured by the wallets in their pockets, but thats prof sport at the end of the day

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 12:00

Marx...commitment?? I call it keeping it in the family!

      Jannie - 2011-06-09 13:53

@Marx. Where do you get yours facts boytjie? Or are you pulling them from your arse?

      Marx - 2011-06-09 14:09

Ou Jannie, why don't you add something worth while.......please brighten our day with your superior knowledge....waiting.......or are your head to far up your arse??

  • sonnyg - 2011-06-09 09:32

This guy is so talented, he has been stuffed around by the Cheetahs Management, the only reason he got a starting spot this year was because daniller got injured and he got to show how good he really is.

      !!Vrystaat!! - 2011-06-09 10:34

Last year he was started but got kicked for drinking and staying out to late against team rules before games. But he shaked that off now and that is more the reason why he is being used that just the injury to Daniller.

  • Neo - 2011-06-09 09:41

While you in that neck of the woods ... make Sarel Pretorius an offer as well. Ricky January was good but getting too slow now?

      Kok - 2011-06-09 10:02

Agree. Ricky should realise that the end is at hand and he should take any offer coming from Europe.

      Frikkie - 2011-06-09 11:43

  • gooinat - 2011-06-09 09:45

Not a bad option at all, will mean the end of the road for Jantjies.

  • Staalbal - 2011-06-09 09:51

Excellent Buy. This guy is the form FB in SA. Lets hope he decides to come to CT.

      Hanjo - 2011-06-09 10:10

      form fullback after Taute surely?

  • Lloyd - 2011-06-09 09:53

Don't even consider Riaan, you are not a hasbeen yet.

      Kok - 2011-06-09 09:59

      Stormers should try Stephan Terblanche.

      Lloyd - 2011-06-09 10:04

Kok even Stefan is nie so n groot hasbeen nie.

      sparkies - 2011-06-09 10:10

      Lloyd should try Kok

      gooinat - 2011-06-09 10:14

@Sparky,Lloyd did try Kok,they made Alwyn!!!!!!!!!!

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-09 10:18

      @Gooinat - ROTFLMAO

      Raka13 - 2011-06-09 10:19

One thing is for sure - once a Bulls player always a Bulls player - programmed to play their game, not tought to adapt to other playing patterns - if a player leaves the Bulls, his career is over- His rugby CV will only show experience in one type of rugby pattern.

      Frikkie - 2011-06-09 11:45

  • Raka13 - 2011-06-09 10:13

If we buy him, why did we let go of Joe Pieterson? We have Aplon to wear nr15, Sadie can wear Nr14. Nothing against Riaan, he is very good and welcome.

      Oukoos - 2011-06-09 16:27

Joe Pietersen in an interview with Sport24 before he left for France: “I have to be realistic about my chance of playing for the Springboks. While I back myself, I’m not better than the guys they are currently picking. You can’t take anything away from Frans Steyn and Zane Kirchner is also playing very well. I am spoken of as a potential Springbok, but I’m not as close to it as many people seem to think.” Joe asked to be released from his contract and the WP complied

  • StBad - 2011-06-09 10:23

I feel sorry for the Griquas/Cheetahs/Griffons... they've built a fantastic core of players who are now slowly leaking through the system. Free State truly is a breeding ground for SA's Rugga talent!

      Mongril - 2011-06-10 15:33

No, they just buy them younger than other unions do. The Grey Bloem 1st 15 do not comprise 15 born and bred freestaters by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Dirk - 2011-06-09 10:36

Dit sal n goeie koop wees

  • CamelJoe - 2011-06-09 10:40

  • JJRR - 2011-06-09 10:57

Hy is 'n Griekwa, nie 'n cheetah nie

      CamelJoe - 2011-06-09 12:36

Maak nie saak of hy 'n griffon griekwa of cheetah is nie.

  • Weezychest - 2011-06-09 12:27

The Blue Bulls are renowned for poaching there cheerleaders. Ive driven around Pretoria and couldnt find any hot chicks, blady poachers.

      Frikkie - 2011-06-09 14:20

  • Whoosa - 2011-06-09 14:36

I am baffled, once again. The stormers have the best fullback in SA (Aplon) but they play him at wing. Now they go and buy this guy. Why not kick Jantjes, play Aplon at 15 and poolman engelbrecht or sadie at 14? Aplon at wing is such a waist because he hardly gets any ball. Everytime he touches the ball he he lookes dangerous. He is the only player in sa that can counter attack, ok to be fair Taute also shows a little bit of promise. Aplon's got a well educated boot and his defence is solid. O ja but i forgot, if Aplon plays fullback there no place in the bok team for Pdivvys love child InsaneZane Kurchner! Anyway, Viljoen is a good player and deserves a run at a decent franchise, i just feel for the cheetahs!

      Oukoos - 2011-06-09 16:34

I agree 100% on Aplon. I rate him even higher than Frans Steyn

  • gnus wakker - 2011-06-09 15:14

Nothing new. 75% of the WP/Stormers team are from other provinces

  • gnus wakker - 2011-06-09 15:30

But then again, ek dink Duane het 'n negatiewe IK, so hy sal seker maak die span IK is rondom nul anyway

      Whoosa - 2011-06-09 16:13

Jy is regtig n idioot, gepraat van n lae IK. Ek dink jyt het n IG, inteligensie GEBREK. Comment on whats relevent you fool and stop being a bumhole!

      Ketotter - 2011-06-09 16:30

      @Whoosa Just stating the facts

      Lloyd - 2011-06-09 17:13

Ketotter ek smaak jou stukkend my ou.
